Book excerpt: Excerpt from The First Greek Book The first greek book is an attempt to make, Within proper limits, a book which shall appeal to both teacher and pupil, from its logical sequence of subjects, from its directness of statement, and its conciseness and freedom from unnecessary details which hamper and confuse the learner. We have intentionally departed from the beaten path in several important particulars. The second aorist, a tense constantly used, is introduced early in the book. Contract nouns and adjectives, always a stumbling-block, are postponed to a more natural position than is usually given them. The dual has been removed to its proper place, the appendix. For the purpose of increased interest and freshness, as well as to introduce the learner early to practice in the translation of a continuous text, dialogues, fables, and reading exercises are given as early as possible and continued through the book. It has seemed to us more sensible to begin the study of forms with the verb, followed by the O-declension of nouns, as pupils find it easier to learn adjectives in the order of their declension, than to learn first the feminine, and later the masculine and neuter. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this elementary textbook, Philip S. Peek draws on his twenty-five years of teaching experience to present the ancient Greek language in an imaginative and accessible way that promotes creativity, deep learning, and diversity. The course is built on three pillars: memory, analysis, and logic. Readers memorize the top 250 most frequently occurring ancient Greek words, the essential word endings, the eight parts of speech, and the grammatical concepts they will most frequently encounter when reading authentic ancient texts. Analysis and logic exercises enable the translation and parsing of genuine ancient Greek sentences, with compelling reading selections in English and in Greek offering starting points for contemplation, debate, and reflection. A series of embedded Learning Tips help teachers and students to think in practical and imaginative ways about how they learn. This combination of memory-based learning and concept- and skill-based learning gradually builds the confidence of the reader, teaching them how to learn by guiding them from a familiarity with the basics to proficiency in reading this beautiful language. Ancient Greek I: A 21st-Century Approach is written for high-school and university students, but is an instructive and rewarding text for anyone who wishes to learn ancient Greek.

He has not spared labor on his part, nor have the Publishers expense on their's, to render the various volumes of the series even still more worthy of the confidence and support of the public; and he ventures to express the Opinion that the present First Greek Book will be found to be admirably adapted to the ground ing of the young student in the fundamea principles of the noble language of Greece, as well as a very considerable improvement on former editions of the same book. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Greek Book: On the Plan of the First Latin Book It may not be deemed amiss here to say, that the educa tional works of Mr. Arnold require activity and energy on the part of the teacher as well as the scholar. They are not meant to supersede the necessity of a competent and faithful instructor, who can take occasion to enlarge upon, render more full (as boys now and then need), and impress upon his classes, the admirably arranged and clearly and logically drawn out course of instruction contained in these volumes. On the contrary, the teacher must be active and hard-work ing as well as his boys: if he be so, it is really surprising how rapid and yet how solid is their progress if he be not, this as well as every other good school-book will be of com paratively little servme In carrying forward the student to ward the goal of his wishes and his efforts. It ought not to be necessary, in these days, to remind any one that there is no royal road to learning, and that the best of books and best of systems will not make thorough scholars, without good teachers, and studious, hard-working pupils. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Beginners Greek Book The study of Greek was introduced into western Europe at the time of the Renaissance by Greeks who of course employed the pronunciation then in vogue in their own country. From that time to the present the claim has repeatedly been made that we should read ancient Greek literature by giving to the letters the value which they have in Modern Greek. That the modern pronunciation differs exceedingly from the ancient is a fact capable of the clearest historical demonstration, and as early as 1528 the great scholar Erasmus maintained that it was necessary to deter mine historically what the ancient pronunciation was, and to be guided in our practice by the results of such investigation. Of the correctness of this principle there is now no serious question. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A First Book in Greek This book is an attempt to meet the growing demand of teachers for a preparatory book which shall be at the same time systematic, brief, and thorough. It is complete in itself and does not require the use of a grammar. The forms of inflection and the usages of syntax have been stated first, and then illustrated. This system we believe to be clearer, and to give better results, than any inductive method, which may at first seem interesting, but soon becomes burdensome and confusing. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Beginner's Greek Book I have not hesitated to analyze the forms of the verb, since I believe that this is the quickest and surest way in which to learn them. It is a severe strain upon the memory of the eye and ear to attempt to retain these numerous forms as separate and individual elements. But if the pupil is given a clear conception of the significance of theme, tense stem, and per sonal endings, the strain is greatly relieved. He is then able to construct his paradigms by the combination of a relatively small number of facts, and is not dependent solely on his memory in recalling forms, but reclaims them by a logical process of form-building. This very process fixes them more securely in his mind. I have for the same reasons analyzed the forms of nouns of the consonant declension. The recogni tion here of stem and case endings as distinct elements in combination makes the acquisition of the forms easy. Since the exercises of the lessons consist of sentences and not of phrases, in developing the forms I have had to deal also with laws of construction. Principles of syntax are presented inductively as needed. Examples are given and the general law is developed from particular instances of its use.1 But the subject of Syntax is not made prominent in the first one hundred lessons. Principles which hold good also in Latin or English or in both are taken for granted, being at most referred to in a foot-note. Moreover, single occurrences of constructions not in themselves difficult are explained by a mere statement of the fact in a foot-note. Difficult constructions have been avoided in selecting the sentences for these exercises, and with the same object in view the sentences have often been simplified. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Greek Prose Composition Part I contains, in graded lessons, the principal points of Greek syntax, the unusual and non-essential being purposely omitted. These lessons are designed for use at the beginning of the second year's study of Greek, thereby serving as a partial review of the first year's work and as an introduction to the composition work in connection with the reading of Xenophon's Anabasis. Part II contains short, simple English sentences, based on Books I - IV of the Anabasis. These should be used daily in connection with the reading of the text. Part III contains connected English prose, based on Books I - IV of the Anabasis. This is carefully graded, so that the stu dent who performs faithfully the work outlined here will be able to pass the entrance examination of any of the American colleges. The method of writing Greek at sight used in this book needs a word of explanation. It is the outgrowth of the author's personal experience in the classroom, and his belief that the best results can be obtained only by systematic practice in connection with the regular work. The aim of the new series is to bring into the fore ground the great main lines of Greek accidence and syntax, in short to teach the regular and ordinary modes of expres sion in use at the time when the most precise of languages had reached its highest precision. Accordingly it was necos sary carefully to revise the Grammar if it was to take its proper place in the series.
