Book excerpt: How much was archaeology founded on prejudice? The Archaeology of Race explores the application of racial theory to interpret the past in Britain during the late Victorian and Edwardian period. It investigates how material culture from ancient Egypt and Greece was used to validate the construction of racial hierarchies. Specifically focusing on Francis Galton's ideas around inheritance and race, it explores how the Egyptologist Flinders Petrie applied these in his work in Egypt and in his political beliefs. It examines the professional networks formed by societies, such as the Anthropological Institute, and their widespread use of eugenic ideas in analysing society. Archaeology of Race draws on archives and objects from the Petrie Museum of Egyptian Archaeology and the Galton collection at UCL. These collections are used to explore anti-Semitism, skull collecting, New Race theory and physiognomy. These collections give insight into the relationship between Galton and Petrie and place their ideas in historical context.

Book excerpt: A winged centaur with the spotted body of a leopard playing a lute; a naked man with an animal head; a goat-footed Pan; a four-bodied lion; sphinxes, and hippocamps. Few would associate these forms of art with the Byzantine era, a period dominated by religious art. However, an art of strikingly secular expression was not only common to Byzantine culture, but also key to defining it. In Other Icons, Eunice Dauterman Maguire and Henry Maguire offer the first comprehensive view of this "unofficial" Byzantine art, demonstrating the role it played and its dialogue with traditional Christian Byzantine art. This beautifully illustrated book creates an entirely new understanding of the whole of Byzantine art and culture. With its wide-ranging examples, the book vividly demonstrates how the surprise of this "profane" art is not only in its subjects of mythic creatures, exotic imagery, and eroticism, but also in the ubiquity and beauty of their placement--within churches and without, woven into silk, illuminated on manuscripts, engraved into pottery, painted in frescoes, and taking life in marble, bone, and ivory. By presenting and exploring this profane art for the first time in a scholarly book in English, Other Icons will change the way we look at the art of an entire era.

Book excerpt: When Matisse thus expressed his admiration for icons, upon a visit to Russia in 1911, he echoed the sentiments of viewers down the centuries. These painted panels made for Byzantine and Orthodox churches and as aids to prayers at home are perhaps the most effective and enduring form of religious art ever developed, and also perhaps one of the most mysterious. The peaceful, clear imagery found within them can be appreciated on both a religious and a secular level. This engaging book looks at icons in the context of the history of Christianity, examining all aspects of the production and power of this distinctive art form. Through numerous colour illustrations, it investigates their subject matter, showing how scenes can be identified, how the iconography developed over the centuries, and the role of portraiture. The ways in which icons were made, framed and displayed are also explored, based on an analysis of examples from the British Museum that have been carefully studied by restorers. The Museum's entire collection of around 100 icons, unmatched in Britain, is illustrated here in colour.

Book excerpt: The Origins of El Greco focuses on the evolution of the multifaceted relationship of Cretan painters with Western art during this rich period. The Origins of El Greco presents an extraordinary group of 15th and 16th century paintings, including works by El Greco. The color-illustrated catalogue features detailed descriptions of all 46 masterpieces included in the exhibition, some of them published for the first time, as well as 3 informative essays: Anastasia Drandaki, Curator, Byzantine Collection, Benaki Museum, Athens writes on "Between Byzantium and Venice: Icon Painting in Venetian Crete in the Fifteenth and Sixteenth Centuries", Olga Gratziou, Professor of Byzantine Art and Archaeology, University of Crete writes on "Cretan Architecture and Sculpture in the Venetian Period" and Nicos Hadjinicolaou, Professor Emeritus in Art History, University of Crete, and Honorary Fellow of the Institute for Mediterranean Studies, writes on "Early and Late El Greco".

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: - A sumptuous celebration of photographer Andy Gott's unique portrait style, charting his 30-year career- With a foreword by Stephen Fry. Contributions from Kate Winslet and John Hurt. Appreciations by David Gandy, Brian May, Michael Palin, Ringo Starr, Dick van Dyck, Vivienne Westwood"His forté is the absolutely direct black and white portrait, full-on, sometimes grainy and remorseless in the detailing of complexion, sometimes mischievously witty and unexpected, always completely unforgettable." - Stephen Fry "Andy Gotts is a genius of his craft" - Tom Hanks In 1990 Andy Gotts, then a young photography student at Norfolk College of Arts and Technology, approached Stephen Fry at an event to ask him for a portrait. That brief meeting led to an even briefer photographic session (90 seconds), during which Andy realised he had discovered his photographic approach: "I cannot remember what I said to provoke the expressions and reactions I had in these 10 frames, but that was it... BOOM! ... my eureka moment. It was like a huge weight was lifted from my shoulders and I knew celebrity portraits were the way for me." Some 30 years later, Andy's unique portrait style - rapidly taken and often face-on - is admired for capturing the charisma of famed sitters such as Kylie Minogue, Meryl Streep, Harrison Ford and Kirk Douglas. Andy's chatty, quick-fire approach led Paul Newman to nickname him 'One Shot Gotts'. The photographs that Andy creates are naturalistic, eschewing the seductive technological traps of airbrushing and heavy styling. Andy Gotts was awarded an MBE in 2012 for his contribution to photography. This book is published in association with Maddox Gallery, London.
