Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The First 100 Years tells the story from 1907 to 2007 of the First Baptist Church of Passtown and the African American Community of Hayti in Coatesville, Pennsylvania. The church members and residents tell their stories in words and pictures during the milestone 100th Anniversary of the First Baptist Church of Passtown in 2007. There are many historical Hayti communities throughout the United States. In this Hayti community, families migrating from the South found an oasis and have been neighbors and friends for over 100 years. Whether researching segregated schools in a northern state; or family members who migrated from the South to work in a steel town; or history contained in the books written by Hayti residents; you may find the answer inside, on the pages of this book. The surprise connections fell from the sky. What began as a small, local history of our church and community has yielded so much more historical texture. The years tell us much that the days never knew - Ralph Waldo Emerson Welcome to Hayti and the First Baptist Church of Passtown!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a history of a community, and, moreover, a history by that community. In January, 2007, Jeannine Turgeon began to recruit a committee of Bellevue Park neighbors, volunteers who would be willing to produce a book about their neighborhood in honor of its 100th anniversary. Initial members were Clark and Vickie Bucher, Dan Deibler and Elizabeth Johnson, Chris Dick, Frank Haas, Hannah Leavitt, Carol Lopus, Mo Lynn, Bonnie Mark, Debbie Nifong, Peggy and Dan Purdy, John Quimby, Sue Ellen Ramer, Olivia Susskind, Doris Ulsh, Phil and Mary Walsh, Mary Warner, and Gretchen Yarnall. Prof. Michael Barton of Penn State Harrisburg was invited to serve as a consultant and general editor for the project, and we selected Xlibris as our publisher. In these early months, outlines were organized and re-organized, topics were proposed and discarded, and suggestions of all sorts were submitted and accepted or reluctantly retracted to fit within the publisher’s limits and the book’s budget.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first major history of Imperial College London. The book tells the story of a new type of institution that came into being in 1907 with the federation of three older colleges. Imperial College was founded by the state for advanced university-level training in science and technology, and for the promotion of research in support of industry throughout the British Empire. True to its name the college built a wide number of Imperial links and was an outward looking institution from the start. Today, in the post-colonial world, it retains its outward-looking stance, both in its many international research connections, and with staff and students from around the world. Connections to industry and the state remain important. The College is one of Britain's premier research and teaching institutions, including now medicine alongside science and engineering. This book is an in-depth study of Imperial College; it covers both governance and academic activity within the larger context of political, economic and socio-cultural life in twentieth-century Britain.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While New Jersey now frequently appears near the top in listings of America’s healthiest states, this has not always been the case. The fluctuations in the state’s overall levels of health have less to do with the lifestyle choices of individual residents and more to do with broader structural issues, ranging from pollution to urban design to the consolidation of the health care industry. This book uses the past fifty years of New Jersey history as a case study to illustrate just how much public policy decisions and other upstream factors can affect the health of a state’s citizens. It reveals how economic and racial disparities in health care were exacerbated by bad policies regarding everything from zoning to education to environmental regulation. The study further chronicles how New Jersey struggled to deal with public health crises like the AIDS epidemic and the crack epidemic. Yet it also explores how the state has developed some of the nation’s most innovative responses to public health challenges, and then provides policy suggestions for how we might build an even healthier New Jersey.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 2007 and out of print since 2012, this volume was the first complete history of L. E. Smith, made possible by unprecedented access to factory records, catalogs, photographs, and the company "morgue" - thousands of sample pieces from 100 years of production. It is now available from the Glass Flakes Press, scanned from the original work with minor updates and corrections. In addition to the extensive history, it includes sections identifying all production and many experimental colors, including carnival glass, milk glass, and other opaque colors. Approximately one third of the book is devoted to the major patterns, including Mount Pleasant, Heritage (including many reproductions from the McKee -Tec patterns), Dominion, Simplicity (Smith's answer to Viking's Epic), Moon and Star, Hobnail, Daisy and Button, and many more. The remainder of the book covers specialized products: ruby-stained souvenir ware, candy containers, bedroom and bathroom glassware, animals and covered animals dishes, candlesticks, and punch bowls. A general index, pattern number index, and visual index are included.
