Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jerome Rothenberg’s final anthology—an experiment in omnipoetics with Javier Taboada—reaches into the deepest origins of the Americas, north and south, to redefine America and its poetries The Serpent and the Fire breaks out of deeply entrenched models that limit “American” literature to work written in English within the present boundaries of the United States. Editors Jerome Rothenberg and Javier Taboada gather vital pieces from all parts of the Western Hemisphere and the breadth of European and Indigenous languages within: a unique range of cultures and languages going back several millennia, an experiment in what the editors call an American “omnipoetics.” The Serpent and the Fire is divided into four chronological sections—from early pre-Columbian times to the immediately contemporary—and five thematic sections that move freely across languages and shifting geographical boundaries to underscore the complexities, conflicts, contradictions, and continuities of the poetry of the Americas. The book also boasts contextualizing commentaries to connect the poets and poems in dialogue across time and space.

Our consistent spiritual growth comes from praying, reading, studying and applying Bible doctrine in our daily living. Bible doctrine creates capacity for life, for love, for Christian service, for blessing, for happiness. God has devised the design of the ages, the perfect plan for each one of us personally. All you and I have to do is understand His gracious offer and seize the incomparable opportunity for a life of meaning, purpose, and definition. This book will help to show you how to uncover the Plan of God which reveals Gods provision for your salvation, His purpose for your existence after salvation, and the treasures He has waiting for your eternal future on earth and in heaven. The moment you believe in Christ you immediately share His life and destiny. But for us to attain the wonderful peace, happiness, and contentment God has planned for our lives on earth, we must learn Bible doctrine and grow to spiritual maturity. The Bible communicates Gods Word to you and I so absolute truth becomes the measure of our conscience, and the motivation of our life. Blessed is the man Who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, Nor stands in the path of sinners, Nor sits in the seat of the scornful; But his delight is in the law of the LORD, And in His law he meditates day and night. He shall be like a tree Planted by the rivers of water, That brings forth its fruit in its season, Whose leaf also shall not wither; And whatever he does shall prosper. [PSA 1:1-3] The young and ever-growing Christian will face many challenges in their lives but we must remember: Now thanks be to God who always leads us in triumph in Christ, and through us diffuses the fragrance of His knowledge in every place.[ 2CO 2:14] "Thus says the LORD who made it, the LORD who formed it to establish it (the LORD is His name): Call to Me, and I will answer you, and show you great and mighty things, which you do not know.'

Book excerpt: In the myth and folklore of ancient European cultures and spiritual traditions, the longest night of the year, called Winter Solstice, was a time of transition during which people sought out personal renewal and rebirth. The Fires of Yule provides a template and a pattern for entering deeply into the Winter Solstice Season, experiencing it in poetic and transformative ways through a contemporary calendar called The Thirteen Dayes of Yule. Readers of The Fires of Yule will follow a pilgrim path of the Thirteen Dayes from 13 to 25 December, engaging in various myths, symbols, stories, and rituals associated with each day. Becoming practitioners of the Yule, deepening their experience of the Winter Solstice, they will move beyond the more banal and commercialized forms of the December holidays. The calendar of the Thirteen Dayes is sourced (historically) in Celtic myth and Paganism, as well as (imaginatively) in the lore of the Elves of ancient pre-Celtic worlds. This book brings together many of the best-known icons and customs of modern Christmas traditions, re-sourcing them in the light of a Pagan Hearth and offering touchstones for self-renewal at Winter Solstice. This revised edition of The Fires of Yule presents the mystic pattern of Thirteen Dayes in its fullest expression, narrated in the voice of a fictional character, Cornelius Whitsel, a student of religion and a Pagan spiritual director in the Keltelven Traditions who lives in the imagined landscape of Ross County, Pennsylvania. Cornelius has been a character in two of Montague Whitsels other books; Ham Farir: The Faring of Matthew Thorin Dier (2008) and Tales from the Seasons (2009). The Fires of Yule is the culmination of more than three decades of the authors devout engagement with the Yule and deep reflection on the nature of the Winter Solstice. Montague Whitsel has explored, studied and practiced Western spiritualities grounded in the Celtic, Neo-Pagan and Monastic traditions for more than 40 years.

Filled with true, exciting, quirky, nostalgic, and often extraordinary stories, this book is a reminder to us all from author Tom Barrett that “we should not sleepwalk through life.” Originally written for a blog, this collection follows the author’s experiences as he hitchhiked across North America in the 1970s, covered national and international stories as a reporter for the Edmonton Journal, and trekked across dozens of countries, including Uganda, Bhutan, India, Peru, Malawi, Italy, and Nepal. Told with humour and humility, Barrett shares stories about meeting stoned fellow hippies and Deadheads, Hell’s Angels, gay female strippers, a horny truck driver, and even Muammar Ghaddafi. A mix of intriguing glimpses of other cultures and locales, some 1970s and 1980s nostalgia, interesting behind-the-story insights from a well-travelled news reporter, and some personal escapades, A Backpacker’s Journey celebrates the uniqueness of the many people, places, and circumstances that weave together our own personal stories.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In July 1978, Wilbert Williams Jr. was standing on a street corner in Brooklyn, New York, afraid for his life. It had been less than three months since he was awarded a medical degree from Albany Medical College in upstate New York; yet there he was-enduring racial slurs from a group of angry white people who hated him simply because of the color of his skin. Even as the police stood guarding him, the group continued to taunt him with the words, "He can go back where he came from." In his poignant memoir, Williams narrates the story of how he beat overwhelming odds, as an African American youth growing up in a public housing project in Brooklyn, New York, to eventually become a physician. While chronicling a journey that took him from the streets of New York through the challenges of medical school to the beautiful Caribbean island of St. Croix, he details how he learned to prevail over racism, anxiety, and depression in order to achieve his dream of becoming a doctor. Dr. Williams's inspiring story offers motivation to soar over the challenges of life and reach for the stars.

This book was released on 2011-11-01 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most recent books about Chiapas, Mexico, focus on political conflicts and the indigenous movement for human rights at the macro level. None has explored those conflicts and struggles in-depth through an individual woman's life story. The Journey of a Tzotzil-Maya Woman of Chiapas, Mexico now offers that perspective in one woman's own words. Anthropologist Christine Eber met "Antonia" in 1986 and has followed her life's journey ever since. In this book, they recount Antonia's life story and also reflect on challenges and rewards they have experienced in working together, offering insight into the role of friendship in anthropological research, as well as into the transnational movement of solidarity with the indigenous people of Chiapas that began with the Zapatista uprising. Antonia was born in 1962 in San Pedro Chenalhó, a Tzotzil-Maya township in highland Chiapas. Her story begins with memories of childhood and progresses to young adulthood, when Antonia began working with women in her community to form weaving cooperatives while also becoming involved in the Word of God, the progressive Catholic movement known elsewhere as Liberation Theology. In 1994, as a wife and mother of six children, she joined a support base for the Zapatista Army of National Liberation. Recounting her experiences in these three interwoven movements, Antonia offers a vivid and nuanced picture of working for social justice while trying to remain true to her people's traditions.
