Determined to keep the struggling museum open, she plans to impress Barton Farm's wealthy benefactress, Cynthia Cherry, with a Civil War reenactment on the farm's grounds. Unfortunately, the first shot in the battle isn't from a period soldier. It's from Cynthia's greedy nephew, Maxwell, who fires a threat at Kelsey to cut the museum's funding. The next morning, things go from bad to worse when Kelsey discovers Maxwell dead. Now Kelsey is the number one suspect, and she must start her own investigation to save Barton Farm...and herself. Praise: "History and Civil War buffs will enjoy the historical details woven through the mystery, and Kelsey and the secondary characters are well drawn and sympathetic. This one will appeal to readers who enjoy contemporary cozies with a history frame."—Booklist "Very well written...with great characterization, history, plot, and humor galore. A definite 5-star."—Suspense Magazine "Flower combines a plethora of suspects, a soupçon of history, and a dash of romance."—Kirkus Reviews "Flower peppers [The Final Reveille] with enough historical detail and snarky one-liners to make readers intrigued to see what she'll do next."—Library Journal "A thoroughly enjoyable mystery with history, humor, and heart!"—Krista Davis, New York Times bestselling author of The Domestic Diva Mystery Series "A spunky heroine in a fast-paced mystery...what a fun book to read!"—Mary Ellis, author of The Civil War Heroines Series

Book excerpt: In 1916, Mexican bandit Pancho Villa raided the southwestern border town of Columbus. Three hundred American soldiers fought four hundred attackers in a battle that ended with one of the last cavalry charges in U.S. history. Outraged, Congress ordered the U.S. Army to invade Mexico in pursuit of Villa. For the first time, trucks and airplanes accompanied U. S. cavalry into combat, practicing for America’s entry into World War I. Influenced by Sam Peckinpah, Rambo-creator David Morrell dramatizes this epic era in American history through the eyes of a civilian scout old enough to have been in the Civil War, the Indian wars, Cuba, and the Philippines. Knowing that his ways are finished, he teaches a young recruit about the past, at a cost he never expected to pay. For this special 35th anniversary e-book edition, the author revised the original text. "David Morrell’s LAST REVEILLE is back in a newly revised—even better—version than when it first appeared in 1977. Featuring two of Morrell’s greatest characters, the green kid Prentice and the John Wayne-like Miles Calendar, LAST REVEILLE is an exciting, well-researched account of ‘Black Jack’ Pershing’s 1916 expedition after Pancho Villa. It’s a cinematic, end-of-the-west epic, but also a gripping, moving character study told by a true master.” —Johnny D. Boggs, four-time Spur Award winning author of NORTHFIELD, former president of Western Writers of America “Seldom has action been so breathlessly described . . . Rousing and moving . . . an exciting novel in hard, crackling prose.” —Houston Chronicle “The action has a glory about it.” —Kirkus

Book excerpt: Kelsey Taps for Something Much Deadlier Than Sap March on Barton Farm can only mean one thing: maple sugar season. To combat the winter slump, resilient director Kelsey Cambridge organizes a Maple Sugar Festival, complete with school visits, pancake breakfasts, and a tree-tapping class. She hires curmudgeonly maple sugar expert Dr. Conrad Beeson to teach the workshop, despite misgivings over his unpleasant demeanor. It's a decision Kelsey ends up regretting when, before the first tree can be tapped for sap, Dr. Beeson turns up dead. His death threatens to shut down not only the festival, but also Barton Farm itself. Kelsey has no choice but to tap for the truth and solve the murder to escape an increasingly sticky situation. Praise: "[Flower's] a prolific, and facile, author...In addition to interesting characters and a seamless plot, there's plenty of fascinating lore about the whole process of converting sugar-maple sap into the syrup that is so highly valued."—Alfred Hitchcock Mystery Magazine "A very entertaining murder mystery."—Suspense Magazine "As series protagonists go, Kelsey's role as the director of a niche nonprofit in northern Ohio is certainly unusual, but Flower makes it appealing by focusing on a close-knit community of people who care about their work and each other."—Booklist

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This illustrated account of one of British history's great national events is the first ever published having as its sole subject the state and private funeral of Sir Winston Churchill. Significantly, 2015 marks the 50th anniversary of Churchill's death and it is 120 years since the death of Churchill's father, Lord Randolph, who died on 24 January 1895. The year 2015 is also the 70th anniversary of the end of World War Two, in which Churchill played such a pivotal and dynamic role. The book covers all aspects of Operation Hope Not - the codename for the arrangements for Churchill's state funeral - the details of which only made available to the public in 1996 under the 30-year official secrets rule. The author was given access to archive papers at Arundel Castle; the Churchill Archives Centre at Churchill College, Cambridge; the National Archives at Kew; and the College of Arms in London. In 2013 he interviewed The 11th Duke of Marlborough - who, as the Marquis of Blandford, greeted and then accompanied the mourners after the service at St. Paul's Cathedral; on the funeral train to Hanborough; then on to St. Martin's Church, Bladon, where Churchill's burial took place. The author also interviewed in 2013 the Countess of Avon, Churchill's niece, who attended the funeral, and Mrs. Minnie Churchill, who attended Churchill's Lying-in-State and is the mother of Churchill's living heir, Randolph Churchill - Winston Churchill's great-grandson.'Churchill's Final Farewell' also explains aspects of state and ceremonial funerals, together with details of that of Churchill; the reasons for Waterloo Station, not Paddington, being chosen as the departure point to Bladon, where Churchill lies, and the story of his interment there. There are also particulars of some rather special champagne served on the funeral train with a personal message from Winston - stories that the 16th Duke of Norfolk, The Earl Marshall of England (responsible for all the arrangements for Operation Hope Not) told his close friend, the great English bowler Alec Bedser.

Ambitious wedding planner Vianna Pine is determined to make the bride's Civil War-themed wedding perfect. But each time Vianna's vision threatens the integrity and safety of the Farm, Kelsey has to intervene. And when she finds Vianna's dead body at the foot of the church steps, everyone's plans fall apart. With both the wedding and Barton Farm at risk of being permanently shut down, Kelsey has to work hard to save her own happily ever after. Book excerpt: In September 2005, just days after Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans, journalists from the Times-Picayune and WWL-TV asked for and received assistance from LSU's Manship School of Mass Communication. The staff of the Times-Picayune used the School's computer labs to publish an online edition of the paper within hours of their arrival and a print edition just five days after the storm. WWL-TV reporters set up shop in the School's television facility and were on the air a few hours later, telling Katrina's story. What happened at the Manship School during that September week affirmed the ascendancy of this illustrious program. From a single journalism course offered during the 1912--1913 session, the LSU Manship School of Mass Communication has a long, rich tradition of excellence. In The Manship School, Ronald Garay, a longtime faculty member and former associate dean, traces not only the story of the Manship School but its role in the evolution of media education in general. Hugh Mercer Blain, a professor in the English department at LSU in the early 1900s, created the first LSU journalism courses and curriculum with the support of then LSU president Thomas Boyd, making LSU one of the first universities to offer journalism education. Garay describes Blain's efforts to structure a fledgling journalism department and his success in gaining national recognition for what soon would become the LSU School of Journalism and later the Manship School of Mass Communication. Garay chronicles the subsequent building of full-fledged journalism units in liberal arts colleges; the addition of new fields such as broadcasting, advertising, public relations, and political communication; the creation of doctoral programs; and the emergence of serious research on the impact of media on society. Throughout, Garay introduces the students, faculty, directors, and alumni who played important roles in the school's history -- including pioneer political consultant Raymond Strother, former Associated Press head Wes Gallagher, and Reader's Digest chairman and former CEO Thomas Ryder -- and details the evolution of LSU's student media, particularly The Reveille, KLSU-FM, and Tiger-TV. The book also describes the Manship School's emergence as an independent college at LSU and Dean John Maxwell Hamilton's role in re-orienting the School's intellectual and professional mission, raising the School's stature and visibility nationally, and incorporating state-of-the-art technology in classrooms and labs. The Manship School provides a valuable and comprehensive record of one of LSU's most distinguished units.
