Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Irish Fairy Lore has well been called by Mr. Alfred Nutt, one of the leading authorities on the subject, ÒAs fair and bounteous a harvest of myth and romance as ever flourished among any race,Ó and Dr. Joyce, the well-known Irish scholar and historian, states: Òthat it is very probable that the belief in the existence of fairies came in with the earliest colonists that entered Ireland, and that this belief is recorded in the oldest of native Irish writings in a way that proves it to have been, at the time treated of, long established and universally received.Ó Colgan himself supplies us with the name and derivation of the Irish word for fairy, Sidh (shee), still used throughout the country. ÒFantastical spirits,Ó he writes, Òare by the Irish called men of the Sidh, because they are seen, as it were, to come out of the beautiful hills to infest men, and hence the vulgar belief that they reside in certain subterranean habitations; and sometimes the hills themselves are called by the Irish Sidhe or Siodha.Ó In ColganÕs time, then, the fairy superstition had passed from the upper classes, gradually disenthralled of it by the influence of Christianity to the common people, among whom it is still rife. But it is clear that in the time of St. Patrick a belief in a world of fairies existed even in the KingÕs household, for it is recorded that Òwhen the two daughters of King Leary of Ireland, Ethnea the fair and Fedelma the ruddy, came early one morning to the well of Clebach to wash, they found there a synod of holy bishops with Patrick. And they knew not whence they came, or in what form, or from what people, or from what country; but they supposedÊthem to be Duine Sidh, or gods of the earth, or a phantasm.Ó As suggested, the belief of the Princesses obtains to this very day amongst the peasantry of remote districts in Ireland, who still maintain that the fairies inhabit the Sidhe, or hills, and record instances of relations and friends being transported into their underground palaces. The truth is that the Gaelic peasant, Scotch and Irish, is a mystic, and believes not only in this world, and the world to come, but in that other world which is the world of Faery, and which exercises an extraordinary influence upon many actions of his life.

Download or read book Celtic Mythology & The Religion of the Ancient Celts written by John Arnott MacCulloch and published by DigiCat. This book was released on 2023-11-16 with total page 608 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Celtic Mythology" is a study on ancient folk tales and legends of old Ireland, Wales and other Celtic regions, which remained a precious legacy to their illustrative history. The book deals with different aspects of folklore and mythology: myths of the creation, tales of gods and their position and behavior, the mythical creatures and animals, folk tales of the divine land and many more. Well grounded in history and sociology, the author relates these folk tales, legends and myths of Gaelic, Brythonic and Gaulish people to each other and explores the influence of Christianity on their development through the ages. "The Religion of the Ancient Celts" is an exhaustive and comprehensive study of the Celtic religion. It provides insights into Celtic religious practices, and comparisons geographically as well as with more familiar Roman and Christian pantheons. The author offers numerous interpretations and overlaps regarding the mythological roles of gods and goddesses. The Celts interacted with many cultures over the years and adopted their gods and combined with theirs. Roman and Greek gods were adopted as were Vikings' and Christianity later.
Book Synopsis THE HIGH DEEDS OF FINN AND OTHER BARDIC ROMANCES OF IRELAND by : Anon E. Mouse
Download or read book THE HIGH DEEDS OF FINN AND OTHER BARDIC ROMANCES OF IRELAND written by Anon E. Mouse and published by Abela Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2017-07-28 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Herein you will find 20 tales, from the Emerald Isle. There are seven bardic romances like, The Children of Lir, The Secret Of Labra, The Vengeance Of Mesgedra and five more besides. Also contained herein are thirteen legends, each a tale in itself, tracing the life of Finn mac Cumhal from boyhood through adulthood including the The Birth Of Oisín and his Visit To The Land Of Youth only to return to find that his father, Finn, had fallen at the battle of Brea three hundred years before. Lastly, The History Of King Cormac is recounted from the time of his birth, his judgement, marriage, disappearance and his death. The 16 Georgian style, color plates by Stephen Reid (1873 – 1948) portray scenes from these tales and are exquisite and sumptuous in their color and detail. The two most conspicuous figures in ancient Irish legend are Cuchulain, who lived in the reign of Conor mac Nessa immediately before the Christian era, and Finn son of Cumhal, who appears in literature as the captain of a military order devoted to the service of the High King of Ireland during the 3rd century. As such, this volume is mainly concerned with the exploits of Fin mac Cumhal and the Fianna of Erinn. The romantic tales retold here belong neither to the category of folk-lore nor of myth, although most contain elements of both. They belong to the bardic literature of ancient Ireland, a literature written with an artistic purpose by men who possessed in the highest degree the native culture of their land and time. Once again, you’re invited to curl up with a unique piece of ancient Irish folklore and let the Gift of the Irish enchant and captivate you. This volume has not been seen in print for over one hundred years—don’t miss this golden opportunity.
