Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What do we mean when we talk about the text of Piers Plowman? What is the concept of a literary text when that construct exists in so many variant and feral forms, as is the case for the multiple modern editorial reconstructions and the more than fifty surviving manuscripts and early print editions of Piers Plowman? How do the anonymous roles of author, scribe, and reader intersect to create the experience of the text? How can we judge a pre-modern text’s reception history if we do not know exactly what it was that the early reader was responding to? This book takes a daring and innovative approach to answering such questions as these. It is a micro-study of one particular historic version of Piers Plowman, its scribe, and its fifteenth and sixteenth-century readers: British Library Cotton Caligula A XI, a manuscript which combines the C, A, and B texts of the poem, and which was likely copied out in the first quarter of the fifteenth century. It reads the Cotton Piers not as an ossified relic whose value lies in what can be gleaned from it about modes of scribal production and Cot’s textual relationship to other Piers manuscripts, but as a living text meant to be experienced and enjoyed as a work of literature in its own right. In gaining a better comprehension at the micro-level of this particular historic version, a better understanding of the whole concept of Piers Plowman itself emerges.

Book excerpt: Martin Collier is a stagehand on “Seaside Spectacular” where he falls for an unattainable dancer and where he suspects that Gerry Neon, the star of the show, may be his father. Only his mother knows for sure… Set in the summer of 1985 in the northern coastal town of Grumby, The End of the Pier explores the Great British seaside resort and the much-loved Variety show. There is sea air and sand castles, comedians and jugglers; but this is no postcard from the good old days as sex and violence are never far away. …and when Martin learns something about his mother - a secret, a lie - he is compelled to search into her dark past and to confront his own painful history. “Striking, compelling… A sharply observed evocation of a dying world. The writing is superb, the characters unforgettable and the ending incredibly moving. One of the best debuts I've read. Highly recommended.” Stav Sherez, Author of A Dark Redemption “Lifts the curtain on the dark reality of summer season shows. Characters recognisable but stripped of cheap sentiment. A great read.” Tony Peers, veteran comedian, actor and producer “Fantastic! Gripping. Nostalgic. Brought back memories. I was there!” Kevin McFarlane, Technical Stage Manager, Lyceum Theatre, Crewe

Book excerpt: A dazzling insider’s account of the contemporary art world and the stunning rise and fall of the charismatic American art dealer Inigo Philbrick, as seen through the eyes of his friend and fellow dealer In development as a series for HBO Orlando Whitfield and Inigo Philbrick met in 2006 at London’s Goldsmiths University where they became best friends. By 2007 they had started I&O Fine Art. Orlando would eventually set up his own gallery and watch as Inigo quickly immersed himself in a world of private jets and multimillion-dollar deals for major clients. Inigo seemed brilliant, but underneath the extravagant façade, his complicated financial schemes were unraveling. With debt, lawsuits, and court summonses piling up, Inigo went into a tailspin of lies and subterfuge. At around the same time, Orlando would himself experience a nervous breakdown and leave the art world for good. By 2019 things had spiraled enough out of control for Inigo to flee to the remote island nation of Vanuatu, 300 miles west of Fiji. Within a year, he was arrested by the FBI and extradited to America, where he was sentenced to seven years in prison for having committed more than $86 million in fraud. All That Glitters is at once a shocking and compulsive story of ambition and downfall, a cautionary tale, and an intimate portrait of friendship and its loss.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Set during the Great Depression, Sarah Bird's Last Dance on the Starlight Pier is a novel about one woman—and a nation—struggling to be reborn from the ashes. July 3. 1932. Shivering and in shock, Evie Grace Devlin watches the Starlite Palace burn into the sea and wonders how she became a person who would cause a man to kill himself. She’d come to Galveston to escape a dark past in vaudeville and become a good person, a nurse. When that dream is cruelly thwarted, Evie is swept into the alien world of dance marathons. All that she has been denied—a family, a purpose, even love—waits for her there in the place she dreads most: the spotlight. Last Dance on the Starlight Pier is a sweeping novel that brings to spectacular life the enthralling worlds of both dance marathons and the family-run empire of vice that was Galveston in the Thirties. Unforgettable characters tell a story that is still deeply resonant today as America learns what Evie learns, that there truly isn’t anything this country can’t do when we do it together. That indomitable spirit powers a story that is a testament to the deep well of resilience in us all that allows us to not only survive the hardest of hard times, but to find joy, friends, and even family, in them.

Book excerpt: Over unbridled waves, a young man ventures down a massive wooden pier, pursuing the beauty in the sea. As the cool summer breeze pushes through his hair, he ponders his reflection upon the tranquil surface and asks, "Who am I?" He never imagined asking a single question would unveil a treacherous seascape. Fierce storms darken a pristine sky as branches descend from the pier and charade temptation as truth. Incited by a submerged deadly foe, delusion, desire, deception, and dread come to life. Uncertain of his path, the young man finds insight for his journey in an unexpected friendship with a frail, homeless man. Unraveling clues cloaked in paradox, the young man must choose to reside upon the pier or battle the predator lurking in the depths. As the young man weathers the seasons of life, is the seascape only what he perceives, or is there more? Will he find the answers in the sea? Will he know the pier?

Think again. 75 years after George Orwell's classic expose on life in the North, Stephen Armstrong returns to find that many things have changed, but not always for the better. Here he finds how young girls go missing because of the intransigence of the benefits systems, how fragile hope can be in the face of poverty and why the government stands in the way of a community helping itself. In his journey, taking in Bradford, Sheffield, Liverpool and Wigan, Armstrong reveals a society at the end of its tether, abandoned by all those who speak in its name.

Book excerpt: The Dark Theatre is an indispensable text for activist communities wondering what theatre might have to do with their futures, students and scholars across Theatre and Performance Studies, Urban Studies, Cultural Studies, Political Economy and Social Ecology. The Dark Theatre returns to the bankrupted warehouse in Hope (Sufferance) Wharf in London’s Docklands where Alan Read worked through the 1980s to identify a four-decade interregnum of ‘cultural cruelty’ wreaked by financialisation, austerity and communicative capitalism. Between the OPEC Oil Embargo and the first screening of The Family in 1974, to the United Nations report on UK poverty and the fire at Grenfell Tower in 2017, this volume becomes a book about loss. In the harsh light of such loss is there an alternative to the market that profits from peddling ‘well-being’ and pushes prescriptions for ‘self-help’, any role for the arts that is not an apologia for injustice? What if culture were not the solution but the problem when it comes to the mitigation of grief? Creativity not the remedy but the symptom of a structural malaise called inequality? Read suggests performance is no longer a political panacea for the precarious subject but a loss adjustor measuring damages suffered, compensations due, wrongs that demand to be put right. These field notes from a fire sale are a call for angry arts of advocacy representing those abandoned as the detritus of cultural authority, second-order victims whose crime is to have appealed for help from those looking on, audiences of sorts.
