The author explores the main dietary approaches that have been advocated in ASD. For each approach, the author explores the potential benefits; evidence for and against the diet and its relation to different genetic conditions; and information, where available, on relevant publications, web resources and support groups. The author proposes an approach, the Simple Restriction Diet (SRD), which he describes in detail, explaining how to implement this approach and how to use it to work out whether a dietary approach is of benefit. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to present an account of several different studies of the relationship of food additives to child behavior and learn ing problems. Because the outcome of these studies has deep, personal interest for many parents and their children, I have tried to present the studies in such a way that the logic and evidence of the studies is com prehensible to informed adults interested in weighing the facts for themselves. Unfortunately, the facts do not always follow a straightfor ward course. Part of my purpose has been to show the complexities lying in the way of the answers to apparently simple questions. I believe it is healthy and important for parents to examine the scientific evidence on issues affecting their daily lives, and to become aware of the process of research surrounding controversial claims regarding new therapies. New ideas in behavioral science are often difficult to track down and evaluate, and consequently there may be a large gap between therapeu tic claims and evidence bearing on those claims. The mother who won ders whether her child should be treated with a special diet is unlikely to have the facts necessary to make a judgment of the costs and benefits. She should however, know some of the major pitfalls in coming to a conclusion for or against such a course.

Book excerpt: The Kid-Friendly ADHD & Autism Cookbook, 3rd Edition explains the best diets for children with food intolerances and hypersensitivities that stem from altered biochemistry and which may be causing problems in learning, behavior, development, attention, sensory responses, sleep, and digestion. The authors provide guidelines to help parents determine which diets may be helpful for their child’s specific symptoms and needs. One of the challenges that parents face is coping with children who have picky appetites and crave the very foods that negatively affect their behavior, focus, and development. Linked to this is the challenge of finding ways to get their children to eat the healthy foods that will improve their nutrition. This book provides suggestions for feeding picky eaters, including those with texture issues. The 3rd edition of The Kid-Friendly ADHD & Autism Cookbook provides a current and greatly expanded review of the most commonly used diets that are important in the treatment of ADHD and autism. There are recipes appropriate to specific diets as indicated by icons and descriptors with each recipe. The authors share details about just how and why each diet works, examine specialty ingredients in-depth, and provide extensive resources and references. The specialty diets covered include: Gluten-free, casein-free, soy-free Feingold diet: low phenol, low salicylate diet Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD) and Gut and Psychology Syndrome Diet (GAPS) Anti-yeast/candida diets, or Body Ecology Diet Low Oxalate Diet (LOD) FODMAP (Fermentable Oligo-, Di- and Mono-saccharides, And Polyols) Anti-inflammatory diet Rotation diet Despite the restrictions of these diets, this cookbook offers an array of tasty choices that kids and the whole family will love, including shakes, muffins, breads, rice and beans, vegetables, salads, main dishes, stews, and even sweets and treats. You’ll also find recommendations for school lunches and snacks. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Each year, millions of children take Ritalin, which means thousands of doctors are diagnosing them with hyperactivity or ADD. But what do these diagnoses mean? Are drugs the answer for these illnesses? And most importantly, is your child getting the proper treatment for his or her problem? In The Hyperactivity Hoax, neuropsychiatrist Dr. Sydney Walker cogently explores the medical minefield of hyperactivity and helps parents arrive at safe, effective answers for their children, without unnecessarily drugging them with potentially dangerous mind-altering medicine. Included in his in-depth guide is: * How to determine if your child needs medical help * How to find a good doctor, a real diagnosis, and effective treatment * How to assert yourself when talking to doctors and school officials * How to evaluate both traditional and alternative approaches to treating hyperactivity and ADD * And much more invaluable information in caring for your child's health. A myth-shattering book no parent can afford to miss! "This book is a disturbing but compelling must-read for any parent whose child shows signs of a hyperactivity disorder or is using Ritalin now."--Publishers Weekly
