Book excerpt: The downtown area of today's Washington, D.C., has become an armed camp. Men with assault rifles crouch on top of monuments and buildings. Anti-missile sites bristle on the White House roof. Meter maids carry Glocks and tactical radios, all in the name of federal CT: counterterrorism. In Cold Frame, the dramatic new thriller by P. T. Deutermann, a secret committee of government and civilian officials puts names on the Kill List, which targets overseas threats to America for termination. When a senior bureaucrat who is part of the Kill List process dies in Washington under mysterious circumstances that include a beautiful woman, a glass of wine, and a bouquet of flowers, Metro detective Av Smith is tasked to investigate. Smith and his fellow detectives soon find themselves besieged by a hornet's nest of intrigue and deception. With the aid of an FBI agent and a reclusive scientist who nurtures unusual interests, Av digs deeper into the mystery---only to become the target of a plan that reaches into the highest levels of the federal government, and far exceeds the mission of the Kill List itself. Set in contemporary Washington, D.C., amidst the Byzantine counterterrorism bureaucracy, Cold Frame is a compelling thriller by masterful novelist P. T. Deutermann, whose insider knowledge of how the military, federal, and local intelligence agencies work---or don't---illuminates the dark world of Washington's War on Terror.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dark hours: They occur when we find things spiraling out of control, when we feel most vulnerable and incapable of finding a solution. In a world often turned dark and cold, more and more people seem to be trapped in nightmarish circumstances. Americans, the world's optimists, when faced with an intractable situation, are taught to believe that through hardwork and will power they can "beat the odds." Yet, according to David Heenan, keeping one's nose to the grindstone may actually make things worse. Bright Triumphs From Dark Hours examines the lives of ten extraordinary people who overcame great adversity in their personal or professional lives by applying winning strategies that guided them out of the darkness of near-defeat and into the light of success. From New York City school chancellor Joel Klein taking on the monumental task of overhauling the city's embattled public school system to renowned scientist Shirley Ann Jackson breaking down barriers to become the first African American woman to receive a doctorate from MIT and head a major research university to retired U.S. Navy Commander Scott Waddle reshaping his life after the Ehime Maru disaster--in these inspiring stories Heenan identifies key strategies that helped each person stay upbeat in the swirling vortex of tough times. The final chapter outlines these practices in greater detail and explains how they can be used to create personal roadmaps to negotiate life's darkest hours--from which come its greatest successes, its brightest triumphs.

Download or read book Decision 2030 written by Michael Stein and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2011-07-22 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent news of a California city to outlaw circumcision, and anti-Semitic and anti-Zionistic activities at many U.S. Universities has already caused many Jews to recoil in horror. Bothered by this, history teacher and author Michael Stein decides to write a compelling fiction, Decision 2030, about the Jews' decision to fight or leave. This book is a fictional account of a Jewish community, Grayvelt, that is suffering from physical and political attacks on a massive scale in the years prior to 2030. Because of the damage done to the Jewish quality of life, the community responds in two different directions. One choice is to remain in the U.S, and fight with the help of competent civilian soldiers; another choice is to move to the northern part of Israel into a new community. The three major emerging Jewish heroes are Earle Smith, Gloria Resnick, and Rabbi Moshe Weinhauser. The Jews are helped by four non-Jewish couples known as the Fearsome Foursome. The four couples show the Jews how to fight back. The growing admiration between the Jewish community and the fearsome Foursome results in the winning strategy to minimize the terrible effects of the anti-Semitic Edgar Brown Society. Decision 2030 contains the different points of view to remain or leave the U.S. for Israel. It has a great deal of adventure dealing with fire bombings, car and truck chases, midnight attacks, and military attacks. It also has nearly a dozen examples of alliteration which came forth in the natural flow of the author's pen. The novel also contains an original prayer and an alliterative poem.

Download or read book Ted Kennedy written by John A. Farrell and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2022-10-25 with total page 785 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: LONGLISTED FOR THE 2022 NATIONAL BOOK AWARD FOR NONFICTION An enthralling and ground-breaking new biography of one of modern America’s most fascinating and consequential political figures, drawing on important new sources, by an award-winning biographer who covered Kennedy closely for many years John A. Farrell’s magnificent biography of Edward M. Kennedy is the first single-volume life of the great figure since his death. Farrell’s long acquaintance with the Kennedy universe and the acclaim accorded his previous books—including his New York Times bestselling biography of Richard Nixon, a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize—helped garner him access to a remarkable range of new sources, including segments of Kennedy’s personal diary and his private confessions to members of his family in the days that followed the accident on Chappaquiddick. Farrell is, without question, one of America’s greatest political biographers and a storyteller of deep wisdom and empathy. His book does full justice to this famously epic and turbulent life of almost unimaginable tragedy and triumph. As the fourth son of the close-knit but fiercely competitive Kennedy clan, Ted was the runt of the litter. Expelled from Harvard University for cheating, he was a fun-loving playboy who nevertheless served his brothers loyally and effectively. It was easy to take Ted lightly, and many did. But when he was elected to the United States Senate at the age of thirty to fill his brother Jack’s seat, something unexpected happened: he found his home and his calling there. Over time, Ted Kennedy would build arguably the most significant senatorial career in American history. His life was buffeted by heartbreak: the violent deaths of his three older brothers, his own terrible plane crash, his children’s bouts with cancer, and the hideous self-inflicted wounds of Chappaquiddick and stretches of drinking and womanizing that caused irreparable damage to an already fragile first marriage. Those wounds scarred Ted deeply but also tempered his character, and, eventually, he embarked on a run as legislator, party elder, and paterfamilias of the Kennedy family that would change America for the better. John A. Farrell brings us the man as he was, in strength and weakness, his profound but complicated inheritance and his vital legacy, as only a great biographer can do. Without the story this book tells, no understanding of modern America can be complete.
Book Synopsis The New Brothers Grimm and Their Left Behind Fairy Tales by : David T. Morgan
Download or read book The New Brothers Grimm and Their Left Behind Fairy Tales written by David T. Morgan and published by Mercer University Press. This book was released on 2006 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The New Brother's Grimm examines the twelve volumes of the very popular Left Behind series by Tim LaHaye and Jerry B. Jenkins, relating the story and the theological arguments of each book and then challenging those arguments. One of the centerpieces of their interpretation of the Bible is that the church of Christ will be raptured to be with Christ for seven years. During that time people who have been left behind will have an opportunity to accept Christ as savior, but they will have to pass through the tribulation'a time of unimaginable horror with Satan ruling the world. At its end, Christ will appear with his heavenly army and defeat the forces of Antichrist in the battle of Armageddon. After that Christ will establish an earthly kingdom lasting exactly 1000 years, during which Satan will be bound in the bottomless pit. Ultimately, the author suggests that the theological premises set forth in the series are at best dubious and at worst theological snake oil.
