Download or read book The Clumsiest People in Europe written by Favell Lee Mortimer and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the middle of the 1800s, Mrs Favell Lee Mortimer set out to write an ambitious guide to all the nations on Earth. There were just three problems: She had never set foot outside Shropshire. She was horribly misinformed about virtually every topic she turned her attention to. And she was prejudiced against foreigners. The result was an unintentionally hilarious masterpiece: 'The French like being smart but are not very clean.' 'The Japanese are very polite people - much politer than the Chinese - but very proud.' 'The Scotch will not take much trouble to please strangers.' In The Clumsiest People in Europe, Todd Pruzan has gathered together a selection of Mrs Mortimer's finest moments, celebrating the woman who turned ignorance into an art form.

This book was released on 2012 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Set among the sugar plantations of Jamaica and the balls and masquerades of Georgian London the story is told by the Lee family in their own words. In 1749 thirteen year-old Robert Cooper Lee sailed to Jamaica taking a parcel of ribbons for sale. When his family was left all but penniless, Robert and his brothers forged new lives in Jamaica, fathered children with women who were the descendants of slaves and supported their sister left behind in England. Robert returned to London with his family in 1771. A prominent attorney, respected throughout Jamaica and among the West Indian lobby in London, he had built a fortune that enabled his children to mix with royalty. This remarkable collection of letters tells a story of triumph against adversity, of a family that suffered sickness, bankruptcy, sudden death, a clandestine marriage and an elopement. Through it all the bonds of family endured.

Book Synopsis Women, Theology and Evangelical Children’s Literature, 1780-1900 by : Irene Euphemia Smale
Download or read book Women, Theology and Evangelical Children’s Literature, 1780-1900 written by Irene Euphemia Smale and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-01-12 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a wealth of fascinating information about many significant and lesser-known nineteenth-century Christian authors, mostly women, who were motivated to write material specifically for children’s spiritual edification because of their personal faith. It explores three prevalent theological and controversial doctrines of the period, namely Soteriology, Biblical Authority and Eschatology, in relation to children’s specifically engendered Christian literature. It traces the ecclesiastical networks and affiliations across the theological spectrum of Evangelical authors, publishers, theologians, clergy and scholars of the period. An unprecedented deluge of Evangelical literature was produced for millions of Sunday School children in the nineteenth century, resulting in one of its most prolific and profitable forms of publishing. It expanded into a vast industry whose magnitude, scope and scale is discussed throughout this book. Rather than dismissing Evangelical children’s literature as simplistic, formulaic, moral didacticism, this book argues that, in attempting to convert the mass reading public, nineteenth-century authors and publishers developed a complex, highly competitive genre of children’s literature to promote their particular theologies, faith and churchmanships, and to ultimately save the nation.

Book excerpt: Covering the history of the Plunket Society from 1907 to the present day, this book is organized around three dominant themes that contribute both to international historiography and to the social history of New Zealand. These themes are the mixed economy of welfare, maternal and infant health, and motherhood and parenting. Discussed in detail is how these three strands form an important contribution to New Zealand's social history. In particular, the public role of women as welfare providers, maternal and child health provision, and parenting roles and practices are examined. An in-depth study of the voluntary welfare system, this book will be of interest to welfare historians, women's studies historians, social historians of medicine, and government policy makers.
