Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fauna of British India, Vol. 5: Including Ceylon and Burma The most noteworthy incident which has arisen in connection with this family since it was previously enumerated in this series is a question of nomenclature, and applies to the name of the family itself. The question was first raised by the late Mr. Kirkaldy, who advocated the view that a family name should be founded on the oldest genus it embraced, and should be changed accordingly. He proposed three different emendations: - Myodochidae = Lygaeidae, auctt., Kirk., Entomologist, xxxii, p. 220 (1899). Geocoridae = Lygaeidae, auctt., Kirk., J. Bombay Nat. Hist. Soc. xiv, p. 306 (1902). Pyrrhocoridae = Lygaeidae + Pyrrhocoridae, auctt., Kirk., Faun. Hawaiien. iii, pt. ii, p. 158 (1902). The first of these substitutions has now been adopted by several writers on the family, but others and myself retain the original name. It is a similar disturbance in nomenclature as was advocated for the change of the well-known family name Capsidae to that of Miridae (cf. vol. ii, p. 413) and may well be left in the area of nomenclatory disputation. To add to the confusion, and by necessity, Kirkaldy then proposed that the deposed name Lygaeidae should be substituted for another well known and universally employed family name Coreidae. This suggestion, however, he recently discarded (Canad. Ent. 1910, p.63), again adopted the name Coreidaee and advocated that Lygaeidaee should pass away into the realms of synonymy. The effect of these propositions has been disastrous; Dr. Sharp, in compiling the last Zoological Record, has been compelled, owing to the confusion now existing, to treat the families Coreidae, Lygaeidae, and Pyrrhocoridae in combination. Since the enumeration of the Lygaeidaee was published in these volumes, Dr. Horvath has published an excellent monograph of the Colobathristinae as restricted by himself. The late Dr. Breddin lias also described a number of species from Ceylon, accompanied by a considerable dislocation of the usually observed sequence in the arrangement of the subfamilies. These publications are incorporated in the following pages, but I have not seen any of Breddin's types, and in his description of species it should be remembered that that writer pursued an analytical rather than a synthetic process. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fauna of British India, Vol. 1: Including Ceylon and Burma The author has produced a work which combines the highest scientific standard with a system which readily enables the sportsman or amateur to identify the various birds of British India. He has himself drawn attention to the imperative need of the trinominal system of nomen clature and he has modernised the generic and specific names in accordance with the rules of the International Congress. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fauna of British India, Vol. 4: Including Ceylon and Burma This the fourth volume of the Rhynchota in the 'Fauna of British India' series deals with the Membracidae, Cercopidae, and Jassidae, the last a most obscure family of Homoptera, and the Appendix (which has been commenced) includes such species of the Pentatoraidae, Coreidae, and Berytidae as have been added to the Indian Fauna since the publication in 1902 of Vol. I. of the Rhynchota. The arrangement and classification of the Indian Jassidae has been a most arduous task, as so little pioneer work had been done heretofore in this obscure group. It is hoped, however, that the arrangement adopted, though it may hereafter be subjected to revision, will fulfil the primary object to which all the volumes of the 'Fauna of British India' series are directed, viz. that of enabling students of Natural History in India to recognize and identify the forms of animal life they meet with in the course of their collecting. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fauna of British India, Vol. 3: Including Ceylon and Burma Mr. Oates, after writing the two volumes containing the descriptions of the Passeres, was obliged to return to his appointment in India, as explained in the Preface to the second volume. The continuation of the Birds has been left in my hands, and I have endeavoured to keep the work uniform in general plan, and to render the change of author ship as little conspicuous as possible; but I fear there are many, besides myself, who will see cause for regret that the able ornithologist who commenced the work was prevented by circumstances from finishing it. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fauna of British India, Including Ceylon and Burma, Vol. 4: Birds The Vertebrate animals of British India have now been described for the first time in a single uniform series, consisting of eight volumes, of which this is the last to appear. The work comprises two volumes on Fishes by the late Dr. E. Day, one on Reptiles and Batrachians by Mr. G. Boulenger, and two on Birds by Mr. E. W'. Oates; the remaining two volumes of Birds and one on Mammals, together with the editing of the whole, having been my own contribution to the undertaking. Five volumes on Inverte brata - four on the Moths of British India by Sir G. F. Hampson, and one on the Hymenoptera by Colonel C. T. Bingham - have also been published on the same plan. The work has fully occupied me during the fifteen years that have now elapsed since my retirement from Indian service; but the completion of the Vertebrate series would not have been practicable without the valuable Cooperation of the able naturalists already mentioned. This volume contains the Pigeons, the Gallinaceous birds, and the numerous tribes commonly classed together as Waders and Swimming birds. It thus includes all the Game Birds, both of land and water - an arrangement which may be found convenient, although good separate works on the subject exist, containing fuller details than are consistent with the limits of the present publication. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fauna of British India, Vol. 2: Including Ceylon and Burma; Rhynchota (Heteroptera) The second volume of the Rhynchota, by Mr. W. L. Distant., is published in two Parts, of which the first, comprising pp. 1-242, appeared in December 1903, and the other is now issued. Several of the families included in the volume have hitherto received but little attention in India, and consequently the number of genera and species described for the first time is considerable. The first volume of Rhynchota, containing the families Pentatomidae, Coreidae, and Berytidae, was issued in June 1902. The present volume contains nearly all the remaining families of the Gymnocerata, and includes the Lygaeidae, Pyrrhocoridae, Tingididae, Phymatidae, Aradidae, Hebridae, Hydrometridae, Henicocephalidae, Reduviidae, Saldidae, Ceratocombidae, Cimicidae 3 and Capsidae, leaving the Anthocoridae and the Cryptocerata to be described in order to complete the account of the Indian Heteroptera. The Homoptera also remain to be dealt with. A sketch of the structural details and a brief account of the scheme of classification, with a synopsis of the families of Heteroptera, were comprised in the Introduction to the first volume. All general remarks not contained in that Introduction are deferred by the Author until the Rhynchota are completed. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fauna of British India, Vol. 3: Including Ceylon and Burma So long ago as 1903, W. T. Blanford remarked that it was not proposed to proceed for the present with the publication of the remainder of the Hymenoptera of British India; but considering the peculiar interest and economic importance of the Ichneumonidæ, it was to be hoped that an account of them would appear at some future time. He added that our knowledge of this group was then less perfect than that of the Aculeata, a statement which is still very true. In January, 1908, the succeeding editor, Lt.-Col. C. T. Bingham, asked me to prepare a volume on this interesting family; and I have herein compiled to the best of my ability, though the task of bringing into tabular form genera and species described in six languages throughout an extremely scattered literature has not been light. The published species of Indian Ichneumonidæ were computed by H. Maxwell Lefroy to number two hundred and eighty-eight in 1909, showing how little had been attempted in this direction; and the amount left to be done truly appeared appalling from the same author's statement(Indian Insect Life,' p. 178) that "nothing is on record as to the hosts of these species and the forms occurring in India are practically unknown." Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fauna of British India, Vol. 2: Including Ceylon and Burma, Coleoptera Lamellicornia Although issued in the midst of the great European struggle, the chief part of the work represented by this volume was accomplished in more peaceful days when labourers in the various fields of science still worked throughout Europe in friendly co-operation and the war existed only in the programmes of German political ambition. Thanks to such co-operation I have had the great advantage of being able to examine the types of most of the previously-known Indian species figuring here. As before, the names of those of which a type or co-type has been examined are marked with an asterisk. Many of these types are in the British Museum, but for the loan of the rest I am indebted to the willing help of the many friends who, at my request, have submitted them for my examination with invariable courtesy and kindness.
