Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Father of the American Navy The Original, Colonial, Navy which existed during the time of the Colonies, was dismantled, crews discharged and officers mustered out, at the termination of the Revolutionary war, for want of money to continue it. Only one officer (John Paul Jones) was continued in the Government employ, as American Commissioner at L'Oriente, France, to settle the very complicated tangle of ownership, prize claims, etc., as some of the ships were letter-of-marque, some privateers and some men of war, but nearly all had mixed American and French crews. These vessels had won about 80 per cent of their battles, and there were as many as 74,000 men in them. Washington's Army never numbered more than 20,000 at one time. In the original Colonial Navy there were 42 Captains, of whom the senior was Eseck Hopkins of Rhode Island, who was appointed Commander in Chief, with rank equal to that of General Washington. He was the brother of Stephen Hopkins, a signer of the Declaration of Independence, and native born. His admirers speak of him as Father of the American Navy, and though there is a distinction between the Colonial Navy and the U. S. Navy they were equally American. Columbus is credited with the Discovery of America, though he never saw the continent, but did discover the Bahamas and Antilles, and thus blazed the way for the following discoverers. But, in the Naval Service, we have held that Congress was the Father of the Navy, and not any individual. The first Regulations for the Navy were prepared by John Paul Jones, when a first lieutenant. His youth, evidently, prevented his appointment as Captain at once. But his success as a fighter and his general superiority, mentally, diplomatically, personally, won his promotion to Captain very soon. And his admirers call him the Father of the American Navy. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Commodore John Barry: The Father of the American Navy; A Survey of Extraordinary Episodes in His Naval Career While Barry was in London with his ship, the Black Prince, much history was being made - and observing the trend of events, he, in September, 1775, hastily returned to Philadelphia. He arrived home on October 13, the very day Congress resolved to fit out two armed cruiserse one of fourteen guns, the other of ten gun's Barrv at once offered his ship and services to Congress, which were accepted. S Navy, 1856-48, 1861-63 Samuel Francis Du Pont, Rear Admiral United States Navy, va. oorn at Bergen Point, New Jersey, September 27th, 1803, of French parentage and descent. He was the son of Victor-Marie Du Pont and Gabrille-Josephine de la Fite de Pelleport, daughter of the Marquis de Pelleport. Du Pont de Nemours, Admiral Du Pont's grandfather, well known for his long connection with public affairs in France, came to America with his sons during the closing months of the last century. After a temporary sojourn in New York and New Jersey, the sons established themselves in Delaware, of which State they became citizens. Admiral DuPont was appointed a midshipman in the navy by President Monroe, on the 19th of December, 1815, and for almost fifty years faithfully served his country. Believing that the official dispatches, relating to the wars in which he took part, would be of interest to his family and friends, his widow has had them printed. Book excerpt: The New York Times bestseller from master biographer Evan Thomas brings to life the tumultuous story of the father of the American Navy. John Paul Jones, at sea and in the heat of the battle, was the great American hero of the Age of Sail. He was to history what Patrick O’Brian’s Jack Aubrey and C.S. Forester’s Horatio Hornblower are to fiction. Ruthless, indomitable, clever; he vowed to sail, as he put it, “in harm’s way.” Evan Thomas’s minute-by-minute re-creation of the bloodbath between Jones’s Bonhomme Richard and the British man-of-war Serapis off the coast of England on an autumn night in 1779 is as gripping a sea battle as can be found in any novel. Drawing on Jones’s correspondence with some of the most significant figures of the American Revolution—John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson—Thomas’s biography teaches us that it took fighters as well as thinkers, men driven by dreams of personal glory as well as high-minded principle, to break free of the past and start a new world. Jones’s spirit was classically American.

How we have actively participated in every war in which our nation has engaged, expeditions on every sea, and to every continent except Australia, our own Civil and Indian Wars, quelling riots, protecting American life, property, mail, and Presidents, and a long list of other activities in which Marines have played an im portant part in our history and contact with other nations. I am reminded of a factory in Baltimore which had a large sign painted across the front of the building, Born in Baltimore, raised everywhere. It was an umbrella factory. The Marine Corps was born in Philadelphia in 177 5 and Operates everywhere. End of historical sketch. We are justly proud of our record, and sing with pride that part of our Marine Hymn - From the Halls of Montezuma to the Shores of Tripoli, We Fight Our Country's Battles on the Land as on the Sea. But who took us to the land where we fought? Who took us across the sea? Upon whom did the government place the initial responsibility for the enforcement of its determined policy? The navy. The Navy has been our father and mother, tutored us during our childhood days, afforded Opportunities for us to learn by experience, watched and guard ed our growth to manhood, and demanded of our nation that we be allowed to grow strong and sufficient to perform the tasks which she has assigned to us. DO not weaken in that demand. We say, that by Congressional action, we are the oldest branch of the services. That's our story, and we'll stick to it. But we are proud of that tutelage, of that association, of the fact that the Navy has given us a job that measures up to the responsibility of any other element of the fleet.
