Book excerpt: In the waning age of the nineteenth century, Sal McBride has been separate from her pioneering husband for years. But the time has finally come for her to escape the poverty stricken hovels of Glasgow and rejoin her lover in the vast wilderness of the Canadian prairies. The physical and emotional journey will be a tortuous one. Strong and determined, yet fully alone on the brink of her greatest task ever attempted, Sal will come face to face with the ultimate cruelties of life as her quest exacts its harsh and thankless tolls. Based on the author's own ancestral history, Far Away Hills traces the ups and downs of a young, fragile family struggling to make their way through an unforgiving world. Though the pioneer story has long been thought to be the province of men, Jean Debney's tale of courage, grit, and resolve will prove once again that history's women are far more complex and powerful than records have ever shown.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'The whole trail has been orchestrated to make it possible for each one of us, in different ways, to be "touched" by wilderness' Over the Hills and Far Away is a collection of essays that demonstrates Rob Collister's thirty-year experience in mountaineering. From solo climbing in the hills of the Carneddau in Wales, to small group expeditions to Carn Etchachan, Forbes ridge and Grosshorn, Rob Collister can be found in the hills, whether it be running, climbing or skiing, inspired by the words of H.W. Tilman and Henry David Thoreau. This collection of essays tackles the theme of self-sufficient small group expeditions compared to the organised larger-sized ones, as well as displaying the timeless subject of litter disposal in summits by a fresh invasion of the mountains in Snowdonia and the conservation of the wilderness by the creation of schools such as Wilderness Leadership School. His sense of adventure is shown through his words and passionate descriptions, climbing out of conditions and finding a challenge in Alpine climbing. In Over Hills and Far Away we understand the importance of nature and appreciation of it. This book will expand your knowledge of modern world issues and it will leave you hungry for adventure in the hills.

Book excerpt: 1937 dawned over the golden sun kissed lands of Spain, upon a divided country and a vicious and bloody Civil War. The war had, originally, begun as a simple military coup, back in mid-July of the previous year. At first it looked as though it would carry the day, but due to the early up-rising in the Spanish protectorate of Morocco, the timing of the revolt on the mainland was thrown into disarray, and due to this certain areas didn’t commence their planned revolts at the designated time. In particular, the major cities of Barcelona and Madrid were both critically effected by the timing of these events, and the whole of the 18th July was spent in inactivity. It was this delay, to the originally planned timetable, that enabled the republican government, but more importantly, especially in Barcelona, the unions and other forces on the left, to organise some sort of resistance. It was this fact, which meant that they were able to defeat the rebellion in these, and several other vital towns and cities. By the end of the 20th July, after the first two days of the rebellion, and bitter fighting throughout the length and breadth of the country, the battle lines had been drawn, and Spain was a nation split into two basic zones. The areas that remained loyal, under the control of the government, and the rest of Spain, which was now under the command of the rebel’s or nationalist’s as they were to become known.
