Book excerpt: Diffraction patterns of a circular aperture illuminated by partially coherent light can be calculated for a variety of correlation functions and radially varying intensities. The calculation is facilitated by using a theorem, based on the Wolf formulation of coherent theory, that relates the Fraunhofer intensity of a quasimonochromatic spatially stationary source to the Fourier transform of the product of the source autocorrelation function and the normalized source mutual intensity. Curves are presented for the case of a circular aperture with uniform intensity and exponential correlation. (Author).

Book excerpt: This book offers a clear and interdisciplinary introduction to the structural and scattering properties of complex photonic media, focusing on deterministic aperiodic structures and their conceptual roots in geometry and number theory. It integrates important results and recent developments into a coherent and physically consistent story, balanced between mathematical designs, scattering and optical theories, and engineering device applications. The book includes discussions of emerging device applications in metamaterials and nano-optics technology. Both academia and industry will find the book of interest as it develops the underlying physical and mathematical background in partnership with engineering applications, providing a perspective on both fundamental optical sciences and photonic device technology. Emphasizing the comprehension of physical concepts and their engineering implications over the more formal developments, this is an essential introduction to the stimulating and fast-growing field of aperiodic optics and complex photonics.

Book excerpt: Diffraction: Coherence in Optics presents a detailed account of the course on Fraunhofer diffraction phenomena, studied at the Faculty of Science in Paris. The publication first elaborates on Huygens' principle and diffraction phenomena for a monochromatic point source and diffraction by an aperture of simple form. Discussions focus on diffraction at infinity and at a finite distance, simplified expressions for the field, calculation of the path difference, diffraction by a rectangular aperture, narrow slit, and circular aperture, and distribution of luminous flux in the airy spot. The book then examines Fourier transformation and diffraction by several apertures. The manuscript takes a look at extended luminous sources and objects and diffraction phenomena in perfect optical instruments. Topics include diffraction gratings, phase contrast, apodization, filtering spatial frequencies, relation between the length of wave trains and the spectral width of the emitted radiations, successive wave trains emitted by an atom, and vibrations with different frequencies from a single atom. The manuscript also reviews diffraction phenomena in real optical instruments, including diffraction in the case of a spherical wave and diffraction spot in the presence of aberrations. The publication is a dependable reference for readers interested in diffraction phenomena.

Book excerpt: Diffraction by apertures illuminated by partially coherent light, diffraction by apertures containing random phase disturbances, experimental demonstration of the ergodic hypothesis, and the concept of cross spectral purity are considered. In diffraction experiments using partially coherent illumination, it is observed that as the ratio of aperture size to coherence interval increases (i.e., the illumination becomes less coherent) the sharp minima present in the diffraction pattern disappear and a shifting of the minima occurs. The results are compared with existing theories, and the agreement is excellent. It is experimentally shown that random phase disturbances placed in the diffracting aperture distort an individual diffraction pattern. In the corresponding ensemble-averaged experiment, the distortion is reduced and the diffraction pattern is more readily identified. A dynamical model of lycopodium particles suspended in water demonstrated the equivalence of time and ensemble averaging (ergodic hypothesis). The ensemble-averaged results agree quantitatively with theoretical calculations. In investigating the concept of cross spectral purity (J. Opt. Soc. Am. 51:1342 (1961)), it is shown that quasi monochromaticity is synonymous with spectral purity and that spectral impurity is synonymous with polychromaticity. (Author).

Book excerpt: Applied Photometry, Radiometry, and Measurements of Optical Losses reviews and analyzes physical concepts of radiation transfer, providing quantitative foundation for the means of measurements of optical losses, which affect propagation and distribution of light waves in various media and in diverse optical systems and components. The comprehensive analysis of advanced methodologies for low-loss detection is outlined in comparison with the classic photometric and radiometric observations, having a broad range of techniques examined and summarized: from interferometric and calorimetric, resonator and polarization, phase-shift and ring-down decay, wavelength and frequency modulation to pulse separation and resonant, acousto-optic and emissive - subsequently compared to direct and balancing methods for studying free-space and polarization optics, fibers and waveguides. The material is focused on applying optical methods and procedures for evaluation of transparent, reflecting, scattering, absorbing, and aggregated objects, and for determination of power and energy parameters of radiation and color properties of light.

Book excerpt: Speckle Metrology presents a diverse and wide collection of metrological speckle techniques and applications. The book discusses both theoretical concepts and experimental methods in speckle-based measurements. Some chapters introduce speckle terminology and the physical characteristics of speckle. Other aspects also covered in the book include methodology, system geometries, data reduction procedures, and specific applications. These applications are discussed in detail in individual chapters, such as structures inspection. Adaptation of speckle measurement techniques in video recording and processing technology is also given emphasis in one chapter. Finally, one chapter is dedicated to a discussion on the speckle interferometer as one of the most used instrument in metrological speckle application. This text is a valuable reference to students in the fields of engineering and applied science.
