Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Far Eastern policy pursued during the Roosevelt-Truman administrations has long been the subject of spirited controversy among historians. This volume, first published in 1963, is the result of seven years of intensive research into a mass of documentary data dealing with the Communist conquest of China. “Professor Kubek discusses with unusual candor and clear vision the many mistakes of the Roosevelt and Truman Administrations with reference to the Far East. There are new data and fresh interpretations that lend additional evidence to support the contentions of earlier writers that the diplomacy of the Administrations of Roosevelt and Truman was disastrous in the extreme. The strange actions of General Marshall in China, and his blind policy while Secretary of State, were chief factors in the loss of China to the Communists. In a noteworthy chapter that all Americans should read, Professor Kubek traces in damning detail the tragic role that Marshall played in the fall of Nationalist China. “This is a volume that will earn the sharpest criticisms of the motley hordes that crowded the Roosevelt and Truman bandwagons, but it is a must book for any American who wants to know why the present sawdust Caesar, Khrushchev, can insult at will the President of the United States and can hurl continual threats to “bury” all Americans. Soviet militate might is the direct product of billions of Democratic Lend-Lease aid, coddling of Communists in high places in the American Government, and failure to understand the basic drives of world Communism. Never before in our history was Presidential leadership so devoid of vision, and never before had the mistakes of our Chief Executives been so fraught with peril to our nation. Read this book and then begin to worry about how Americans will fare in the next decade.”—Charles Callan Tansill, Professor Emeritus of Diplomatic History, Georgetown University (Foreword)

Book excerpt: Bringing to bear the latest developments across various areas of research and disciplines, this collection provides a broad perspective on how Western Europe made sense of a complex, multi-faceted, and by and large Sino-centered East and Southeast Asia. The volume covers the transpacific period--after Magellan's opening of the transpacific route to the Far East and before the eventual dominance of the region by the British and the Dutch. In contrast to the period of the Enlightenment, during which Orientalist discourses arose, this initial period of encounters and conquest is characterized by an enormous curiosity and a desire to seize--not only materially but intellectually--the lands and peoples of East Asia. The essays investigate European visions of the Far East--particularly of China and Japan--and examine how and why particular representations of Asians and their cultural practices were constructed, revised, and adapted. Collectively, the essays show that images of the Far East were filtered by worldviews that ranged from being, on the one hand, universalistic and relatively equitable towards cultures to the other extreme, unilaterally Eurocentric.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Democracy and the Eastern Question: The Problem of the Far East as Demonstrated by the Great War, and Its Relation to the United States of America This work is not presented as a non-partizan or an impartial discussion of the subject. It could not be that, for it embodies the deep convictions formed and accumulated in the course of years of close contact with the matters at issue, and the Opin ions which, I hope, shine through the presentation Of the mate rial were born in the process Of living with the problem. Few foreigners that is, few Westerners could live in the far East during the last twenty years and still be impartial on the questions included in the position Of China and her contacts with Japan. Some Of the facts and much of the criticism presented in the following pages were suppressed or repressed during the Great War for reasons at times connected with the war politics of nations. And at times because of legal restraints upon their publication. That time Of restricted publicity has passed with the need, or the fancied need for it, and foreign residents of China and Japan now feel that the truth, and nothing less than the whole truth, about these matters should be known to Western peoples. The design of this work, therefore, is to present the case as it appears to an overwhelming majority of foreign residents of the East. I have not encumbered the book by giving much of the contrary side of events and of the contrary arguments. As in the case of Germany and the re sponsibility of the German military party for the Great War, the evidence is decisively preponderating, although in this case Japan, like Germany, can put in a more or less plausible de fense. I leave that defense to the extensive Japanese props ganda in America and elsewhere. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The prevalence of particular fortress types in medieval China, Mongolia, Japan and Korea demanded the evolution of different modes of siege warfare in each country. The wealthy walled towns of China, the mountain fortresses of Korea and the military outposts of Japan each presented different challenges to besieging forces, and this book reveals the diversity of tactics that were developed to meet these challenges. Most of the Far Eastern weaponry of this period originated in China, but was adapted to fit the demands of siegecraft across the region and the individual strengths and weaknesses of each piece of machinery are studied here.

Book excerpt: Yul Brynner, the mysterious and exotic Hollywood star, was one of four generations in his family to bear that name. His Swiss-born grandfather, Jules, arrived in Shanghai almost by accident about 1865, but within twenty years had become a leading industrialist in the Far East. His business association with Tsar Nicholas II built Vladivostok and the Trans-Siberian Railway, then triggered the Russo-Japanese War, contributing to the fall of the Romanoffs. Jules' s son Boris regained control of the family's mines, but his experiences in China, Manchuria, and North Korea rivaled the ordeals of Dr. Zhivago. Yul's childhood took him to China and then to France, where, as a teenager, he performed in nightclubs with Russian Gypsies while becoming a trapeze acrobat in the circus. He moved to America before he spoke English and within five years was starring on Broadway. His son, with a colorful life of his own, has written the family's history.--From publisher description.
