Download or read book Nakahara written by Thomas Smith and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 1977-06-01 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historians have long been intrigued by Japan's static national population during the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, when the output of the economy was almost certainly growing. Was population held in check by high mortality or low fertility, or by some combination of the two? The author of this monograph suggests an answer through analysis of the population and tax registers of the village of Nakahara between 1717 and 1830. He finds that both mortality and registered fertility in Nakahara were strikingly low by comparison to eighteenth-century European communities. The causes of low mortality are uncertain, but low registered fertility was mainly the result of infanticide. The author shows, surprisingly, that infanticide was not primarily a function of poverty or the desperation of the moment but was practiced as a form of family planning, resulting from a clear understanding of the relationship between farming efficiency and family size and composition in an intensely competitive agrarian economy. The final chapter discusses the extent to which Nakahara may have been representative of rural Japan.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A free ebook version of this title is available through Luminos, University of California Press’s Open Access publishing program for monographs. Visit www.luminosoa.org to learn more. Rules of the House offers a dynamic revisionist account of the Japanese colonial rule of Korea (1910–1945) by examining the roles of women in the civil courts. Challenging the dominant view that women were victimized by the Japanese family laws and its patriarchal biases, Sungyun Lim argues that Korean women had to struggle equally against Korean patriarchal interests. Moreover, women were not passive victims; instead, they proactively struggled to expand their rights by participating in the Japanese colonial legal system. In turn, the Japanese doctrine of promoting progressive legal rights would prove advantageous to them. Following female plaintiffs and their civil disputes from the precolonial Choson dynasty through colonial times and into postcolonial reforms, this book presents a new and groundbreaking story about Korean women’s legal struggles, revealing their surprising collaborative relationship with the colonial state.

Book Synopsis The Rule of Law in Japan by : Carl F. Goodman
Download or read book The Rule of Law in Japan written by Carl F. Goodman and published by Kluwer Law International B.V.. This book was released on 2017-04-01 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Practitioners who deal with Japanese law have put great store by earlier editions of this major work, which systematically compares United States (US) law and Japanese law across all the major fields of legal practice. This fourth revised edition updates the work with the continuing dramatic changes in Japan’s legal system, including changes in criminal trials, disclosures to defense counsel of evidence to be used by the prosecution, the increasing use of recordings of interrogation sessions, and the impact of the indigenous movement for judicial reform. All chapters have been updated. In the fourth revised edition, which follows the same comparative structure as formerly, author Carl Goodman ̄ an internationally known authority with extensive experience in international practice, university teaching in both Japan and the US, and US government service — takes expert stock of new developments, including the following: • the Cabinet’s Declaration reinterpreting the Renunciation of War Clause in the Constitution and legislation following such reinterpretation; • interpretation of new rules for international jurisdiction of Japanese courts, including the new law’s effect on mirror image lawsuits filed in Japan; • the Supreme Court’s rulings dealing with the presumption of paternity, the waiting period for remarriage after divorce, and inheritance rights of “out of wedlock children”; • international and domestic Japanese child custody; • unanticipated consequences of criminal trials before the new mixed lay/professional panels; • debate concerning the Emperor’s announcement of his desired abdication; and • an update of Japan’s experiment with new graduate legal faculties. Although the alteration of the legal landscape in Japan is highly visible, the author does not hesitate to raise questions as to how far-reaching the changes really are. In almost every branch of the new Japanese legal practice he uncovers ways in which laws and judicial rulings are closely qualified and are likely to present challenges in any given case. He reminds the reader in each chapter that “what you see may not be what you get”. For this reason, and for its comprehensive coverage, this new edition is sure to gain new adherents as the best-informed practical guide for non-Japanese lawyers with dealings in Japan.

Download or read book Worldwide Family History written by Noel Currer-Briggs and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-11-01 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1982, Worldwide Family History is an essential reference and guide for the professional genealogist and the interested amateur alike. Concentrating on non-British genealogical problems, it sets out as succinctly as possible the way in which people of English speech but of foreign descent can begin tracing their ancestors. It is designed to be used throughout the English-speaking world, and especially by people of mixed European ancestry. The first part deals with the political and linguistic structure of Europe and includes chapters on genealogy in all European countries. The second part deals with colonial shipping in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, the settlement of the Americas (including chapters on Spanish, Italian, Polish, German, French and Slav emigrants), and a record of the early settlement of Europeans in Australia, South Africa and New Zealand. There is also a chapter on heraldry as an aid to genealogical research. Contributors to the book include the internationally known genealogists—Margaret Audin; H. Jäger-Sunstenau; Conte G.G. Camajani; F. de Cadenas; Conde de Gaviria; Dr Artur Norton; Baron de Sao Roque; S. Kuczynski; M. M. Paszkiewicz; L. G. Pine; P. de V. B. Dewar; B. C. G. Brooks; and Professor W. Gordon East.

Book Synopsis Documenting Mobility in the Japanese Empire and Beyond by : Takahiro Yamamoto
Download or read book Documenting Mobility in the Japanese Empire and Beyond written by Takahiro Yamamoto and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-11-07 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book tackles the question of border control in and around imperial Japan in the first half of the twentieth century, with a specific focus on its documentation regime. It explores the institutional development, media and literary discourses, and on[1]the-ground practices of documentary identification in the Japanese empire and the places visited by its subjects. The contributing authors, covering such regions as Korea, Manchuria, Taiwan, Siberia, Australia, and the United States, place the question of individual identity in the eyes of the respective governments in dialogue with the global developments of the identification and mobility control practices. The chapters suggest the importance of focusing more than previously on the narrative of individual identification, not as a tool for creating nation states but as a tool for generating, strengthening, and maintaining asymmetrical relationships between people of different socioeconomic backgrounds who moved in and out of empires. This book joins the effort in the recent scholarship in migration history to highlight experiences of migrants beyond the transatlantic world, and that in East Asian history to investigate the space and connections beyond the boundaries of the nation states. By bringing together the analyses on the trans-Pacific mobility and Japan’s imperial expansion and its aftermath in East Asia, it shows a complex interplay between state power and moving individuals, two forces whose relationships went far beyond simple competition.
