Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Health psychology is an offer of help, an effort to "understand how biological, behavioral, and social factors influence health and illness. Although its claim of a share of health care territory was never loud, it has become one of the fast-growing sub-specialties; it has now outstripped other divisions of psychology in terms of excitement in the public eye. And yet a new occupation was built on somewhat unrealistic, idealized assumptions; the title of this book was therefore chosen to emphasize the fact that an extensive critique of those assumptions is missing. Consequently, there has never been a consensus as to what should be studied first, what to include in and what should be omitted from the health psychology syllabus. This book proposes arbitrary boundaries for a discourse on health psychology. The array of subjects is based on two major themes; the foundation of health psychology and the range of disorders where psychological knowledge might benefit the sick; and the question of whether or not health psychology has a systematic and pragmatic structure so as to qualify as a profession.

Book excerpt: "This important book provides a review of the Minnesota Model of alcoholism treatment, which combines current clinical treatments and the 12-step principles of Alcoholics Anonymous with the goal of abstinence. Using evidence from biosociobehavioural science and critical analyses of alcoholism treatment outcome literature, the book rebuts the view of cognitive behaviour therapists that alcoholism is nothing but a bad habit. This book fills a vital need, describing which alcoholism treatments work and which do not. It is an invaluable guide to the helping professions caring for alcoholics, alcoholism counsellors, social workers, nurses, clinical psychologists and psychiatrists as well as the intelligent layperson interested in alcoholism and its treatment." - - Back Cover.

Download or read book A Mother's Guide to Manhood written by Dalen Spratt and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2011-01-14 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The best teachers in life are those who have not only studied, but truly experienced the message that they are trying to relay. Whether it is religion, sports, or simple life lessons, your words and actions must be genuine. A wise man once said, You can't teach what you don't know, but if you do know, why not spread the knowledge. The words on these pages were written to inspire hope. They are not only meant for the multitude of people that don't believe a woman can raise a son into a successful man without the immediate help of a father, but as well as for the individuals who are proving that theory wrong every day. There is hope. Through faith, strength, dedication, and prayer a former school teacher turned pastor was able to successfully raise her son into a respectable, focused, and driven man. This story and its lessons highlight the ups and downs, the smiles and frowns, and the tears of joy and sorrow that are all a part of the tremendous journey that a mother and son embark on together through life's everlasting trials and tribulations.
