At first the Dutch with their superior technology seemed to offer a solution but the Dutch were so efficient they soon wanted to take control and run the whole country. The latest foreigners to arrival were the British, and among them was one with a name impossible to pronounce but he had learned to speak Siam. None of the other foreigners except for a few Jesuit priests had learned to speak Siamese. The King had his spies keep a close watch on this strange newcomer.

This revised and corrected translation of Zur Muhlen's memoir - with extensive notes and an essay on the author by Lionel Gossman - will appeal especially to readers interested in women's history, the Central European aristocratic world that came to an end with the First World War, and the culture and politics of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
