Book excerpt: A nineteenth-century family of Scottish aristocrats falls victim to a mysterious curse in this historical saga by the author of Riches—“A spellbinding read” (Booklist). Scotland, 1891. The aristocratic Fairbairn family have occupied Lochlee Castle in Argyllshire for the past five centuries. The current head of the family, the Earl of Rothbury, along with his wife, two sons, and nine daughters, all seem destined for a happy future. But on the day that his daughter Laura’s engagement is announced, Lord Rothbury receives an unsettling visit from a mysterious man who harbors a grudge—and a curse—for the Rothbury family. Soon it seems the whole family is doomed, with tragedy and heartbreak around every corner. As the years go on, the surviving Fairbairns attempt to show bravery in adversity. But will they ever escape the curse? “With an unusual plot full of unexpected twists and a graceful writing style, Parker’s latest is not only a spellbinding read but also an eye-opening look at the role of the aristocracy and women in Scotland at the turn of the nineteenth-to-twentieth century.” —Booklist

Book excerpt: 44 SCOTLAND STREET - Book 2 The residents and neighbors of 44 Scotland Street and the city of Edinburgh come to vivid life in these gently satirical, wonderfully perceptive serial novels, featuring six-year-old Bertie, a remarkably precocious boy—just ask his mother. Back are all our favorite denizens of a Georgian townhouse in Edinburgh. Bertie the immensely talented six year old is now enrolled in kindergarten, and much to his dismay, has been clad in pink overalls for his first day of class. Bruce has lost his job as a surveyor, and between admiring glances in the mirror, is contemplating becoming a wine merchant. Pat is embarking on a new life at Edinburgh University and perhaps on a new relationship, courtesy of Domenica, her witty and worldly-wise neighbor. McCall Smith has much in store for them as the brief spell of glorious summer sunshine gives way to fall a season cursed with more traditionally Scottish weather. Full of McCall Smith’s gentle humor and sympathy for his characters, Espresso Tales is also an affectionate portrait of a city and its people who, in the author’s own words, “make it one of the most vibrant and interesting places in the world.”

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the context of increasing division and segregation in cities across the world, along with pressing concerns around austerity, environmental degradation, homelessness, violence, and refugees, this book pursues a multidisciplinary approach to spatial justice in the city. Spatial justice has been central to urban theorists in various ways. Intimately connected to social justice, it is a term implicated in relations of power which concern the spatial distribution of resources, rights and materials. Arguably there can be no notion of social justice that is not spatial. Philippopoulos-Mihalopoulos has argued that spatial justice is the struggle of various bodies – human, natural, non-organic, technological – to occupy a certain space at a certain time. As such, urban planning and policy interventions are always, to some extent at least, about spatial justice. And, as cities become ever more unequal, it is crucial that urbanists address questions of spatial justice in the city. To this end, this book considers these questions from a range of disciplinary perspectives. Crossing law, sociology, history, cultural studies, and geography, the book’s overarching concern with how to think spatial justice in the city brings a fresh perspective to issues that have concerned urbanists for several decades. The inclusion of empirical work in London brings the political, social, and cultural aspects of spatial justice to life. The book will be of interest to academics and students in the field of urban studies, sociology, geography, planning, space law, and cultural studies.

Glasby. We also feature mysteries by N.M. Our novel is a classic corporate espionage tale from Francis Lynde. And, of course, we have a solve-it-yourself puzzler from Hal Charles. On the science fiction front, we have great tales from Nelson S. Bond, E.C. Tubb, and Philip E. High. Great stuff!
