Book Synopsis The Civilization of the Holocaust in Italy by : Wiley Feinstein
Download or read book The Civilization of the Holocaust in Italy written by Wiley Feinstein and published by Fairleigh Dickinson Univ Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book studies the persecution of Italian Jews during the Fascist period in relation to the Italian cultural tradition. It shows that Mussolini's anti-Semitic laws and Italian support for Hitler's war on the Jews stem directly from beliefs deeply embedded in Italian culture. After studying anti-Judaic characterizations in the Christian tradition and representations of Jews by Dante and other Medieval and Renaissance authors, the book shows how the anti-Semitic tradition became reinvigorated in the nineteenth century. cultural figures in the period between 1900 and 1940: the writer Giovanni Papini, the Catholic educational leader Agostino Gemelli, and the artist and critic Ardengo Soffici. The book then examines Mussolini's specific anti-Semitic policies and argues that the Italian cultural system contributed to generating the evil that led to the Holocaust. Wiley Feinstein is Associate Professor of Italian at Loyola University Chicago.
Download or read book Becoming Modern written by Carolyn Burke and published by Macmillan + ORM. This book was released on 1996-07-25 with total page 900 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The poet and visual artist Mina Loy has long had an underground reputation as an exemplary avant-gardist. Born in London of mixed Jewish and English parentage, and a much photographed beauty, she moved in the pivotal circles of international modernism—in Florence as Gertrude Stein's friend and Marinetti's lover; in New York as Marcel Duchamp's co-conspirator and Djuna Barnes's confidante; in Mexico with the greatest love, the notorious boxer-poet Arthur Cravan; in Paris with the Surrealists and Man Ray. Carolyn Burke's riveting, authoritative biography, Becoming Modern, brings this highly original and representative figure wonderfully alive, in the process giving us a new picture of modernism—and one woman's important contribution to it.

Book Synopsis Reading, Wanting, and Broken Economics by : Simon R. Frost
Download or read book Reading, Wanting, and Broken Economics written by Simon R. Frost and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2021-05-01 with total page 445 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Combining historical study, theorization, and experimental fiction, this book takes commodity culture and book retail around 1900 as the prime example of a market of symbolic goods. With the port of Southampton, England, as his case study, Simon R. Frost reveals how the city's bookshops, with their combinations of libraries, haberdashery, stationery, and books, sustained and were sustained by the dreams of ordinary readers, and how together they created the values powering this market. The goods in this market were symbolic and were not "consumed" but read. Their readings were created between other readers and texts, in happy disobedience to the neoliberal laws of the free market. Today such reader-created social markets comprise much of the world's branded economies, which is why Frost calls for a new understanding of both literary and market values.
