In 1915, the First World War raged across Western Europe. When the war broke out in the prior year, the nations involved in the conflict on the Western Front believed in a rapid victory. The reality turned out to be quite different. Instead of achieving any success, British, Commonwealth, French, and Belgian troops were facing German troops in brutal trench warfare in France and Belgium. Throughout the entirety of this type of warfare, neither side made any significant or lasting progress. Therefore, in 1915, British High Command came up with the plan of attacking the Ottoman Empire, Germany's ally in the east, and breaking through the Dardanelles strait to capture Constantinople. Alongside this, there was also the idea of aiding the Russian Empire by allowing supply shipments and thus possibly causing a relief on the Western Front. However, the Dardanelles campaign turned out to be one of the most fatal and costly military disasters throughout the history of the First World War.

This imperial experience of the Great War influenced European soldiers' ideas about the conflict, leading them to reimagine empires and their places with them and eventually reshaping imperial cultures. In Empire between the Lines Elizabeth Stice analyzes stories, poetry, plays, and cartoons in British and French trench newspapers to demonstrate how British and French soldiers experienced and envisioned empires through the war and the war through empire. By establishing the imperial context for European soldiers and exploring representations of colonial troops, depictions of non-European campaigns, and descriptions of the German enemy, Stice argues that while certain narratives from prewar imperial culture persisted, the experience of the war also created new, competing narratives about empire and colonized peoples. Empire between the Lines is the first study of its kind to consult British and French newspapers together, offering an innovative lens for viewing the public discourse of the trenches. By interrogating the relationship between British and French soldiers and empire during the war, Stice increases our understanding of the worldview of ordinary men in extraordinary times.

By the end of 1918, the AAMC was a radically different organisation. Using army orders, unit war diaries and memoranda written to disseminate information within the Australian Imperial Forces (AIF) and between British and Australian soldiers, it maps the provision of medical care through casualty clearance and evacuation, rehabilitation, and the prevention and treatment of venereal disease. In doing so, she reassesses Australian military medicine and maps the transition to an infrastructure for the AIF in the field, especially in response to conflicts with traditional imperial, military and medical hierarchies.
