Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book provides a new look at the everyday relationship between psychological processes and extraordinary aspects of ordinary phenomena. Why should we deal with ordinary things? People’s life is made of everyday practical, taken-for-granted things, such as driving a car, using money, listening music, etc. When you drive from home to workplace, you are migrating between contexts. Is this an empty space you are crossing, or the time you spend into the car is something meaningful? In psychological terms, things have, at least, three levels of existence, a material, a symbolic and an affective one. The underlying idea is that the symbolic elaboration of everyday things is characterized by the transcendence of the particular object-sign, leading to the creation of more and more complex sign fields. These fields expand according to an inclusive logic up to dialogically and dialectically incorporate opposites (i.e. clean/dirty, transparent/opaque, hide/ show, join/divide, slow/fast, etc.). Even the meaning of “ordinary” and “extraordinary” follow such an inclusive logic: if you give a positive value to ordinary, extraordinary is rule-breaking; otherwise, if ordinary means trivial, extraordinary assumes a positive value. Besides, things are cultural artifacts mediating the experience of the world, the psychological processes and the construction of mind. Reflecting upon “things” is thus a more meaningful pathway to understand Psyche.

At this point, I will not reveal to readers what constitutes metamodeling. Suf fice it to say that the pitfalls and shortcomings of modeling can be cured only if we resort to a higher level of inquiry called metainquiry and metadesign. We reach this level by the process of abstraction. The book contains five chapters from my previous work, Applied General Systems Theory (Harper and Row, London and New York, First Edition 1974, Second Edition 1978). More than ten years after its publication, this material still appears relevant to the main thrust of system design. This book is dedicated to all those who are involved in changing the world for the better. In a way we all are involved in system design: from the city manager who struggles with the problems of mass transportation or the consolidation of a city and its suburbs to the social worker who tries to provide benefits to the urban poor. It includes the engineer who designs the shuttle rockets. It involves the politician engaged in drafting a bill to recycle containers, or one to prevent pesticide contamination of our food. The politician might even need system design to chart his or her own re-election campaign.

Book excerpt: In a realm where history murmured through ancient ruins, a band of nine youthful explorers embarked on a quest that would test their courage, intellect, and camaraderie. Their adventure began in the heart of a bustling metropolis, where they formed a club dedicated to unearthing the mysteries that lay beneath the surface. One fateful day, they stumbled upon a long-forgotten chart, a relic from a bygone era. Nestled in the depths of a venerable library, its intricate details and faded ink promised secrets yearning to be unveiled. Zanny, a whirlwind of curiosity, was the first to spot it, igniting a spark of excitement that spread through the group. At that moment, they fell silent, each lost in their own thoughts as if the map, with its faded ink and enigmatic symbols, had cast a spell over them. It was a call to adventure, a promise of secrets waiting to be uncovered. As the afternoon sun began its descent, casting long shadows across the library floor, they knew they couldn’t resist the allure of the unknown. The map had revealed its final destination: a perilous mountain pass, shrouded in legend and cloaked in perpetual snow. Its peak, a jagged tooth against the sky, was said to be the gateway to the lost city of Eldoria. The group finally left the library and soon arrived at its base, a contrasting crew of adventurers, their hearts pounding with hope and trepidation as they gazed up in amazement at what awaited them high above. What would happen next to these intrepid adventurers? Would they succeed in their quest? With another chart as their guide, they later ventured into the labyrinthine streets of the city, their hearts pounding with anticipation. They discovered hidden passageways, ancient tunnels, and forgotten landmarks, each offering a glimpse into the city’s rich heritage. Along the way, they faced challenges both physical and mental. They navigated treacherous terrain, deciphered cryptic clues, and even encountered rival explorers vying for the same secrets. But their friendship and unwavering determination proved to be their greatest assets. As they delved deeper into the city’s underbelly, they uncovered a world of forgotten treasures and ancient knowledge. They encountered mysterious guardians, solved age-old riddles, and witnessed the breathtaking beauty of hidden wonders. Their journey was not without its risks. They faced danger, uncertainty, and the ever-present threat of the unknown. But their courage and resilience shone through, propelling them forward on their quest. In the end, their adventure was more than just a treasure hunt. It was a journey of self-discovery, a testament to the power of friendship, and a celebration of the city’s rich heritage. As they stood at the end of their quest, having uncovered the secrets of the ancient chart, they realised that the real treasure was not Eldoria’s glory or the hidden tunnels conquered, but the bonds they had forged and the memories they had created, as well as the journey itself.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the shadowy recesses of an attic, where the sun’s rays play hide and seek with the dust of ages, resides a rat of remarkable repute. His name is Budda Brie—a moniker that echoes with the charisma of a fabled hero. “A Good Rat” by Dandy Ahuruonye is a whimsical and enchanting tale that transports readers into a world where the ordinary becomes extraordinary, and the mundane is infused with magic and wonder. Introduction Dandy Ahuruonye’s “A Good Rat” is a delightful narrative that blends fantasy with a touch of reality, creating a story that is both captivating and thought-provoking. The protagonist, Budda Brie, is no ordinary rodent. He is a Groccolli robot, a marvel of whiskered engineering, whose existence defies the mundane laws of rat-dom. With fur as grey as twilight shadows and eyes that sparkle like digital constellations, Budda Brie is a character that leaps off the page and into the reader’s imagination. Review The story unfolds in an ancient attic, a setting that Ahuruonye describes with such vivid detail that one can almost feel the dust motes pirouetting in the slanting sunbeams. This attic is not just a backdrop but a character in itself, filled with forgotten treasures and secrets waiting to be uncovered. It is here that Budda Brie embarks on his adventures, accompanied by his confidant, Giggles McWhisker—a mouse with a penchant for puns and a tail that twitches like a Morse code machine. One of the most memorable aspects of “A Good Rat” is Ahuruonye’s masterful use of language. His prose is rich and lyrical, painting pictures with words that linger in the mind long after the book is closed. For instance, when describing Budda Brie’s love for cheese, Ahuruonye writes: “Budda Brie didn’t nibble; he savoured. Each morsel was a symphony of flavour, a sonnet composed by dairy deities.” Such lines not only add depth to the character but also immerse the reader in the sensory experiences of the story. The relationship between Budda Brie and Giggles McWhisker is another highlight of the book. Their conversations crackle with wit and whimsy, providing both humour and insight. They discuss everything from the weather (“mostly cloudy with a chance of cheese showers”) to philosophy (“whether the moon was made of Gouda or Swiss”), and their banter is a joy to read. Through their interactions, Ahuruonye explores themes of friendship, empathy, and self-awareness, making the story not just entertaining but also meaningful. The plot of “A Good Rat” is filled with delightful escapades and conflicts. One particularly amusing episode is the Cheese Heist Hullabaloo, where the cheddar wedge accuses the brie wheel of favouritism. “You’re always the toast of the party,” grumbles the cheddar, to which the brie retorts, “Well, you’re too sharp for your good.” Such exchanges are peppered throughout the book, adding a layer of humour that will appeal to readers of all ages. But “A Good Rat” is not just about light-hearted fun. It also delves into deeper themes, such as the importance of forgiveness and understanding. In one poignant scene, the old cuckoo clock apologises to the broken teacup, and the moth forgives the spider for stealing its silk. These moments of reconciliation and empathy are beautifully woven into the narrative, making the story resonate on an emotional level. In conclusion, “A Good Rat” by Dandy Ahuruonye is a charming and enchanting tale that will captivate readers with its rich prose, memorable characters, and thought-provoking themes. It is a book that celebrates the magic in the mundane and reminds us of the importance of friendship, empathy, and self-awareness. Whether you are a child or an adult, this story will leave you with a smile on your face and a warmth in your heart. As Budda Brie himself might say, "Emotions are akin to the array of cheeses. Some are sharp, slicing through indifference; others are mellow, soothing the palate of the soul."

Book excerpt: 🎉 Introducing the children's wonder: “Dandy Ahuruonye’s CHEEKY PERIWINKLES!” 🎉 Gather 'round, dear parents and guardians, for a literary treat that will have your children giggling and guffawing from cover to cover! Dandy Ahuruonye’s “CHEEKY PERIWINKLES” is a delightful romp through a world where the slow and steady truly win the race, and every page is brimming with slime, wit, and whimsy. You're probably wondering - Why should I add this gem to my child’s bookshelf? Let me regale you with the reasons! Hilarious Hijinks: This book is a laugh-out-loud adventure featuring the cheekiest periwinkles, slugs, and snails you’ll ever meet. Imagine a world where slugs rule the roost and time moves slower than a snail on holiday. “It was slug days, and time dragged on as everyone found themselves in the leafy embrace of an island isolated amidst the vast and whispering ocean.” The humour is as zesty as a lemon tart, making it a joy for both kids and parents alike. Charming Characters: Each character is more endearing than the last. From Old Whiskers, who paints sunsets on his shell, to the periwinkles teaching snails to dance a jig, every creature is bursting with personality. “In the land of the slowpokes, being fast is about as important as a knitted swimsuit,” and that’s just the beginning of the fun! Life Lessons with a Twist: Beneath the humour lies a treasure trove of life lessons. The story teaches children the value of patience, the beauty of taking things slow, and the importance of being oneself. “Every tiny slide forward is a big win,” and this book celebrates those small victories in the most delightful way. Perfect for All Ages: The witty banter and playful prose make this book a hit with readers of all ages. Mums and dads will find themselves sniggering right along with their sprogs, as the gentle rhymes and twinkling chuckles are as ageless as the constellations dozing above our beds at night. So, don your wellies and prepare for a trek through the squelchy lives of periwinkles, slugs, and snails. “Dandy Ahuruonye’s CHEEKY PERIWINKLES” is a saga that wiggles and waggles between the serious and the silly, spinning tales that stretch from the seabed to the sunny skies of make-believe. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 100 EXTRAORDINARY STORIES ABOUT ORDINARY THINGS SIGNIFICANT OBJECTS: A Literary and Economic Experiment Can a great story transform a worthless trinket into a significant object? The Significant Objects project set out to answer that question once and for all, by recruiting a highly impressive crew of creative writers to invent stories about an unimpressive menagerie of items rescued from thrift stores and yard sales. That secondhand flotsam definitely becomes more valuable: sold on eBay, objects originally picked up for a buck or so sold for thousands of dollars in total — making the project a sensation in the literary blogosphere along the way. But something else happened, too: The stories created were astonishing, a cavalcade of surprising responses to the challenge of manufacturing significance. Who would have believed that random junk could inspire so much imagination? The founders of the Significant Objects project, that’s who. This book collects 100 of the finest tales from this unprecedented creative experiment; you’ll never look at a thrift-store curiosity the same way again. Drawing on his extensive research and personal experience as a scholar and climber, Edwin Bernbaum's Sacred Mountains of the World takes the reader on a fascinating journey exploring the role of mountains in the mythologies, religions, history, literature, and art of cultures around the world.
