Book excerpt: Response Surfaces: Designs and Analyses; Second Edition presents techniques for designing experiments that yield adequate and reliable measurements of one or several responses of interest, fitting and testing the suitability of empirical models used for acquiring information from the experiments, and for utilizing the experimental results to make decisions concerning the system under investigation. This edition contains chapters on response surface models with block effects and on Taguchi's robust parameter design, additional details on transformation of response variable, more material on modified ridge analysis, and new design criteria, including rotatability for multiresponse experiments. It also presents an innovative technique for displaying correlation among several response. Numerical examples throughout the book plus exercises--with worked solutions to selected problems--complement the text.

Book excerpt: Although widely used in science and technology for experimental data generating, modeling, and optimization, the response surface methodology (RSM) has many limitations. Showing how robust response surface methodology (RRSM) can overcome these limitations, Robust Response Surfaces, Regression, and Positive Data Analyses presents RRS designs, along with the relevant regression and positive data analysis techniques. It explains how to use RRSM in experimental designs and regression analysis. The book addresses problems of RRS designs, such as rotatability, slope-rotatability, weak rotatability, and optimality. It describes methods for estimating model parameters as well as positive data analysis techniques. The author illustrates the concepts and methods with real examples of lifetime responses, resistivity, replicated measures, and more. The range of topics and applications gives the book broad appeal both to theoreticians and practicing professionals. The book helps quality engineers, scientists in any area, medical practitioners, demographers, economists, and statisticians understand the theory and applications of RRSM. It can also be used in a second course on the design of experiments.

Book excerpt: This thesis takes an empirical approach to understanding of the behavior and interactions between the two main components of reinforcement learning: the learning algorithm and the functional representation of learned knowledge. The author approaches these entities using design of experiments not commonly employed to study machine learning methods. The results outlined in this work provide insight as to what enables and what has an effect on successful reinforcement learning implementations so that this learning method can be applied to more challenging problems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biological Monitoring of Marine Pollutants presents the proceedings of a symposium on ""Pollution and Physiology of Marine Organisms"" held in Milford, Connecticut, on November 7-9, 1980. It looks at the physiological effects of pollutants, such as synthetic organic compounds, petroleum hydrocarbons, and heavy metals, on marine organisms ranging from fishes and shrimps to barnacles, crabs, mussels, polychaetes, and microalgae. Comprised of four sections encompassing 22 chapters, this volume begins with an overview of the effects of synthetic organics, such as pesticides on marine organisms like the mysid shrimps Mysidopsis bahia. It proceeds with a discussion of the toxic effects of several chlorophenols on the grass shrimp, Palaemonetes pugio; how heavy metals, including silver, copper, cadmium, zinc, and mercury, affect species such as the polychaete Neanthes virens and the caridean shrimp Palaemonetes pugio; monitoring of water quality based on the biochemical and physiological responses of marine organisms to pollutants; and the effects of monocyclic aromatic hydrocarbons on fishes from an ecological standpoint. Marine scientists, ecologists, and students will find this book extremely useful.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experimental gerontopsychology attempts to test causal hypotheses about old age-related behavioral changes by the manipulation of age-differences. An experimental treatment is introduced with the purpose of equating different age-groups with respect to a potentially relevant function. If the treatment results in an assimilation of the behavior of the different age-groups (age by-treatment interaction), differences in this function are con sidered as causal for the normally observed behavioral differ ence. If it does not result in an assimilation of the behavior of the different age-groups (main effect of treatment), differ ences in this function are considered as irrelevant for the nor mally observed behavioral difference. The different interpretations of age-by-treatment interactions and main effects of treatment in this kind of research are reasonable only if the experimental treatment actually results in an equalization of the age-groups with respect to the func tion of interest. As is shown, such a functional equalization can neither be demonstrated nor assumed in many cases. In such cases, studies with either age-group can be used to investigate hypotheses about potential causes for old age-related behavioral changes, studies with young subjects having important advantages over studies with old subjects. A test of causal relationships by age-by-treatment interactions is possible in cases where the experimental treatment evidently results in an equalization of the age groups with respect to the function in question. Unfortunately, the field of application for this kind of approach is rather limited.

In contrast, this book delivers a practice-oriented, general guiding theory valid for all methods and techniques. The metrological foundations included define strictly the figures of merit in order to minimize confusions still appearing in Analytical Chemistry publications today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Environmental engineers work to increase the level of health and happiness in the world by designing, building, and operating processes and systems for water treatment, water pollution control, air pollution control, and solid waste management. These projects compete for resources with projects in medicine, transportation, education, and other fields that have a similar objective. The challenge is to make the investments efficient – to get the best project outputs with a minimum of inputs. Cost Engineering for Pollution Prevention and Control examines how to identify the best solution by judging alternatives with respect to some measure of system performance, such as total capital cost, annual cost, annual net profit, return on investment, cost-benefit ratio, net present worth, minimum production time, maximum production rate, minimum energy utilization, and so on. Key Features: Explains how to estimate preliminary costs, how to compare the life cycle costs of alternative projects, how to find the optimal balance between capital costs and operating costs. Emphasis is placed on formulating the problem rather than on the mathematical details of how the calculations are done. Provides numerous practical examples and case studies. Includes end-of-chapter exercises dealing with water, wastewater, air pollution, solid wastes, and remediation projects. The important concepts presented in this book can be understood by those students who have taken an introductory course in environmental engineering. Advanced knowledge of process design is not required. The material can also be utilized by engineers, managers, and others who would benefit from a better understanding of how engineers look at problems.
