Book excerpt: This book presents a set of basic understandings of the behavior and response of solids to propagating shock waves. The propagation of shock waves in a solid body is accompanied by large compressions, decompression, and shear. Thus, the shear strength of solids and any inelastic response due to shock wave propagation is of the utmost importance. Furthermore, shock compres sion of solids is always accompanied by heating, and the rise of local tempera ture which may be due to both compression and dissipation. For many solids, under a certain range of impact pressures, a two-wave structure arises such that the first wave, called the elastic prescursor, travels with the speed of sound; and the second wave, called a plastic shock wave, travels at a slower speed. Shock-wave loading of solids is normally accomplished by either projectile impact, such as produced by guns or by explosives. The shock heating and compression of solids covers a wide range of temperatures and densities. For example, the temperature may be as high as a few electron volts (1 eV = 11,500 K) for very strong shocks and the densification may be as high as four times the normal density.

Book excerpt: The primary aim of this monograph is to present the current knowledge of brittle properties of rocks as determined in laboratory experiments. The principal aspects of brittle behavior are described with special attention to the fundamental physical aspects. Thus, the book provides a useful introduction to the basics of rock properties for engineering and earth science applications. Furthermore, it serves as a guide for graduate students and non specialists by presenting the relevant background material and where it can be found. For the new edition a further chapter has been added, and almost half of the chapters have been extensively revised and the others updated.

Of primary importance are those through which criteria predicting material failure by deformation and/or fracture are investigated. Since the demands of engineering application always precede the development of theories, there is another kind of experiment where conditions under which a particular material can fail are simulated as closely as possible to the operational situation but in a simplified and standardized form. In this way, many of the parameters corresponding to fracture such as toughness, Charpy values, crack opening distance (COD), etc. are measured. Obviously, a sound knowledge of the physical theories governing material failure is necessary as the quantity of interest can seldom be evaluated in a direct manner. Critical stress intensity factors and critical energy release rates are examples. Standard test of materials should be distinguished from basic experi ments. They are performed to provide routine information on materials responding to certain conditions of loading or environment. The tension test with or without a crack is among one of the most widely used tests. Because they affect the results, with size and shape of the specimen, the rate of loading, temperature and crack configuration are standardized to enable comparison and reproducibility of results. The American Society for Testing Materials (ASTM) provides a great deal of information on recommended procedures and methods of testing. The objective is to standardize specifications for materials and definition of technical terms.

Book excerpt: Interpretive studies based on available information of the low-stress brittle fracture behavior of mild steel are made to suggest additional guides for the evaluation of the fracture resistance of fabricated steel structures. An experimental investigation was conducted to investigate the influence of welding on the yield behavior of metal from the thermally affected zone in the vicinity of a weld. The study suggests that low-stress cleavage initiation at service temperatures can be associated with a marked local reduction of critical fracture stress, that residual stresses can be responsible for the propagation through sound metal of fractures initiated in damaged material, and that the critical fracture stress and fracture mechanics approaches are equivalent when applied to cleavage propagation and arrest. This book was released on 1975 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two studies are included. In the first study, a theory of static fatigue in brittle solids is derived, based on the ideas of Hillig and Charles, but using a different log reaction velocity-stress relationship. The resulting equation agrees well with the functional dependence of failure time on stress found experimentally, and experimental values of the stress-sensitivity factor are consistent with the theory. Variations in failure times with sample history and glass composition can only partly be explained by the theory. In the second study, energies of cracks are considered in terms of the first and second laws of thermodynamics, and it is concluded that the Griffith criterion provides a necessary but not sufficient condition for crack propagation. Thus surface energies calculated from fracture experiments give only an upper bound to the true surface energies of solids. The correct criterion for fracture is Inglis' equation for the stress at the tip of a crack; the radius of the crack tip is a parameter that cannot be ignored in fracture experiments.
