Book excerpt: At-risk African-American students face a number of difficulties at predominately White colleges and universities. The experiences of these students are rarely acknowledged. In order to understand this population's full experience the question of interest is "What is the experience of success for at-risk African-American students in higher education?" The heuristic model of qualitative research was used to examine the experience of twelve co-researchers ranging in ages from 27-62 years, who identified as being at-risk during their academic careers and that have attended a predominately White college or university. Seven themes and two sub themes were discovered during the examination of the co-researchers interviews. Themes included; 1) feelings of inadequacy at a predominately White university, 2) determined to complete college degree despite obstacles, 3) feeling prepared for career and future 4) importance of being first generation graduates, 5) joining supportive/mentoring organizations on campus, 6) graduation most rewarding experience in college, 6) meaning of success, a) achieving goals, and b) living with a sense of comfort. The findings reveal the difficulties and issues of at-risk African-American students at predominately White institutions. Those that will benefit from this research study are educators, psychologists, school counselors, social justice advocators, and others who seek to enhance their understanding of the experience of success for at-risk African-American students in higher education at a predominately White colleges or Universities.

This vulnerability may be exacerbated when educators fail to recognize the relationship between the life experiences of African American students and their academic performance and college success. African American students are challenged further as they attempt to successfully adjust to collegiate environments which often do not validate them or their experiences. The primary purpose of this study is to investigate this challenge with selected African American students, to learn about how the life experiences of African American students can enhance their success in higher education. A secondary purpose is to learn how these students develop their sense of resiliency and how they think this knowledge can be utilized to promote their own greater self-efficacy and trust. Therefore, the overall purpose is to engage selected students in the development of grounded theory about how educators can learn from African American students about their perceptions of the connections between life experiences and success in higher education. This research is qualitative in nature and based on grounded theory methodology, which allows theory to emerge from subject participation: the theory that emerged was generated specifically from the input of the eight African American student interviewees. The information derived from this study may encourage a more creative approach to educational practices in the future, based in part on specific contributions from African American students. This study confirms that including students in the ongoing dialogue about schooling can be a powerful way to help them examine the ideological nature of their experiences by reflecting on them in a constructively critical manner. The major implication is if the interrelatedness between students' life experiences and academic success were understood more clearly, educators could become more open to enjoying an educational setting in which both students and teachers learn from one another--a setting that better fulfills the fundamental educational goal of preparing students to be successful.

Book excerpt: Abstract: There are a number of African American students attending public schools situated within lower income communities who achieve academic success, despite encountering various challenges. The purpose of this qualitative study was to gain insight into the internal and external protective factors that served to mitigate risk in the lives of academically resilient African American students. Moreover, an examination of the process by which these students achieved academic success despite factors that typically place students "at-risk" or "educationally vulnerable" for academic failure was the goal of this research inquiry. Twenty-one graduating seniors across four high schools were interviewed as part of this phenomenological research investigation. Several themes emerged that supported existing literature on academic resilience and African American students. All participants discussed the impact of both internal and external protective factors across home, schools, and communities that led to academic success. In addition, the majority of respondents reported that in their respective schools, education was valued, responsibilities were often shared among others, and positive and supportive relationships were encouraged across students, teachers, and school staff. Furthermore, participants discussed the process of being resilient, specifically encountering various challenges, but working to achieve their academic goals.

Underlying the process is an intersectional and identity-conscious, rather than identity-centered, framework that addresses the complexity of students’ assets and needs as they encounter the unfamiliar terrain of college.In the current landscape of higher education, colleges and universities normally divide their efforts between departments and programs that explicitly work on developing students’ identities and separate departments or programs that work on retaining and graduating higher-risk students. This book contends that the gap between cultural/diversity centers and institutional retention efforts is both a missed opportunity and one that perpetuates the opportunity gap between students of color and low-income students and their peers.Identity-consciousness, the central framework of this book, differs from an identity-centric approach where the identity itself is the focus of the intervention. For example, a Latino men’s program can be developed as an identity-centered initiative if the outcomes of the program are all tied to a deeper or more complex understanding of one’s Latino-ness and/or masculinity.
