Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Exodus and the Wanderings in the Wilderness It need scarcely be said, that in studying this narrative 015571 Bible slzoula' always be at hand. But I may remind my self and others, that the only real understanding Of any portion of Holy Scripture is that conveyed to the heart by the Spirit of God. And, indeed, throughout, my great object has been, not to supersede the constant and prayerful use Of the Bible itself, but rather to lead to those Scriptures, which alone are able to make wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. Book excerpt: Alfred Edersheim's classic commentary on the Biblical Book of Exodus is admired for its fluency of explanation, and for the author's immense knowledge of Old Testament lore. Exodus, the second book of the Old Testament, is renowned for its telling of how the ancient Hebrews departed from the Kingdom of the Egyptians. Egypt at the time was ruled by the Pharaoh, a proud and domineering ruler who oppressed those who believed in the one, true God. The manner in which God treated His peoples, showing them a path away from the misery of Pharaoh's rule, and unleashing a series of misfortunes upon the Pharaoh and the Egyptian citizens, form some of the Bible's most memorable passages. Edersheim's narrative is not simply an explanatory reading of the Biblical text; it also delves into the history of Egypt, as discovered by archaeologists and chroniclers of its ancient past. The referencing of multiple and varied sources enhances the commentary, making it useful for students of theology and lay believers alike. The author served as a minister in England; through effort and voracity he became a leading scholar and authority upon the Bible in the 19th century, his books frequently consulted by the Christian priesthood and adherents.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Desert of the Exodus: Journeys on Foot in the Wilderness of the Forty Years Wanderings; Undertaken in Connexion With the Ordnance Survey of Sinai, and the Palestine Exploration Fund Many travellers have crossed the desert to the Holy Land, but no one has hitherto attempted a complete exploration of the Desert of the Exodus, so as to give an exhaustive account of the scenes of Israel's Wanderings. The notices which we have of the Wilderness south of Palestine are so scattered and partial as to be of little service in determining the Scriptural topography of these regions. Having accompanied the Ordnance Survey Expedition to the Peninsula of Sinai in 1868-1869, and subsequently visited Et Tih, Idumaea and Moab on behalf of the Palestine Exploration Fund in 1869-1870, I have wandered over a greater portion of this extensive desert than had been ever previously explored. The results of these journeys, performed entirely on foot and extending over a period of eleven months, I now lay before the reader. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Exodus: A Commentary God led Israel through the desert between Egypt and Palestine. They in fact form a link between the Exodus and the Entry into the Promised Land. These narratives comprise a loose juxtaposition of episodes from nomadic life in the wilderness, a life whose character istic features were still at a later date familiar to the tribes of Israel, bounded as they were by the desert. But this theme does not serve merely to give a graphic description of a particular period in the pre history Of Israel; behind it stands the tenet Of Israelite faith that it was in fact 'in the wilderness' that Yahweh had shown his concern for Israel (cf. Hos. Jer. The theme of the wanderings appears once again in the Book Of Numbers. If we look at the Penta teuch as a whole, it forms a frame round the Sinai theme and in its turn is framed by the two matching themes of the Exodus from Egypt and the Entry into the Promised Land. Thus, although there is at first sight a bewildering abundance of such different individual narratives, the Pentateuchal traditions have been arranged under a clear pattern which holds this unusual work together and makes it clear that the individual books - and among them Exodus - are just members of a greater whole. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taking a pioneering approach to commentary writing, Brevard Childs gives an entirely original treatment to the book of Exodus. Apart from the philological notes and translation, this commentary includes a form-critical section, looking at the growth of the tradition in its previous stages; a consideration of the meaning of the text in its present form; and a consideration of its meaning in its total Old Testament context. The Old Testament Library provides fresh and authoritative treatments of important aspects of Old Testament study through commentaries and general surveys. The contributors are scholars of international standing.
