This book was released on 1970 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The problem of an electromagnetic wave obliquely incident upon a plasma slab is considered as a boundary-value problem by use of a self-consistent solution of the coupled linearized Vlasov and Maxwell equations. Power reflection, transmission, and absorption coefficients are derived under the assumption that all particles undergo specular reflection at the surfaces of the plasma slab. Although the analysis is valid for arbitrary slab thickness, computational results are presented for slabs which are thin when compared with a wavelength. The results show that a series of resonances occur which are attributed to the finite temperature of the plasma. The results further show that the resonances are Landau damped as the thermal velocity of the plasma electrons increases. It is shown that similar resonances can be predicted from the coupled linearized hydrodynamic Maxwell equations; however, as is well known, such a model does not predict Landau damping. The effects of a finite collision frequency are then included by means of a simple Bhatnagar-Gross-Krook (BGK) collision term. The numerical computations vividly indicate that the resonances undergo severe damping for extremely small ratios of the collision frequency to the signal frequency. Finally, the plasma capacitor problem is considered, and the results indicate that the longitudinal resonances have characteristics very similar to those of the plane-wave resonances.

Book excerpt: When an anisotropic plasma is bounded by conducting plane, a trapped surface wave can exist which propagates in a direction perpendicular to the dc magnetic field. When the plasma slab of finite thickness is placed over a conducting plane and excited by a magnetic line source which is in parallel with the dc magnetic field, this surface wave produces unidirectional leaky-wave pole, and in a certain frequency range this leaky wave pole is very close to a saddle point. The radiation pattern which results from the saddle point evaluation has a very sharp peak and the angle of this main beam can be varied as the dc magnetic field or plasma frequency are varied. It is also interesting to note that this sharp beam exists even when a plasma is opaque. In fact a considerable amount of energy transmission through the opaque plasma is possible due to the effect of this particular leaky wave mode. (Author).
