Book excerpt: The remarkable monastery of Helfta was a 'place where learning and art, courtesy and holiness flowered in a dark season' of interregnal warfare.* The nuns drew their inspiration from the twin roots of Citeaux: the Rule of Saint Benedict and the constitutions of Citeaux; their spirituality, liturgy, customs, and habits were modelled on those of the White Monks, even though juridically they were not part of the Cistercian Order. Under the guidance of the thirteenth-century abbess Gertrud of Hackeborn, the nuns of Helfta steadfastly pursued learning and holiness. Among them were three outstanding women whose works have come down through the centuries: Mechtilde of Hackeborn, Mechtilde of Magdeburg, and the scholarly Gertrud the Great. Having entered monastic life at the age of five, Gertrud combined a deep knowledge of the Church Fathers and earlier medieval writers, an intimate familiarity with Scripture, and innate common sense. Her Spiritual Exercises—prayers, litanies, meditations, and hymns—articulate a spirituality that is both traditionally monastic and authentically, but unself-consciously, feminine. Hers is a mysticism of light and love, of humility and commitment, of freedom and discipline and—most of all—of joy. *M. Book excerpt: This little volume may be regarded as a Supplement to the Prayers of St. Gertrude (and St. Mechtilde). The list of the devoted admirers of these writings would be long and imposing. We might place at its head the name of the seraphic St. Teresa, who, we are told by Father Bibera, her confessor, had taken St. Gertrude as her mistress and guide. Louis of Blois Bpeaks of her, in his Monile Spitiuale, in terms of rapturous enthusiasm. Ianspergius, as we have already seen, translated the documents which contain the revelations and teachings of the Saint into Latin. 8t. Francis of Sales never speaks of her but with devout admiration. Cornelius a Lapide, in his commentaries on the holy Scriptures, calls her a consummate mistress of the meaning of the Holy Spirit. It would be easy to carry on this list through several pages; we will close it with the judgment of the holy and wise M. Olier, as we find it in his unpublished works: "St. Gertrude," says that man of God, "by reason of her simplicity and profound humility, induced our Lord to treat -her in a manner altogether singular, and to enrich .her with his best gifts. Her writings tend always to unite the soul to Jesus Christ, and differ in this respect from many works of contemplation, which rather withdraw the soul from its application to the holy Humanity of our Lord." The pious and learned Father Faber has brought out, with bis characteristic sagacity, the advantages of that form of spirituality which gives the soul breadth and liberty, and so produces in many persons effects which some modem methods fail of producing: "No one," says he, "can be at all acquainted with the old-fashioned Benedictine school of spiritual writers, without perceiving and admiring the beautiful liberty of spirit which pervades and possesses their whole mind. It is just what we should expect from an order of such matured traditions. St. Gertrude is a fair specimen of them. She is thoroughly Benedictine. A spirit of breadth, a spirit of liberty that is the Catbolie spirit; and it was eminently the badge of the old Benedictine ascetics. Modem writers for the most part have tightened things, and have lost by it instead of gaining. By frightening people, they have lessened devotion in extent; and by overstraining it, they have lowered it in degree." (All for Jesus)

Excerpt from book: for was perfectly just. Alexander understood it to be so; but around him, and in the inferior offices of state, prejudices existed, ambition, and rivalries of sect or of worship, which were opposed to this act of emancipation. Some declared the Greek religion to be endangered; others demonstrated that very soon the Jesuits would take possession of every branch of public administration; and all agreed in saying that the Jesuits abused the liberty allowed them to supersede all the other teaching corporations. It appeared almost an impossibility to the children of Loyola that they p' should obtain what they asked for, when Count Joseph de Maistre threw himself into the dispute with his cutting eloquence and his reasoning, which went always straight to its aim, without regarding any obstacles. Count de Maistre was rather a great writer and bold thinker than a diplomatist. There was in his mind and heart a superabundance of life, such a complete devotion to the opinion which appeared to him to be truth revealed or demonstrated by reason, that he carried it triumphantly as far as it is permitted to human weakness. The half measures of party spirit, the delays of consideration, the difficulties of time and place, nothing could obstruct the rising sap of his genius, overflowing every subject he touched upon, and leaving on each its living impress. Possessed with a love of the true, the good, and the just, but perhaps not sufficiently distrusting his own cutting irony, his own originality, and his passion for polemics, Joseph de Maistre had obtained at St. Petersburg a position as new as it was decided. An ardent Catholic, he had known how to create for himself, among the schismatic Greeks, friends who honoured his faith, who esteemed his private virtues, and who were proud of his geniu...

Book excerpt: This book examines how the writings of the thirteenth-century nun Gertrude the Great of Helfta articulate an innovative relationship between a person's eucharistic devotion and her body. It attends to her references to the biblical, monastic, and theological traditions, including attitudes and ideas about the spiritual and corporeal senses, in order to illuminate the affirmative role Gertrude assigns to the body in making spiritual progress. Ultimately the book demonstrates that Gertrude leaves behind the dualistic aspect of the Christian intellectual and devotional tradition while exploiting its affirmative concepts of bodily forms of knowing divine union.

It contains spiritual reflections on the Rosary, its significance, how to pray it most effectively, and many narratives of miracles that worked for those who prayed it. The book attempts to deliver the message that Rosary is the most focused and preferred devotion to Mary, the mother of Jesus. It describes the historical and spiritual significance of the Holy Rosary and examines the meaning behind the prayers, Our Father, Hail Mary, and Glory Be. In addition, Montfort did a marvelous job providing helpful tips on avoiding distraction and faithfully praying the Rosary every day. This well-structured work is a concise, straightforward, yet inspiring read for anyone who wants to find their spiritual path. It consists of short sections called Roses. Each Rose discusses a different viewpoint about the Rosary and is somewhat addressed to a diverse group of the audience like priests or ordinary people. It's a perfect read for anyone who wants to know about the Rosary, whether for religious purpose or out of curiosity. Catholics worldwide have read the book for over two centuries, and it's still an excellent spiritual resource.
