Download or read book Changing Academia Forever written by Kitty Kelly Epstein and published by Myers Education Press. This book was released on 2020-01-31 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most effective and long-lasting student strike in U.S. History took place at San Francisco State College in 1968. The first Black Student Union, the first Black Studies Department, the only College of Ethnic Studies, and the admission of thousands of students of color resulted from this four-and-a-half-month strike which shut down 80% of the campus. It has been called the movement which “changed academia forever.” Black students were only a small percentage of those on campus, but they managed to engage thousands of white, Latino, Asian, and indigenous students; SDS and the Third World Liberation Front; the faculty union; and a huge portion of the San Francisco Community. In the end, they were able to win most of their 15 demands. The book is written by two participants in the strike, one a member of the BSU leadership. Oral histories of strike leaders are integrated with discussion of the events and significance of this movement. What were the politics and strategies? Why was the strike successful and what are the insights for today’s mass movements? Perfect for courses such as: Introduction to Black Studies | Introduction to Ethnic Studies | Recent U.S. History | Protest Movements | Higher Education | Urban Education | Multicultural Education | History of Education | Philosophy of Education | Oral History | Qualitative Methods | African-American History | African-American Education | African-American Politics
Book Synopsis Tales from Tennessee Lawyers by : William Lynwood Montell
Download or read book Tales from Tennessee Lawyers written by William Lynwood Montell and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2005-10-07 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Perhaps no one has keener insight into human nature than the small-town trial lawyer. All but lost in an era of corporate law firms and specialized practice, this charismatic figure was once at the political center of a community and was the holder of its many secrets. A small town attorney's only specialization was the town itself. Serving as both defender and accuser, these lawyers witnessed communities and individuals at their best and worst. Men and women of the legal profession often exert influence in seemingly small realms, but they play an important role in the lives of many people and help shape the American legal system. Veteran oral historian and folklorist William Lynwood Montell has brought together a fascinating collection of tales gathered from lawyers and judges throughout the Volunteer State. Montell searched small towns and cities across Tennessee for the law's older and middle age practitioners, and he shares the wealth of their experience in Tales from Tennessee Lawyers. These stories are recorded exactly as told by the lawyers themselves, and they reveal candid and unusual snapshots of the legal system -- both past and present. With a tape recorder and an ear for detail, Montell uncovers events and lives ranging from the commonplace to the extraordinary. A man resorts to prostitution to alleviate the debt brought about by divorce proceedings. Identical twins are tried for a string of murders. A convict flees his trial by stealing the judge's car. A prosecutor tries the nation's first school-shooting case. Judge George Balitsaris, a former University of Tennessee football player, escorts a special prosecutor out of a notorious rape trial as a precaution after the defendant's family issues threats. These and similar stories illustrate the strange, complex cases argued daily from Tennessee's largest cities to its smallest towns. Far more than just a collection of lawyer jokes, these recollections shed light on the tense and often dangerous lives of those who work to see that all receive fair representation and treatment in court.

Book Synopsis Children of the Changing South by : Foster Dickson
Download or read book Children of the Changing South written by Foster Dickson and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2011-11-16 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although much attention has been paid to the adults who led, participated in, or witnessed the civil rights movement, much less attention has been given to those who were children during that era. Especially in the South, these children of the 1950s and afterward came of age in the midst of major societal shifts regarding race, gender, social class, and industry as the South re-branded itself the “Sun Belt.” In this collection of memoirs, writers, teachers, scholars and historians recall growing up in the South from the late 1950s to the early 1990s, revealing how the region changed over time, as well as how a Southern childhood varied across time, race, gender, socio-economic status, and geography. By viewing these remembrances through the lens of multiculturalism, this collection offers anuanced understanding of how the pre-civil rights movement South evolved into the South of the 21st century.

Book excerpt: There is so much happening as we the people of the world continue to evolve through COVID-19, with it, undoubtedly, being one of the most catastrophic events of modern times. This book is a continuation of my previous book titled; “Coronavirus: The Pandemic of the Century and the Wrath of God”. It recalls actual stories and memories thus far as mankind continues to evolve from the gloominess of COVID-19. This book represents my thoughts, views and various life events that I wish to share with you all. As a neurosurgeon and an anesthesiologist working the front lines within three major medical centers of the greater metropolitan area of Chicago, I have, without hesitancy, never closed my doors to my patients. My faith in our Lord Jesus and my abounding love to my patients, residents, and students has kept me going and strengthened my soul. During COVID and as the world coming out of COVID, it was a good time to flash back in marvelous works of our Lord, my patients stories and my achievements, performances, lessons learned. This book is centered in deep Christian rituals and meditations consisting of 115 chapters distributed over 12 sections touching on various topics that have passed through my mind during the evolution of COVID-19. These topics range from what I deem, critical COVID, all the way to vaccines, political COVID, and concomitant events as well as my personal memoirs, patient care, and the living stories of my patients. There is so much to share with you from April 2020 until the time of publication, so let us open the book and explore my time during COVID-19.

Download or read book Too Conscientious: The Evolution of Ethical Challenges to Professionalism in the American Medical Marketplace written by Douglas E. Lemley and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-02-25 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses the fundamental conflict of interest that physicians face in their daily work lives between the ethics of proper medical care versus the demands of standard business practices. However, unlike other books of this sort, this one places direct responsibility for this ethical dilemma upon the shoulders of physicians themselves. Taking ethical, legal, and business perspectives into account, the book traces the historically evolving response of American physicians to ever-increasing business interests within the profession. These financial concerns now have become intrinsic not only to the practice of medicine but seemingly also to the character of a growing segment of its practitioners. The book offers a plea for a change to a more socialized healthcare system as used in other advanced nations.
