This book was released on 2018-01-18 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Theory of Medical Science, the Doctrine of an Inherent Power in Medicine a Fallacy: The Ultimate Special Properties of Vitality and the Laws of Vital Force Constitute the Fundamental Basis of Medical, Philosophy and Science The supposed power in materia medica and poisons is an error Of gigantic magnitude, which has no place in nature, and is the greatest delusion of thought ever adopted by civilized humanity. The science Of medicine is based on only one source Of power, namely, the vital power; and a correct theory Of vitality demonstrates the ideal delusion which has invested materia medica and poisons with active principles or inherent powers. The relation of materia medica and poisons to the human organism not one of power, but one of cause. Causes may be derived from various sources, but organic activities in health and disease receive their momentum from vital power. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Thermo-Electrical or Natural System of Medicine: The Science of Life, Health, and Disease; Explanatory of the Mysteries of Man's Existence, and All the Phenomena of Life IT is now fourteen years since I published a work on the Philosophy of Life, Health, and Disease'-embodying new and original views explanatory of the mysteries of man's existence, and of the laws ordained by Creative Wisdom - by which he moves and thinks - by which he digests food and it sustains life - and, by the observance of which alone, he can hope to enjoy health; or if attacked by disease - by the knowledge they impart, most readily regain health. A work, which the Editor of a critical journal said - was as interesting as it was instructive - and which the Editor of the Medical Times did me the honour to say was on the whole excellent, - its excellencies such that any man might be proud of, and a work which no ordinary man could have written. My views at that time had not, how ever, attained to the fulness of their development - they marched up to the threshold Of the sanctum, but they did not enter the sanctuary, - they traced both health and dis ease to certain conditions of the blood - but they extended no farther. This, then, is the Object I hold in view to rectify - and trust in so doing, have now produced a work, though concise - yet complete in all its parts, which may with truth be designated - a perfect system of medicine uniting all the scattered fragments of the science into one harmonious whole-in accordance with their mutual de pendence and natural affinities. Book Synopsis Experimental Medicine by : Claude Bernard
Download or read book Experimental Medicine written by Claude Bernard and published by Transaction Publishers. This book was released on with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among great men, Claude Bernard should be counted fortunate in that he has not become a mythical figure. Pasteur's discoveries are hardly more remarkable, though their immediate influence has been much greater, and his horizon was incontestably less broad. But Bernard remains a plain man, highly distinguished, but not obscured by the growth of a legend. His physiological researches may have immortalized his name, but Experimental Medicine never exerted the influence which it promised. What Bernard saw as the future of physiology remained for decades obscured, so his writings were only half understood. His influence, however, was exerted far beyond medicine. Stewart Wolf suggests that Claude Bernard's genius in physiological experimentation is similar to the extraordinary Sherlock Holmes' capacity to solve crimes and William Osler's uncanny abilities in clinical diagnosis. Like both of those creative searchers, Claude Bernard typically focused on findings that did not accord with prevailing theory. His curiosity led him to attempt to explain the finding by a tentative hypothesis; he would then devise an experiment. Although he sought for a quantitative result that might serve as a basis of a theory, he had little confidence in statistics as a guide to certainty. Bernard's opposition scientists' prevailing habit of segregating their inquiries into systems rather than studying the unified organism is particularly striking. This volume will be important for those in the medical field as well as those interested in the history of science.
