Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Evolution of Ancient Hinduism Before commencing our studies it will be well for us to form a clear notion of the meaning of the word Hinduism. Hinduism Is the name of the orthodox religion of the Hindus, an Aryan race which migrated to the banks of the Indus, and gradually spread over that large portion of India now known 335 Hindustan. It is because Hinduism is the name given to the religion of the Hindu race that I venture, for philosophical purposes. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Primer of Hinduism IT is the conviction of the writer of this Primer that Hinduism cannot be understood unless it be studied historically. For this reason the first thirteen chapters of the book deal with the growth of the reli gion in connexion with the political and literary history of the country. Only when the student has realized how Hinduism came to be is he in a position to attempt to study any particular part of the religion. To think of the religion as a sort of intricate machine to be studied in pieces is to misconceive the whole. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Evolution of Ancient Hinduism It has long been my opinion, that a short history of the evolution of ancient Hinduism, from its primitive form up to its highest development, namely, Buddhism, would prove an interesting study to those who are fond of probing the mysteries and tracing the progress of the human mind. I have therefore taken the labour upon myself, and shall endeavour to point out, as accurately as I can, the main features of this evolutionary process. To attain my object I need not necessarily enter into any details of religious ceremonials, or legends of the gods, because these subjects, however interesting to those who make mythology their special study, are quite subsidiary to the main principles or philosophy of the Hindu religion. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hinduism Ancient and Modern: Viewed in the Light of the Incarnation The World Missionary Conference, held at Edin burgh, was not only an inspiring experience of a lifetime to those who had the privilege of taking part in it, but it was an outward symbol of an awakened zeal and of a new spirit of union, which was catholic both in its scope and character (at least one eminent Roman Catholic Prelate expressed his sympathy with the objects of the Conference) such as would not have been possible at any previous period in the history of Christendom. One important lesson of the Conference was the need of a more extensive study of missionary problems on the part of those interested in the extension of Christ's kingdom. If this need is to be met, an increase of our missionary literature must take place, and the literature which already exists must be revised in the light of the increasing knowledge of the missionaries who are engaged in the work abroad. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Providing new insights into the contemporary creationist-evolution debates, this book looks at the Hindu cultural-religious traditions of India, the Hindu Dharma traditions. By focusing on the interaction of religion and science in a Hindu context, it offers a global context for understanding contemporary creationist-evolution conflicts and tensions utilizing a critical analysis of Hindu perspectives on these issues. The cultural and political as well as theological nature of these conflicts is illustrated by drawing attention to parallels with contemporary Islamic and Buddhist responses to modern science and Darwinism. The book explores various ancient and classical Hindu models to explain the origin of the universe encompassing creationist as well as evolutionary—but non-Darwinian—interpretations of how we came to be. Complex schemes of cosmic evolution were developed, alongside creationist proofs for the existence of God utilizing distinctly Hindu versions of the design argument. After examining diverse elements of the Hindu Dharmic traditions that laid the groundwork for an ambivalent response to Darwinism when it first became known in India, the book highlights the significance of the colonial context. Analysing critically the question of compatibility between traditional Dharmic theories of knowledge and the epistemological assumptions underlying contemporary scientific methodology, the book raises broad questions regarding the frequently alleged harmony of Hinduism, the eternal Dharma, with modern science, and with Darwinian evolution in particular.

In doing this, I have indicated, in a general way, how these influences have moulded the modern literature of India. It is my intention to present in the next volume a more complete account of the present intellectual condition of the Hindus as reflected in literature. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A. Barth's The Religions of India is a survey of the popular religions of India. Originally written for inclusion in an encyclopedia, Barth later expanded the work to a standalone text, which is more suitable for a document of such depth. The author begins with an examination of the Vedic religions, commonly thought of as the precursor religions to Hinduism. Barth traces the spread of these religions through time and the evolution of ancient religions into more modern religions, proceeding to explore Brahmanism, Buddhism, Jainism, and Hinduism in great depth, highlighting the history and practices of each. Barth writes in a distinguished, authoritative tone. It is apparent that the origin of this writing was inclusion in an encyclopedia, as the text is heavy with facts and raw information. While there is some degree of exposition and argumentative analysis, the focus here is clearly on presenting the information. The Religions of India would make a great textbook. It is clear, concise, and contains a wealth of information. Amateur historians and readers of religious history will likely find this to be an interesting read, and it makes a valuable addition to the library of anybody interested in India's religions.
