Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Eve of Catholic Emancipation, Vol. 3 of 3: Being the History of the English Catholics During the First Thirty Years of the Nineteenth Century; 1820-1829 Early in the year 1817, the Rev. Paul Macpherson resigned the agency of the English bishops. He had found the work heavy, and was himself becoming an old man. He had also had some differences with Dr. Poynter during the latter's Visit to Rome, as we have seen, while on the other hand, Cardinal Litta had always treated him with a certain suspicion. It was natural that he should prefer to give his time to the service of the Scotch bishops, and now that there was a prospect of the Scots' College being re-established, he looked upon that as his chief work. The English bishops, though grateful for his past services, did not oppose his resignation. The Rev. Robert Smelt being now dead, l they had enough money to pay their own agent, and it was evidently to their advantage to have one who could give his Whole time and thought to their interests. Their Choice fell on the Rev. Robert Gradwell. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Eve of Catholic Emancipation, Vol. 1 of 3: Being the History of the English Catholics During the First Thirty Years of the Nineteenth Century It may perhaps be thought that some apology is required for undertaking so ambitious a work as what is practically a history of English Catholics during an important and even critical epoch, on the part of one who has already a fair amount of practical work to occupy him, and who cannot possibly devote the amount of time and attention which the subject seems to require. If such is urged, the chief justification to plead would be the very kind reception which the Dawn of the Catholic Revival in England (1781-1803) - a similar work undertaken under similar conditions - met with, and the kind hope expressed - even with some importunity - by many persons whose wishes carry weight, that the work should be continued. The Archbishop of Westminster once more kindly offered the use of all the papers in his Archives, as also did the Bishop of Clifton, and the other Bishops and heads of Colleges who had helped the former work in this manner, repeated their kindness in the present instance. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Eve of Catholic Emancipation, Vol. 2 of 3: Being the History of the English Catholics During the First Thirty Years of the Nineteenth Century; 1812-1820 Soon after this, Parliament was somewhat unexpectedly dissolved, to test the feelings of the constituencies. The elec tion took place in the autumn, and resulted in a strengthening of the Government's position: but the House of Commons remained pledged to consider the Catholic question during the following year, with a View to a settlement, with at least the consent of the Government. A critical time for the Catholics was foreshadowed. Such were the difficulties in public affairs which awaited Dr. Poynter during the first year of his rule in the London District; and he was called upon to confront them at a time when the internal difficulties of his office were not slight. For Milner was ever on the watch, ready to find fault with any false step he might take, while the Irish bishops made no secret of their distrust of him. "Bishop Baines succeeded in raising the profile of the Catholic Church, particularly in the west of England. Book excerpt: The story of Catholicism in Britain from the Reformation to the present day, from a master of popular history – 'A first-class storyteller' The Times Throughout the three hundred years that followed the Act of Supremacy – which, by making Henry VIII head of the Church, confirmed in law the breach with Rome – English Catholics were prosecuted, persecuted and penalised for the public expression of their faith. Even after the passing of the emancipation acts Catholics were still the victims of institutionalised discrimination. The first book to tell the story of the Catholics in Britain in a single volume, The Catholics includes much previously unpublished information. It focuses on the lives, and sometimes deaths, of individual Catholics – martyrs and apostates, priests and laymen, converts and recusants. It tells the story of the men and women who faced the dangers and difficulties of being what their enemies still call ‘Papists’. It describes the laws which circumscribed their lives, the political tensions which influenced their position within an essentially Anglican nation and the changes in dogma and liturgy by which Rome increasingly alienated their Protestant neighbours – and sometime even tested the loyalty of faithful Catholics. The survival of Catholicism in Britain is the triumph of more than simple faith. It is the victory of moral and spiritual unbending certainty. Catholicism survives because it does not compromise. It is a characteristic that excites admiration in even a hardened atheist.
