Book Synopsis Guidelines for Sampling Fish in Inland Waters by : R. L. Welcomme
Download or read book Guidelines for Sampling Fish in Inland Waters written by R. L. Welcomme and published by Bernan Press(PA). This book was released on 1980 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is addressed mainly to Fishery Biologists but it is hoped that Fishing Gear Technologists also can acquire some basic knowledge of sampling problems and procedures which, in turn, can result in improved design of gears. The scope of these guidelines is limited to various techniques for capturing and observing fish at all stages of life. It is confined to inland waters, but a wide range of habitats in which fish can be sampled is recognized. Some of these techniques do not differ from those used in commercial or artisanal fisheries, but for sampling they should be used with understanding of the intricate relationships between fish and the gears in operation. The statistical aspects of sampling form an important part of this understanding. The other part is that related to construction and mode of operation of a gear. The reader should be able to choose a gear, or a set of devices, most suitable for his sampling programme out of those described here, although the guidelines do not offer detailed information on the construction of the gears.

Book Synopsis Fishing with Electricity by : K. P. Biswas
Download or read book Fishing with Electricity written by K. P. Biswas and published by Daya Publishing House. This book was released on 2019 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book envisages the use of under-water electric field for catching fish. The use of electricity for catching fish has been practiced from a long time by the fishermen of different regions, the recorded evidence of which goes to 1886, when one Mr. Isham Bagg was issued a patent in Britain for catching fish with electricity. The author is the first person, who undertook fishing with electric seine as early as 1962 in Odisha, and in 2015 by developing an electric fish catcher. Originally, after several studies on fish electrophysiology, in different countries, the technique was applied in freshwater fisheries, like, streams, rivers, lakes and reservoirs, mainly for research and investigations and fisheries management. In this book, the author has tried to compile the basic principles of electrofishing system, with reference to design, construction and field application with the precautions and safety measures to be followed while construction and use of the electrofishing gear not only for the operational crews, but also for the fishes to avoid unnecessary mortality and injuries. The experiments and trial of electrofishing in sea water, particularly, of pulse trawling for flat fish, Hovercran shrimp trawling, and experiments with pelagic fishes in design criteria for electrical fish harvesting systems, which includes netless fish harvesting and mid-water electric trawling have find place in the book. The principal system components of electric fishing machine, its design consideration, power transmission, both from battery operated backpack and boat mounted electrode array and the factors affecting the efficiency of electrical fishing gear have been taken into account in the book.
Book Synopsis Environmental and Water Quality Operational Studies: Evaluation of Larval Fish Sampling Gears for Use on Large Rivers by : Timothy R. Bosley
Download or read book Environmental and Water Quality Operational Studies: Evaluation of Larval Fish Sampling Gears for Use on Large Rivers written by Timothy R. Bosley and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 57 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of five different collecting gears in sampling larval fishes associated with dikes and revetments. The tests were conducted on the Lower Mississippi River at mile 508.8 and miles 447-448. The five collecting gears used were: Plankton nets fished at discrete depths in the water column of a dike pool and the main channel; a push sled; a diaphragm pump; an electroshocker; and basket implants. These gears were used during the day and night to describe diel and temporal changes in the larval fish community in main channel, dike pool, dike, revetment, and sandbar habitats. The discrete depth net gear was effective in documenting the vertical, diel, and temporal distribution of ichthyoplankton drift in the main channel and dike pool habitats. Similarities and differences in ichthyoplankton abundance and diversity occurred between habitats. The most notable observation was the comparable abundance among like depth strata between habitats in May. In June, the surface stratum at each habitat contained a far greater abundance of larvae than the samples collected at lower depths. The push sled was effective for sampling shallow water in the vicinity of sandbars. Use of the sled revealed diel and temporal differences in the shallow-water ichthyoplankton.
