Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1983, this book presents both the technical and political information necessary to evaluate the emerging threat to world security posed by recent advances in uranium enrichment technology. Uranium enrichment has played a relatively quiet but important role in the history of efforts by a number of nations to acquire nuclear weapons and by a number of others to prevent the proliferation of nuclear weapons. For many years the uranium enrichment industry was dominated by a single method, gaseous diffusion, which was technically complex, extremely capital-intensive, and highly inefficient in its use of energy. As long as this remained true, only the richest and most technically advanced nations could afford to pursue the enrichment route to weapon acquisition. But during the 1970s this situation changed dramatically. Several new and far more accessible enrichment techniques were developed, stimulated largely by the anticipation of a rapidly growing demand for enrichment services by the world-wide nuclear power industry. This proliferation of new techniques, coupled with the subsequent contraction of the commercial market for enriched uranium, has created a situation in which uranium enrichment technology might well become the most important contributor to further nuclear weapon proliferation. Some of the issues addressed in this book are: A technical analysis of the most important enrichment techniques in a form that is relevant to analysis of proliferation risks; A detailed projection of the world demand for uranium enrichment services; A summary and critique of present institutional non-proliferation arrangements in the world enrichment industry, and An identification of the states most likely to pursue the enrichment route to acquisition of nuclear weapons.

Book Synopsis Britain, Europe and Civil Nuclear Energy, 1945–62 by : Martin Theaker
Download or read book Britain, Europe and Civil Nuclear Energy, 1945–62 written by Martin Theaker and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-03-15 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the role played by civil nuclear energy in Britain’s relationship with Europe between the end of the Second World War and London’s first application to join the European Communities. Tracing the development of the British nuclear programme as it emerged as a global leader in constructing the world’s first atomic power stations, it analyses how the threat of energy shortages throughout the 1950s presented ministers with a golden opportunity to utilise nuclear cooperation as an instrument to influence the political shape of Europe. Importantly, this book will show how this chance was missed by ministers due to a combination of disorganization and diplomatic pressure, as well as a perennial lack of domestic resources. In so doing, this book joins the long-disconnected historiographies of European integration and nuclear energy to offer a new perspective on both scholarly fields.

Book Synopsis Sources of Information on Atomic Energy by : L. J. Anthony
Download or read book Sources of Information on Atomic Energy written by L. J. Anthony and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sources of Information on Atomic Energy is a guide to available literature on atomic energy and to the organizations which originate atomic energy information. The book opens with a chapter that describes, in fairly simple terms, the various aspects of atomic energy and to show how they are related to each other and to other technologies. This is followed by separate chapters that describe the development, organization, and activities of the major national atomic energy projects and other national organizations concerned with atomic energy. These include United Kingdom and those Commonwealth countries which have well-developed atomic energy programs; the main sources of information in the United States; and atomic energy organization in the Soviet Union and some of the smaller countries in the Soviet Bloc. Also discussed are international atomic energy organizations and published literature of atomic energy. Although it is hoped that everyone seeking information in the nuclear energy field will find this guide useful, it has been written primarily with the needs of librarians and information officers in mind since they are often the first people to be approached when information is needed.

Book Synopsis The Future of the International Legal Order, Volume 3 by : Cyril E. Black
Download or read book The Future of the International Legal Order, Volume 3 written by Cyril E. Black and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2019-01-29 with total page 431 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The eleven contributors to this volume come to grips with the hard realities of controlling war in our modern, interrelated world. All of them deal directly with the role of law in the management of conflict. From Cyril E. Black's introductory chapter, "Conflict Management and World Order," to Richard J. Barnet's concluding chapter, "Toward the Control of International Violence: The Limits and the Possibilities of Law," each expert moves from analysis of some immediate problem of international legal control to the direct application of law to war. The contributors include Tom J. Farer, Rosalyn Higgins, John Norton Moore, Daniel Wiles, William B. Bader, Arnold Kramish, Mason Willrich, W. Michael Reisman, and Harold Feiveson. Conflict Management is the third volume in a large-scale collaborative research project intended to focus the attention of international lawyers and social scientists on the near future of the international legal order. A brochure describing the entire series is available. Cyril E. Black is Duke Professor of Russian History and Director of the Center of International Studies, Princeton University. Richard A. Falk is Milbank Professor of International Law and Practice, Princeton University. Written under the auspices of the Center of Interntional Studies, Princeton University.
