Book excerpt: This paper studies the role of the German economy for the existence of the so called European business cycle, a term referring to the regularly observed synchronization of the national business cycles in Europe. Using a three-country general equilibrium model, we are able to simulate impulse response functions mimicking the important features observed in the data. Focusing on the importance of shocks affecting the German GDP we show that trade-related transmission from Germany to the other European economies is only of minor importance for the synchronization of national business cycles. On the contrary, our findings suggest that the influence of common shocks and of technology spillovers accounts for most of the parallels in economic performance. -- European business cycle ; Transmission ; Open economy macroeconomics ; Real business cycles

This study does this for the Austrian economy for the period between 1976 and 2005, using only quarterly national accounts data of Austria, Germany and the euro area. Three different filtering methods are applied: first-order differences, the Hodrick-Prescott filter, and the Baxter-King filter. To all of them, two different methods of determining the business cycle are applied: the ad-hoc determination of the business cycle and a dynamic factor model, taking into account the common variations of Austria, the euro area and the German business cycle movements. The results of both methods are dated by the Bry-Boschan algorithm in order to locate peaks and troughs of the cycle. The results are interpreted and compared to already exiting studies on the euro area and the Austrian business cycle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper analyzes the evolution of the degree of global cyclical interdependence over the period 1960-2005. We categorize the 106 countries in our sample into three groups-industrial countries, emerging markets, and other developing economies. Using a dynamic factor model, we then decompose macroeconomic fluctuations in key macroeconomic aggregates-output, consumption, and investment-into different factors. These are: (i) a global factor, which picks up fluctuations that are common across all variables and countries; (ii) three group-specific factors, which capture fluctuations that are common to all variables and all countries within each group of countries; (iii) country factors, which are common across all aggregates in a given country; and (iv) idiosyncratic factors specific to each time series. Our main result is that, during the period of globalization (1985-2005), there has been some convergence of business cycle fluctuations among the group of industrial economies and among the group of emerging market economies. Surprisingly, there has been a concomitant decline in the relative importance of the global factor. In other words, there is evidence of business cycle convergence within each of these two groups of countries but divergence (or decoupling) between them.

Book excerpt: The length of the crisis that started in 2007/08 has brought the role of uncertainty in macroeconomic fluctuations to the fore. While economic theory suggests that increases in uncertainty have a negative impact on economic activity by depressing hiring, investment and consumption, measuring uncertainty is intrinsically difficult. The highlight section looks into a relatively new approach to measuring uncertainty based on survey data. The approach is based on the idea that respondents' survey replies will be more or less concordant, depending on the degree of (un- )certainty about the future course of the economy. Looking into the evolution of an uncertainty index that measures the degree of dispersion of replies in the different sectors of the economy, the section concludes that survey data can be useful to gauge economic uncertainty. However, the empirical functioning of the presented measure applied to real survey data also points to some non-trivial caveats that call for caution in the interpretation of the measure and require more work to fully understand the at times opposing mechanics driving the results.-- EU Bookshop.
