Book excerpt: [The design for living carried by the people of Ulithi Atoll becomes sharp and clear in this case study. Dr. Lessa writes in succinct and specific language. He makes no attept to dramatize. The way of life he describes is so esoteric by Western norms that dramatization would be redundant].

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ulithi Atoll, Micronesia draws together rich and varied sources of information on this important Pacific Island community. Representing multi-disciplinary research and literary traditions, the 12 authors report on various aspects of life, culture, economics, human development, island challenges, and the ecology of Ulithi. Experiences of Ulithians are traced through successive periods of competitive explorers and traders; the Spanish, German, Japanese, and US colonial periods; and finally, Ulithi's emergence into its self-governing status within Yap State of the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM). Each author of this book has had significant experience within Ulithi Atoll and among Ulithian people. Three of the writers- Eulalia Harui-Walsh, Joliene Hasugulayag, and Joshua Walsh- bring their own indigenous experiences and wisdom to their chapters. Each chapter is enriched by information about or provided by contemporary Ulithians.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the western Pacific Ocean north of the equator, the far-flung islands of Micronesia extend across an area as large as that of the United States. Most of this area is administered by the United States as a trusteeship granted by the United Nations after World War II. Having been governed in turn by three other world powers— Spain, Germany, and Japan— the 91,000 Micronesian inhabitants are now at last in the process of working out their own political future. This book, a thorough, scholarly study of the development of the legislative process in the Trust Territory, focuses on the Congress of Micronesia, the legislature destined to carry the burden of the political development in the Territory. It examines institution-building over a period of two decades, describing how American forms and processes have been modified to fit the indigenous cultures of Micronesia, and how these cultures have accommodated to them. It also treats the impact of institutional change upon the role of indigenous leadership, highlighting the emergence of Micronesian leaders most capable of participating in the new political system. Here are detailed the day by day negotiations to set up a district legislature between the spokesmen for aboriginal Yap (of stone money fame) and the chiefs of the island empire which once paid it tribute. Here is described what happens when the U.S. Supreme Court’s “one man, one vote” formula is applied to people yet learning how to vote. The United States today has no defined policy for the eventual status of her Pacific island possessions. The future of Guam and American Samoa remains unclear. But the legislators of the Trust Territory have acted for the people they represent. Their adopted legislative institution will be central in determining whether or not the Trust Territory will become fully self-governing and independent.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: American Anthropology in Micronesia: An Assessment evaluates how anthropological research in the Trust Territory has affected the Micronesian people, the U.S. colonial administration, and the discipline of anthropology itself. Contributors analyze the interplay between anthropology and history, in particular how American colonialism affected anthropologists' use of history, and examine the research that has been conducted by American anthropologists in specific topical areas of socio-cultural anthropology. Although concentrating largely on disciplinary concerns, the authors consider the connections between work done in the era of applied anthropology and that completed later when anthropology was pursued mainly for its own sake. The focus then returns to applied concerns in more recent years and issues pertaining to the relevance of anthropology for the world of practical affairs. It will be of essential interest to students and scholars of Pacific Islands studies and the history of anthropology.

Book excerpt: Cultural Anthropology: Global forces, local lives is an accessible ethnographically rich cultural anthropology textbook which gives a coherent and refreshingly new vision of the discipline and its subject matter--human diversity. The fifteen chapters and three extended case studies present all of the necessary areas of cultural anthropology, organizing them in conceptually and thematically meaningful and original ways. A full one-third of its content is dedicated to important global and historical cultural phenomena such as colonialism, nationalism, ethnicity and ethnic conflict, economic development, environmental issues, cultural revival, fundamentalism, and popular culture. The more conventional topics of anthropology (language, economics, kinship, politics, religion, race) are integrated into this broader discussion to reflect the changing content of contemporary courses. This well written and well organised text has been trialled both in the classroom and online. The author has extensive teaching experience and is especially good at presenting material clearly matching his exposition to the pace of students' understanding. Specially designed in colour to be useful to today's students, Cultural Anthropology: Global forces, local lives: supports study with chapter case studies on subjects as diverse as "Doing Anthropology at Microsoft" to "Banning Religious Symbols in France" explains difficult key terms with marginal glosses and links related topics with marginal cross-references assists revision with boxed chapter summaries, an extensive bibliography and index illustrates concepts and commentary with a vivid range of photographs drawn from the most contemporary anthropological sources provides a support website which includes study guides, powerpoint presentations, chapter supplements, multiple-choice, essay, and assignment questions, a model course mapped to the textbook, a flashcard glossary of terms, links to useful maps

Book excerpt: Part ethnography, part memoir, and part critical reflection on the Anthropocene, this book examines the ways that islands form and inform human experiences of the everyday and the extraordinary. Utilizing carefully considered anthropological perspectives drawn from over a decade of anthropological fieldwork, the author employs islands as a complex set of lenses to examine the ways that we are intimately connected, separated, and divided from ourselves, one another, and the planet. Moving across time, place and disciplinary boundaries, this book traces a narrative route from the remote islands of Micronesia to the subarctic expanses of northern Iceland, all in service of gaining a deeper understanding of the cultural resonance of islands. This book offers the reader a type of ideological travel guide, one that exchanges restaurant reviews and hotel recommendations for pathways of reflection and new modes of seeing and being in the world. It will be of interest to scholars in the social sciences and humanities, and readers from human geography, cultural studies, sociology, philosophy and American studies.
