Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ethics of the Old Testament But although scientific form be wanting, we shall find, as we examine the history of Israel's growth, that there is a progress from the external to the internal, from the form to the substance, of true morality. Even when, after the Exile, a serious declension from a lofty ethical attitude takes place, the lapse only helps to exhibit the deficiency of the prevalent legalism, and in reality serves a highly educative purpose. At the present time this subject is one of growing importance. Of recent years a great revival of Biblical study has taken place. The Scriptures Of the Old Testament have been invested for all Christian minds with unusual interest, . And therefore constitute a peculiarly inviting field of research. The richness of their material, the variety of their forms, the antiquity Of their origin, and the unity in which that wonderful variety of topic and treatment is harmoniously blended, have all combined to render this study attractive. To many minds that old book is becoming a new book, standing in new relations, enriched with new contents, and filled with spiritual meaning. And at the heart of its greatselves, making for morality. The ethics of the Old and that of the New Testament are linked into a solidarity of life and interest. The historical method has helped us, as from a mountain top, to distinguish the trend of the great moral purpose which runs from the first chapter of Genesis to the last chapter of the Revelation of St. John. We understand more clearly the significance of St. Augus tine's words: Norum testamentum in vetere latet: vetus e novo pater. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ethics and Theology of the Old Testament He has based his conclusions not upon those of great Old Testament scholars alone, but on an independent and careful examina tion of the various books. Had greater space been at his disposal, he could have elaborated both the evidence and conclu sions drawn from it. His work has been a labour of love undertaken in a spirit of deep reverence, yet with that freedom of investigation which alone can lead towards truth. It is his earnest desire to induce others to study the Old Testament, that they too may perceive the wonderful evolu tion of thought and conduct, which is shown so clearly in its various writings. He acknowledges thankfully his debt to Dr. Mellone, Principal of the Unitarian Home Missionary College, for real help and valuable suggestions. In its histories deeds are recorded which it is difficult for us to justify and from its moral teachings not a few passages might be cited which do not com mend themselves wholly to a tender Christian conscience. From such moral difficulties and imperfections an argument is often gathered against the alleged fact of a divine revelation in the religion of Israel. It is tacitly assumed that faulty human characters could not be. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ethics of the Old Testament Our aim in this volume is to exhibit in short compass the ethics of the Old Testament in its historic growth and development. It is desirable that we should know what were the sources of moral activity in Israel, and what is the correct interpretation of the life that was lived under the Mosaic Law. We shall try to discover what good men in those days thought of duty, on what grounds they based obligation, and how they endeavoured to fulfil the great end of life. The ethics of the Old Testament does not start with any abstract theory of virtue. We need not expect to find in it anything approaching scientific method. It was not given in a form that claimed perfection; and it bears the marks of incompleteness on its face. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bible Ethics: A Manual of Instruction in the History and Principles of Judaism, According to the Hebrew Scriptures It is the design of this little work to lead up, by progressive steps, to the study of the Bible. Its matter is Biblical. It is the religion and moral code of the Bible which is here taught, freed from the doc trines of theology. This is pure judaism, but is at the same time that in which Jew and non-jew agree, because it is religion shorn of that added material in' which no two sects entirely coincide. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ethical Teaching of Jesus This book originated from a course of lectures, which were prepared for the students of the Union Theological Seminary, in the fulfilment of my duty as Professor of Biblical Theology. The field of Bib lical Theology may be divided into three divisions. Biblical Religion, Biblical Faith, and Biblical Ethics (see General Introduction to the Study of Holy Scripture pp. 604 sq). After the completion of the courses on Biblical Religion and Biblical Faith I undertook an inductive study of Biblical Ethics. This I found to be a comparatively unexplored field; for most scholars have devoted their attention to the central theme, the Biblical Faith: many to the Re ligion of the Old Testament; but few to the Ethics, either of the Old Testament, or the New Testament; and these few have for the most part considered the subject on the basis of selected passages for homi letical or practical purposes from the point of view of the ethical Philosophy, which they held. My atten tion was first given to the ethics of the Old Testa ment, after which I made a complete inductive study of the Ethics of Jesus. This study was revised sev eral times as the lectures were repeated to different classes. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Old Testament in of Light of Study: In Moral Development The one thing of supreme importance in the Old Testament, actually and historically, is the idea of God the focal point of its significance for humanity. That idea did not come in full feather, nor fall as a bolt from the blue. In a long history of progress, it presents the necessity of choice between the higher and the lower, the better and the worse. The advance of Bib lical scholarship, and the change from an instructional to an educational view of revelation, have made the choice easier, so that a rich heritage need no longer prove a poor possession. The helpful teacher of the Old Testament now employs the higher achievements of Israel's religion as grave-diggers for the defunct moral crudities that have dropped by the way. The usual procedure has been to embalm them with a Thus saith the Lord, and to carry them along until the living expire under the dead. I cherish the modest hope that this book may help students and teachers of the Old Testament to find a new and securer place for it in the religious thought of our time. Although it embodies results of ten years of special study and practical experience in teaching, it still falls so far short of its simple purpose that I shall be the last to consider it blamed unduly if it meets with evil as well as good report. And to Aaron, the high priest. Such laws are far too numerous to discuss in detail.
