Book excerpt: Excerpt from Religious Education in the Church The world is not indifferent to religion; it is becoming more conscious of its spiritual needs. There is almost a religious devotion in the principal charge against the church, that it is not on to its job. This seems to mean not alone that it is inefficient, but that it does not perceive its task. That is the heart of the problem, the lack of a sufficiently clear, distinct, and definite function, one that will meet a need otherwise unmet, one that Will convince the minds, . Enlist the wills, and win the hearts of all men and women of spiritual perceptions. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Essential Place of Religion in Education Not all forces in the environment are equally powerful or equally valuable in stimulating the native impulses. Teaching consists essentially in selecting and employing the appropriate and effective ones. This must be done according to the law of life responses. Law of Life Responses. A living organism is sensitive and responsive to the the kind or order of nature that gave it its birth and being; the fish is adapted to water, the bird to air, the eye to light, the lungs to air. A child is born by and into a social order'. If a human child has a divine heredity, then it can be sensitive and responsive to this divine order. If there is no response of religious impulses to a religious order there can be no religious development. This book was released on 2017-09-16 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Social Theory of Religious Education What consequences for religious education follow from the now widely accepted social interpretation of the Christian mes sage? The present work is an attempt to answer this question. The answer is not simple. For the social message does not require us merely to insert this or that new duty into our present scheme of living, but also to judge every detail of conduct from a higher point of view. We are required to organize the whole of life upon a different level. It would be strange indeed if the new meaning that this gives to every-day affairs did not change our outlook upon child life. If we are to be logical and practical in our social Christianity, we must revise our policies with respect to children at least as much as our policies with respect to adults. The chapters that follow undertake to show the directions that this revision will need to take. As we proceed, it will appear that the whole perspective of religious education undergoes a change. The central purpose, to begin with, grows more specific because the nature of good ness is seen to be as concrete as the neighbor who lives next door. Christian experience comes out of the clouds, because in our dealings with our brother whom we have seen we are deal ing with the Father whom we have not seen - yes, we here come into relation with what is deepest in his character and purposes. To Christian ears these statements do not sound strange, per haps, yet when they are applied to the religious life of the young they do sing a new melody. A profounder significance attaches to the will of a child, and especially to his relations with persons, whether children or adults. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Essentials of Religious Education This text-book is the outgrowth of the lectures given to my students at the Temple University during the last several years. A large number of the students, and others outside of the University, interested in religious education, have frequently requested me to prepare a book on the subject. To meet this request the book has been written. The volume has been prepared for students in universities, colleges, and theological seminaries, who are interested in the religious pedagogical courses, and is primarily a text-book, since it was desired to place in the hands of students a book dealing particularly with the subject of religious education. It is believed that the book will meet this need and requirement. I have not been unmindful of the large army of faithful and active Bible School teachers who are anxious by careful reading and study to better prepare themselves for their noble work, and I hope this work will prove helpful to them also. To the many friends, Christian teachers, and instructors who have helped by their advice I am very grateful. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Religious Education in the Home Taking education as "the systematic development and cultivation of the mind and other natural powers," "Religious Education in the Home" means the systematic development and cultivation, under home influences, of the religious nature of the child. That this is a work of unsurpassed importance is plain to everyone who gives it serious thought. It may be safely asserted that no other method for the propagation of our Christian religion can compare with it. The lack of right home cultivation of the religious life is everywhere felt to be a very serious hindrance to the work of the church. The more the subject is studied the deeper will grow the conviction that in our efforts to lead the young into the religious life we have not begun early enough; that we cannot begin too early; and that we have depended too much on instruction, ignoring some things of much greater importance. That we have been at fault somewhere is clearly evident from the results. One generation of children arises after another, and always the drift of the majority is away from Christ. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Religious Education of Adolescents In selecting and preparing the material for this little volume, the author has intentionally avoided the exclusively academic and scholastic point of View. The needs Of parents, teachers and other adult leaders, who are facing practical problems, have been kept in mind. Indeed, many of the paragraphs were written for the express purpose Of answering questions which had been asked by per sons who were facing perplexing situations in their own homes or schools. During the past three years, the author has delivered several short courses of lectures in con munity schools Of religious education and in sum mer schools on such subjects as: The Psychology Of Adolescent Boyhood, The Religious Nurture Of Adolescent Young People, The Psychology of Religion, and Principles and Methods Of Recrea tional Leadership. As collateral reading in these courses, one monograph Of a series Of pamphlets formerly published by the American Institute of Child Life Of Philadelphia: The Government Of Adolescent Young People, prepared by William Byron Forbush, was used. The demand for it soon exhausted the third edition. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Religious Education and for the Healing of the Church It seems strange that Luther in neither of his treatises on the establishment of public schools speaks specifically of the religious education of the child. His catechisms were not written for the school, but for 'pastors and teachers, ' as the preface to the Small Catechism says, and for 'house-fathers, ' as the headings of the various parts say. Even Gerhard looks to the ministers and not to the schools for the religious training of the children. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
