Book excerpt: Transit scholars have long advocated the use of differentiated transit pricing to improve service efficiency and equity among riders. Using Metropolitan Vancouver as a case study, I examine the effects on transit revenues and equity measures of two strategies - distance-based and time-of-day pricing. The analysis uses an established transportation forecasting model, combined with survey data from TransLink and estimates of price elasticity of demand from the literature to predict change in demand due to change in the fare structure. Information from transit agencies in Washington, DC, and Toronto, Ontario provides insights into issues of implementation complexity and public and political acceptance of differentiated fare structures. The analysis reveals an improvement in terms of increase in trips and reduced fares for lower income, captive and transit-dependent riders, and for riders from certain municipalities, with distance-based pricing. With a time-of-day fare structure there is slight improvement for low-income riders, an increase in revenues, and a small shift of trips from peak to off-peak times. The study recommends that the region's transit agency develop a fare policy with consideration of a differentiated fare structure to improve service efficiency and equity among riders.

Book excerpt: This expanded and revised fifth edition of The Geography of Transport Systems provides a comprehensive and accessible introduction to the field with a broad overview of its concepts, methods and areas of application. Aimed mainly at an undergraduate audience, it provides an overview of the spatial aspects of transportation and focuses on how the mobility of passengers and freight is linked with geography. The book is divided into ten chapters, each covering a specific conceptual dimension, including networks, modes, terminals, freight transportation, urban transportation and environmental impacts, and updated with the latest information available. The fifth edition offer new and updated material on information technologies and mobility, e-commerce, transport and the economy, mobility and society, supply chains, security, pandemics, energy and the environment and climate change. With over 140 updated figures and maps, The Geography of Transport Systems presents transportation systems at different scales ranging from global to local. This volume is an essential resource for undergraduates studying transport geography, as well as those interested in economic and urban geography, transport planning and engineering. A companion web site, which contains additional material such as photographs, maps, figures and PowerPoint presentations, has been developed for the book and can be found here: https://transportgeography.org/

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "As traditional sources of funding for the nation's surface transportation system fail to keep pace with demand, proposals for new sources have proliferated. New funding strategies, such as pricing the use of new and existing roads, and new institutional arrangements, such as public-private partnerships, have emerged over the past few years. As with all transportation policies, these strategies raise questions about equity. To address these concerns, the Transportation Research Board convened an expert committee to provide guidance to public officials about assessing the equity of evolving transportation finance mechanisms. The committee's findings are presented in this report. They are organized under the following chapter headings: (1) Equity and Transportation Finance; (2) How Transportation is Funded and Who Pays; (3) Equity Through Different Lenses; (4) Transportation Finance Equity: Evidence and Experience; (5) Equity and Decision Making: Experience with Road Pricing; and (6) Findings and Recommendations."--pub. desc.
