Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This highly original book develops a systematic zero-net-profit comparative statics theory of the firm that challenges many widely held views in microeconomics. It builds a bridge between the marginalist long-run theory of the firm and Sraffian theory to create a unified theoretical framework that explains how firms react to exogenous shocks resulting in new equilibrium positions of the whole economy. The central message of the book is that too often economists expect more from the microeconomic laws of input demand and output supply than they can really give. The authors show that the zero-net-profit condition requires a more articulated analysis that sometimes yields qualitative results contrary to those of familiar economic laws. Written for academic researchers and graduate students, the book will be of particular interest to those working on the microeconomics of industry equilibrium, comparative statics and Sraffian economics.

Download or read book Applied Industrial Economics written by Louis Phlips and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1998-09-24 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This reader provides a unique mix of American and European contributions to the study of particular markets, often combined with a critical evaluation of antitrust regulations, decisions or judgments. Part I explains market structure as a function of sunk costs and market size. Part II illustrates the central role of pricing schemes (including parallel pricing, delivered pricing and competition clauses) in sustaining equilibrium outcomes in oligopolistic markets. Parts III and IV give a game-theoretic foundation to competition policy and merger control. Louis Phlips offers a comprehensive introduction to the text in which he very carefully explains the reasoning behind his choice of papers, and provides a superb synthesis of the material. Particular highlights include the discussion and evaluation of antitrust regulations, which involve a systematic comparative analysis of European and American regulations, decisions and judgments in this area.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Equilibrium in Industry: Address as President of the American Statistical Association, Annual Meeting, Atlantic City, New Jersey, December 29, 1920 The primitive man did everything for himself, and enjoyed the maximum degree of independence, but lived in a very low state of civilization. The development of the arts, the rise of the standard of living and the expansion of the mental horizon, have come with the division of labor, but the division of labor by its very terms requires that men shall exchange products and services with each other, becoming mutually helpful and dependent. Download or read book Industry Equilibrium with Random Exit or Default written by Svetlana Boyarchenko and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 29 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An industry consisting of a large number of small (fixed size) firms subject to idiosyncratic productivity shocks is considered. At the moment of entry, a firm takes on debt. We demonstrate that in a competitive equilibrium, some firms exit and pay out their debt while others choose to default. The outcome depends on the realization of firm specific shocks. We solve for the long-run equilibrium price of output and borrowing rate and derive the stationary distribution of active firms for two scenarios of the initial distribution of productivity shocks. Dependence of equilibrium variables on the leverage is examined.
