Her readings of the Lettres portugaises, Mme du Deffand's correspondence with Horace Walpole, and Rousseau's La Nouvelle Hlose propose an alternative to closure-oriented theories of narrative as they uncover an interplay between two forces: a tendency towards closure and meaning (metaphor) and a tendency towards openness and desire (metonymy). While such an interplay structures all narrative, the epistolary form differs from the third or first person in the extent to which metonymy predominates. The author shows how critics and editors of correspondences have attempted to control their metonymy, channeling epistolary energy into univocal meaning. By juxtaposing real and fictional epistolary works, MacArthur reveals the similarities between the two, particularly their "extravagance": ambiguity, openness, and forward-moving energy. In manual, prose or poetic form, printed letter collections make private matters public, and in so doing reveal, first how tenuous is the divide between these two realms in the early modern period and, second, how each collection helps to constitute particular communities of readers. Consequently, as Epistolary Community details, epistolary visions of community were gendered. This book provides a genealogy of epistolary discourse beginning with an introductory discussion of Gabriel Harvey and Edmund Spenser’s Wise and Wittie Letters (1580), and opening into chapters on six printed letter collections generated at times of political change. Among the authors whose letters are examined are Angel Day, Michael Drayton, Jacques du Bosque and Margaret Cavendish. Epistolary Community identifies broad patterns that were taking shape, and constantly morphing, in English printed letters from 1580 to 1664, and then considers how the six examples of printed letters selected for discussion manipulate this generic tradition to articulate ideas of community under specific historical and political circumstances. This study makes a substantial contribution to the rapidly growing field of early modern letters, and demonstrates how the field impacts our understanding of political discourses in circulation between 1580 and 1664, early modern women’s writing, print culture and rhetoric.

Book excerpt: Abstract: My work creates a methodology for reading American letters, building from scholarly predecessors such as Susan Fitzmaurice and James Daybell by emphasizing performance in epistolarity. My dissertation argues that the American female letter-writer engaged in a deft, practiced performance each time she picked up a pen. I suggest that the so-called "private," familiar letter should no longer be read as a transparent document or treated as a subset of autobiography; instead, we should see it as the writing mode women manipulated to become public, published authors, an argument that challenges two germinal studies of the public/private spheres in the eighteenth century: Habermas's theory that the eighteenth-century public sphere(s) excluded women and Michael Warner's thesis that the printing press was the sole exclusive catalyst for the republic's formation. Using the archival correspondence of New Englanders, Scottish-Americans, Southern British-Americans, an Englishwoman and others, I show how interconnected transnational and transatlantic female letter-writers were, passing each other poems, essays, and history texts so that their friends could read and share them with legislators, printers, statesmen, newspapers, and other women, forming a tightly interwoven network I call "the epistolary salon." Since many of these women wrote using pseudonyms, I suggest that the letter-writing space allowed them to dress in drag, cross-dressing on paper to discuss the topics (like politics) that would normally "unsex" them. The first section of the dissertation examines letters written during the late eighteenth century, addressing how women made public their opinions about politics, gender roles, and educational reform via letter-writing. The second section of the project concerns how early nineteenth-century female travel-writers engaged in discussions about nationalism and aesthetics while touring Scotland, France, Italy, and Germany. My project closes with a discussion of the historical migration of letters into canonical texts, particularly sentimental novels, suggesting that they were as much about flawed exercises in epistolarity as they were about the preservation of female virtue. Through The Coquette, Charlotte Temple, and Female Quixotism, I trace the failed epistolary performances of the novel's main characters, relying on eighteenth-century letter-writing manuals to foreground my argument.

Book excerpt: Germaine de Staël and German Women: Gender and Literary Authority (1800-1850) investigates Staël's significance as an icon of female artistic genius and political engagement for two generations of German women, including Caroline A. Fischer, Caroline Pichler, Johanna Schopenhauer, Bettina von Arnim, Ida Hahn-Hahn, and Luise Mühlbach. These authors drew a significant impetus from Staël's exemplary life and writings, especially her influential novels of political and artistic heroines, Delphine (1802) and Corinne, or Italy (1807), referring to them in order to authorize their own discourses on art and politics, and to buttress their identity as writers in a period when female authorship generated intense controversy. Taking references to Staël and her texts as a starting point opens fresh perspectives on German women's novels, while at the same time revealing their authors' participation in the broader European women's literary tradition. Whereas several novels from the first decade of the century echo Delphine by uniting domestic fiction with political themes, Staël's epoch-making novel of female poetic genius, Corinne, left a more lasting literary legacy in a tradition of German female artist novels. Corinne exemplified the creative woman's dilemma between fame and love, and subsequent German novelists explore this conflict, while several also emulate Staël's myth-making in Corinne as a strategy for attributing transcendent genius to their heroines. Reading for subtexts of female self-expression and development brings to light counter-narratives of female creative transcendence, often evoked through allusions to mythological figures. Martin suggests a revision of German literary history by uncovering a neglected tradition of artist novels positioned between the German Künstlerroman and Staël's newly inaugurated international dialogue on women's role in public culture.
