I., p. 236, Mr. T utt has a note on this question more especially with reference to the British Vanessa pairing in spring or autumn. In our New Zealand species (vanessa gonerilla) the pairing, I think, invariably takes place in Spring, as I have frequently observed them in September and October in copula on and about the native nettles, such being the foodplant of their larva. But I have not seen, or known, this species to pair in the autumn - W. W. Smith, Ashburton, N. Z. Imperfect development OF wings OF bombyx m0r1. - With regard to Mr. Mackonochie's article on Wing Development after Copulation, might I call his special attention to the fact that in the case quoted, the Specimen of Platypteryxfalcula was a female. Had it been a male, I very much doubt whether the development would have taken place, the latter being much more reduced than the former, never indeed long surviving the fulfilment of the purpose for which it was created. Several years ago I reared a number of larva of Bombyx mom, and many of the pupa hatching Simultaneously, several of the insects paired before developing their wings, after which, as far as I can remember, only a few females ever developed them at all fully - D. H. S. Steuart, 66, Albert Hall Mansions, W. February 27t/z, 1891. [i do not think sex in any way influences the development, which proceeds during copulation in both sexes. - ed.] retarded development OF wings.-i never saw an insect develop wings at the same rate of speed which Mrs. Bazett noticed in her Cbesias spartiata but no doubt every one will have remarked the quickness with which the wings on one side often develop, compared with the other side. Insects often wander about for a long time before the wings commence to expand; for instance, last year, I had an Acronycta (viminia) myricce which emerged two days before the wings commenced to develop, and after so long they developed perfectly. We do not think this is best done by publishing articles on work done, or descriptions of species from distant parts of the world these must be studied by the specialist who will buy the books he needs. But among the large amount of material which passes through our hands (and for the purpose of en larging our knowledge of what is being done in different parts of the world, and thus giving ourselves a broader view of the subject, we exchange with all foreign magazines that will exchange with us), there are often articles or books which contain information with which the British collector should be acquainted. These we discuss as occasion demands from our own British standpoint, and we feel satisfied that in so doing, we interest all our readers. Glowing accounts of how to catch Purple Emperors and Jersey Tigers may interest us occasionally, but we cannot continually get up an excitement on such subjects. One other matter we would mention, and in this we ask for the aid of all right-thinking entomologists. Britishers have been described as peculiar in their tastes and insular in their habits, with regard to matters entomological, and not without good reason. We have no sympathy with the man who prefers to remain ignorant because he is afraid to have foreign insects in his possession for comparison with British, lest he should be thought a cheat. Those men who study entomology as a science are well-known; they are above suspicion. At the same time, our insular prejudices have placed a high (if artificial) money value on rare and local British species. Why should they not have this value if they are thought worth it? That this is the case is proved by the fact that the value is fixed in British sale-rooms. But this artificial money value has led often to wholesale fraud, and we shall continue to protect our science by exposing such fraud wherever we find it existent, not so much from a sympathy with the victims, who sometimes appear to be pleased when victimised and extremely cross when a dirty piece of work is exposed, but on account of the fact that the introduction of foreign specimens as British, falsifies the data on which our scientific work is based, and disseminates error where we want to disseminate truth. Ignorance and error are the two greatest enemies of Science. Science is the well of absolute truth - all her devotees must seek to drink from'it. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Entomologist's Record and Journal of Variation, Vol. 42: January, 1930 The imagines, derived from eggs laid by the first generation in May appear in England in July and August, and differ from those of the first generation in having the apical blotches very dark, their extreme tips only being slightly irrorated with white, and indented internally along the nervures. The hindwings beneath are pale yellow and only slightly dusted with black scales. It is difficult at present to state the range of variation in this generation in England, for it is poorly represented in the collections we have seen. This is due partly to neglect of this common and apparently. Uninteresting species during the height of the season, and partly to the fact that the larvae are not found in abundance in gardens, as they are late ln the season. The autumn larvae on the other hand are often very abundant in gardens and can be collected easily in large numbers. Consequently the first generation and its aberrations are better represented.
