Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Enlarging Conception of God These essays, with the exceptions of Chapters III and IV, were not originally designed to form chapters of a book. Chapter I is an address given before the New York State Conference of Religion. Chapters II and V were published in the Harvard Theological Review, by the courtesy of whose editors they are used here. The unity of theme and treatment, we believe, does not suffer from this undesigned assembling; and there is a gain in concreteness by reason of the fact that each chapter was intended to stand in its own right. Certain repetitions were almost inevitable, but all of the discussions have been revised to make the argument as concise as seemed consistent with its pedagogical purpose. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Human-Shaped God approaches the humanlike accounts of God in the Old Testament as the starting places for theology and uses them to build a picture of the divine. This understanding of God is then brought into conversation with traditional conceptions that depict God as a being who knows everything that happens, is at every place at the same time, is constant and unchanging, and does not ultimately have material form. But instead of pitting the Old Testament's humanlike view of God against traditional theology and assuming that only one of these understandings is correct, A Human-Shaped God posits that theologians should embrace both of these constructions simultaneously. This is a new way of theological inquiry that embraces both the humanlike characteristics of God and the transcendence of God in traditional theology. By seeing and understanding the humanlike depictions of God in the Old Testament and by using the rich language of traditional theology together in tandem, the reader acquires a much deeper and meaningful understanding of God.

Book excerpt: This book has been written to share many of the now available insights into what our God is really like. The two sources for these insights are clearly identified by Paul in Romans 1:19-20. What God is really like has been revealed to us through the biblical record and by the things he has made. This volume honors both sources of insight. Many insights are drawn from Genesis, Exodus, Daniel, Hebrews, John' Revelations and The Four Gospels; each of these gospels provides us a different perspective on who Jesus really was. John's Revelation provides us the climax of what is now becoming visible to us. The Geological Survey of Israel has compiled a two-volume set entitled Research in Sinai (1967-1980). This excellent work provides us the physical basis for understanding what happened during all the experiences in the Holy Land. This published work was written at the Graduate School level and has been provided in easy to visualize language for today's readers. My background in military matters has provided me with the special insights into land warfare in Old Testament times up to the present. Although John never saw tanks, helicopters, personnel carriers, etc., he described them as they appeared to him in his visions. The literary framework of John's Revelation is that of Apocalyptic Literature. This style is clearly revealed in Daniel's visions. Not understanding this has led to the many conflicting interpretations of John's Revelations. The use of all the currently available sources will provide us with a much more complete view of who Jesus was, is and will forever be. He is the foundation upon which the abundant life of John 10:10 can be built.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an urbane and persuasive tract for our time, the distinguished Catholic theologian combines a comprehensive metaphysics with a sensitivity to contemporary existentialist thought. Father Murray traces the “problem of God” from its origins in the Old Testament, through its development in the Christian Fathers and the definitive statement by Aquinas, to its denial by modern materialism. Students and nonspecialist intellectuals may both benefit by the book, which illuminates the problem of development of doctrine that is now, even more than in the days of Newman, a fundamental issue between Roman Catholic and Protestant, theologians and nonspecialst intellectuals alike will find the subject of vital interest. As a challenge to the ecumenical dialogue, the question is raised whether, in the course of its development through different phases, the problem of God has come back to its original position. Father Murray is Ordinary professor of theology at Woodstock College, Woodstock, Maryland. St. Thomas More Lectures, 1. "A gem of a book—lucid, illuminating, brilliantly written. A fine contribution to the current Catholic theological renaissance."—Paul Weiss.

Book excerpt: In Shadows, Darkness, and Dawn, daily readings for the season of Lent engage us with the Gospel of John's narratives about Jesus: the temptation in the wilderness, Nicodemus's nighttime visit, the encounter with the woman at the well, Jesus' healing of the man born blind, the raising of Lazrus, and the events of Holy Week. We follow Jesus into the thickening shadows of conflict and rejection, suffering and death. With fresh insights, Tom Steagald takes us to the heart of these stories that reveal not only the shadows surrounding Jesus but those in our world and in our lives. And we hear the good news: in Jesus God has gone ahead of us-has taken up residence in these shadows-because God loves us. Book jacket.

This book was released on 2018-10-30 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author, Rev. Augustine Ampratwum-Duah, digs deep into the treasures of God's word to unearth spiritual insights into the concept of divine enlargement. He urges God's people to be on a journey to discover their unlimited capacity for enlargement. God's divine agenda for His people is phenomenal. Rev. Augustine invites us to enter into the realm of divine enlargement for His purposes and advancement as well as to harness the fullness of our potential. The fundamental truth of this book, Unveiling the Principles of Divine Enlargement, is the fact that the terms "unproductive" and "unfruitful" have become foreign to us. In fact, divine enlargement constitutes the staple element of our Christian life. The principles and applications in this masterpiece by Rev. Augustine no doubt cut across every sphere of life and vocation, propelling people to achieve the life destined for them by God. Rev. Augustine Ampratwum-Duah is the Senior Pastor of Covenant Bible Church International in Toronto. A graduate of York University, Toronto, Rev. Augustine has a background in mathematics and computer science. He recalls vividly a vision he had years ago where the Spirit of the Lord opened to him John 21:15-17. This event charted a new course for his life, and he has never looked back. This has been his driving force and passion for his pastoral ministry and missionary work. As a pastor, teacher, and author, Rev. Augustine writes from his wealth of life experiences to edify, strengthen, build, and encourage the body of Christ. He is married to Rev. Lucy, a co-partner in the ministry. He is a family man with two sons, Michael and Elijah, and he has three grandchildren.
