For two and a half years, while Europe was in the throes of the struggle, the United States stood on the side lines a neutral spectator. Today we are in the contest with all the strength and the vast resources of our great nation. Never was battle joined in holier cause. The Germans are fighting for territorial expansion, commercial extension, military supremacy, world dominion - material things. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The League of Nations The purpose of this book is to give a practical exposition of the Covenant of the League of Nations, with so much introduction as appears proper for enabling the reader to understand the conditions under which the League was formed and had to commence its work. If here and there I have been tempted to wander from the strait way, the digressions are not long enough to call for any special apology. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from League of Nations: An Alliance? Or a Nation of Nations? The Pioneer plan for a league of nations to be organized at the end of the world war, so as to make another such war impossible or improbable, was fully prepared on August 10, 1914, ten days after the great world war began. That plan is described herein in detail and contrasted with other plans. It was mailed to President Wilson August 18, 1914. It was referred by the White House to the Department of State, according to the letter of the Secretary of State to the author, dated September 17, 1914. In October, 1914, it was made public. The volume Nation of Nations, elaborating the plan with a tentative draft of a Supreme Constitution for the suggested international government and police power, was published just after June 17, 1915, when the League to Enforce Peace was organized at Philadelphia to promote a league of nations of an entirely different character, a world treaty alliance, as herein shown. Both plans are described and contrasted in that book, and in this volume. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The League of Nations, the Principle and the Practice Humanity has just passed through the most terrible ordeal in its history, an ordeal that has caused many men to despair of the possibility of a peaceful organization of the world that Will be durable. There is general agree ment that a treaty of peace will be but a mere truce if it settles only the more immediate problems of the war, leaves untouched its underlying causes, and provides no remedies for the defects of the international organization which broke down in 1914. The first step, therefore, in the study of the problem of international reconstruction is a consideration of the way in which the World was organized politically at the outbreak Of the Great War. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Covenanter: An American Exposition of the Covenant of the League of Nations Since few people preserve newspaper let ters after reading them, it has been thought wise to republish the series as a whole, and hence this little book. In the newspapers the names of the four writers were stated, but not the authors of the several letters. It may be of interest to give these in the table of contents of this edition. In order that the reader may be enabled to judge readily for himself how far the meaning of the provisions has been correctly understood, and the conclusions rightly drawn, the full text of the Covenant is printed herewith. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The League of Nations and Its Problems: Three Lectures P.s. - vvhile this Preface and volume were going through the Press, Austria - Hungary and Germany surrendered, and unprecedented revolutions broke out' which swept the Hapsburg, the Hohenzollern, and all the other German dynasties away. No one can foresee what will be the ultimate fate and condition of those two once mighty empires. It is obvious that, had the first and second lectures been delivered after these stirring events took place, some of the views to be found therein expressed would have been modified or differently expressed. I may ask the reader kindly to keep this in mind while reading the following pages. However, the general bearing of the argu ments, and the proposals for the organisation of the League of Nations and the establishment of an International Court of Justice and International Councils of Conciliation, are in no way influenced by these later events. Book excerpt: Excerpt from League of Nations: A Chapter in the History, of the Movement Suffered disappointments, the movement from that day to this has constantly grown, drawing within its ranks more and more thoughtful men in private sta tion and an ever greater number of men in positions of power, until today it really looks as if we were on the eve of realizing at least the beginnings of a true world organization. Are the men who have the doing of this thing in the hollow of the hand to suffer the world to be again disappointed? God forbid.
