They were employed in the open as it allowed them to most efficiently use their keen sense of sight. The Greyhound was originally tasked with hunting and coursing deer and hare. However in the 1920s the breed was introduced to the United Kingdom, Ireland and Australia where there was a significant racing culture. Greyhound racing has been a popular past time for many people over the years but in 2016 it was announced that most countries would stop racing Greyhound due to the fact that it is considered animal cruelty. All modern pure-bred Greyhounds are derived from the Greyhound stock recorded and registered in the 18th century. The temperament of dogs is normally affected by the following factors: individual personality, heredity, training and socialization. It is therefore important to make sure that you meet the puppy's mother before purchasing a Greyhound. It is also important to make sure to thoroughly socialize your Greyhound with strangers, children and other animals during its puppyhood. Generally speaking, Greyhounds tend to be gentle, loyal, loving and quiet pets. They have a tendency to be aloof with strangers but revel in the company other their owners and other dogs. The breed was developed in Louisiana by mixing the English Foxhound, the Cur dog, the American Foxhound, the Black and Tan Coonhound and the 'Bleu de Gascogne' hound which originates from southwest France. The Bluetick Coonhound was originally registered as a variant of the English Foxhound and was only recognized as an individual breed in late 1940s. The Bluetick Coonhound gets its 'blue' coloring from black ticking on a white background, which gives the illusion of a navy blue coloration. The breed has a moderate length and glossy coat that will have the unique 'blue' in sporadic patches across its coat. The Bluetick Coonhound was bred to be able to efficiently hunt raccoons and other small prey. Due to their hunting history, the breed is highly hardy, athletic and energetic. The breed is known to be challenging to socialize with other small household animals, such as cats, as the Bluetick Coonhound has a tendency to 'hunt' them.
