Jokes and stories that throw light upon Texas and her people have been freely inserted. But nothing of a humorous avor has been put in for its own sake only, because, as far as may be accomplished within the narrow compass of a single volume, an earnest effort has here been made to describe Texas. As a consequence, the following pages abound in statements of fact. This book is less than a scientific and detailed treatise; on the other hand, let us hope, it is more than a collection of random remarks made by superficial and facetious observers. I make an appeal at once personal and ofi'icial: it is for more legends, new or variant, to add to the ripening second volume that I trust may come forth at no very remote date. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Texan: A Tale of Texas Let's go up South Gabriel, and if we don't start a cat before we get to Bear Hollow we're almost sure to start that big old cat which runs over towards Nelson's pasture, and goes in one of the caves there. It has beat us to those caves two or three times now, and I'm itching to catch it and if Old Lead and Old Hunter strike its trail hot to-night they'll pick it up sure. I guess Roy and Will will want. To go with us, so you phone Will and I'll phone Roy, and we will start from my house at sundown. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Texas Past and Present The constitution and laws of the State were framed at a time when the rapid and sudden industrial development of the last decades of the nineteenth century could not have been anticipated; and they were inadequate for the regulation and control of public franchises. Certain features of the civil laws of Spain had remained a part of the Texan code. These exerted an in uence over legislative and judicial decisions; and, although especially important in their bearing upon the land systems and titles, they made no provision for the modern system of trusts and corporations. Hence, there was much need of legislation, both to perfect the body of laws necessary to the proper government and protection of the rights of a continually growing population with wide diversification of interests, and to meet the change of condition from a pastoral to an industrial civilization. This legislation, and the discussion incident thereto, created a period of violent political antagonism, and resulted in a long warfare, carried out upon the political rostrum, in the legislative halls, and in the State and Federal courts. Many laws were enacted, especially those regulating railroads, those against alien ownership of lands, and those for the regulation of trusts. Suits were instituted in the courts to recover property illegally held by corporations, and in some in stances millions of dollars reverted to the State Treasury. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Texas I was born on the fertile banks of the river Tay, in Scotland, North Britain; that classic land of science and renown, where a Wallace fought, a Knox preached, and a Scott wrote, a country only equal ed in its beauty by its salubrity; adorned by every improvement in modern husbandry, through that persevering spirit which animates an industrious and comparatively, with the rest of Europe, a free and consequently happy people. Lying on the confines of an East ern world, where, by turns, despotism and anarchy reign the sym pathetic feelings of sorrow will sometimes predominate in their breasts: still as often are their hearts rejoiced within them, to think that they have, by the interposition of Providence, a counterpoise in the west ern hemisphere; accelerated by that free and uninterrupted intercourse which they have with the highly gifted and enlightened inhabitants thereof, through the influence of that all-powerful and glorious engine in the hands of every republican government a free and fearless press which not only visits the palaces of the great, but enters with its all-inspiring beams into the meanest hovel of the peasant arous ing him to make the inquiry, Why this mighty difference? I say it! And made it my study how I should become a participator of such a blessed asylum, as God had provided for the poor and oppressed of every other country.
