Book excerpt: The Enchanted Playground is a story about a writer from England called Timothy Tuttle who likes to be called Tut by his friends. He comes to live in the United States with his 3-year-old daughter Emily and their Old English Sheepdog named Sadie. Tut buys a cabin on 3 acres on top of the Blue Ridge mountains near Upperville Virginia. Tut Emily and Sadie take daily walks around their new property and after a couple of months of exploring they discover an enchanted playground that sits behind a tall brick wall near their house. Only people with highly vivid imaginations are able to see the enchanted playground and they soon meet the fairies and tree trolls that live in the castle that is adjacent to the playground. The Trolls and the fairies become very protective towards Emily and make sure that wherever she and her father Tut go, they are always safe. The only problem with having magic tree trolls for friends is that you are the only human that can see them. The enchanted playground follows the life and adventures of Tut, Emily and Sadie as they explore their wonderful new life living in a cabin high up in the Blue Ridge mountains nestled on 3 acres in a lovely grove of fir trees.

Book excerpt: Rediscover the magic of the Enchanted Forest in this history of Maryland's Storybook Park, the first children's theme park on the East Coast. The history of the Enchanted Forest is one of magical beginnings. When it first opened in 1955, Ellicott City's storybook land became the first children's theme park on the East Coast. Young visitors could climb aboard rides like the Little Toot tugboat, Mother Goose and Ali Baba or encounter animals like peacocks and burros. Upon its closing in 1989, Marylanders who cherished memories of the Enchanted Forest were deeply disappointed. However, many of the park's beloved figures were moved to nearby Clark's Elioak Farm, where they were restored and displayed to the delight of new generations. Even today, the farm is a popular destination that evokes the whimsical spirit of the iconic park. Local author Janet Kusterer and Martha Anne Clark of Elioak Farm trace the park's history through vintage images and interviews with the Harrison family, former employees and visitors. Join Kusterer and Clark to rediscover the magic of the Enchanted Forest.

This volume showcases the work of programs from early childhood through adulthood, in a variety of educational and therapeutic settings, and from a range of theoretical and practical perspectives. The chapters cover an array of practices that can be seen across the play to performance continuum. Taken together, the myriad ways that play is performance and performance is play becomes clear, sometimes blurring the need for distinction. The volume provides play advocates, researchers and practitioners a wealth of practical and theoretical ideas for expanding the use of performance as a tool for creatingplayful environments where children and adults can create and develop.

Book excerpt: Founded in the 1830s by Joseph and Betty Kettlestrings, an intrepid young couple from Yorkshire, England, the small settlement of Oak Park grew slowly until the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. Before the ashes had cooled, Oak Park's population boomed as displaced families relocated into the community on the west edge of Chicago. By the turn of the 20th century, this thriving village became a magnet attracting ever-larger numbers of prosperous, progressive people to settle in what many referred to as "the finest of the streetcar suburbs." In the 1960s and 1970s, Oak Park became widely recognized for encouraging racial and ethnic diversity. Though best known for such residents as architect Frank Lloyd Wright and novelist Ernest Hemingway, Oak Park also lays claim to scores of others who have shone brightly in the national spotlight, as well as current folks who are passionate, daring, and dynamic. More than 100 noteworthy Oak Parkers-- past and present--are featured in this volume, from writers and restaurateurs to mobsters and movie stars.
