Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: James P Blaylock's 1982 début novel The Elfin Ship has become a classic of whimsical fantasy. With echoes of Kenneth Graham and Mark Twain, it's a gentle, eccentric and hilarious novel that will delight readers of all ages. Trading with the elves used to be so simple. Every year Master Cheeser Jonathan Bing would send his very best cheeses downriver to traders who would eventually return with Elfin wonders for the people of Twombly Town. But no more... First, the trading post at Willowood Station was mysteriously destroyed. Then a magical elfin airship began making forays overhead: Jonathan knew something was definitely amiss. So he set off downriver to deliver the cheeses himself, accompanied by the amazing Professor Wurzle, the irrepressible Dooly, and his faithful dog Ahab. It would have been such a pleasant trip, if not for the weeping skeleton, mad goblins, magic coins, an evil dwarf, a cloak of invisibility - and a watch that stopped time. Of course, the return trip was not so simple.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, EV:5 is the one about revenge, a very famous necklace and an even more famous ship! In part one, 'The Revenge', the thoroughly-unpleasant Jason Grubb gets out of prison and swears revenge on the little aliens and the two human youngsters who put him there - but his equally-obnoxious mate Eddie 'Slug' Sugden has a much more cunning plan to put into action. Part two, 'The Heist', sees an impossible crime being committed by very unlikely criminals. And in part three, 'The Hustle', Tom and Becca feel like Hollywood superstars as they act out the con they hope will rid them of Jason Grubb forever! Explore the world of the Elfin Voyagers... If you're not already a fan, I'll let Tom bring you up to speed... I'm Tom Foster; almost thirteen years old, one quarter of a slightly unusual family living in London, and already a kind of adoptive father to seven tiny alien space travellers who now live in secret in a shed at the bottom of our garden. Guess when you say it like that, it sounds a bit nuts. Perhaps if you've not met us before, I'd better explain! I'll start with my family...we're a bit inside-out I suppose. Dad's a mild-mannered banker who does most of the cooking, says 'yes dear' a lot and takes everything in his stride. My sister Sammi; sixteen years old and everything you would expect from a pain-in-the-neck older sister, suddenly became Sammi Version Two and started being nice to me after I microwaved her and saved her life. (Yes I know...but see book three!) Mum fancies herself as Bob-the-builder; spends most weekends trashing our house and then putting it back together a little bit better than it was. It was mum who started all this - at least, her twelve-pound sledgehammer that came out one fateful Sunday last year to demolish the wall under the stairs. And I found the spaceship, and the next morning became the first human being to know alien life existed! Guess I'd better tell you a little about the guys. They're tiny...I mean, really, really tiny! Average height? About four inches. Except Alto, who almost reaches five. Pretty much like us, except their skin has a green tint to it and their earlobes drop to a point. Angel's the youngest at fourteen Earth-years, Milo the eldest at eighteen. They came from an equally tiny planet called Saronelf. It doesn't exist anymore, destroyed by its own people who fortunately had enough time to build huge spaceships and escape before the planet blew itself to bits. Angel was just four years old when suddenly didn't even have a planet she could call home.

So it’s no surprise that when Professor Wurzle suggests a trip downriver, Jonathan jumps at the chance. A visit to the Evil Dwarf Selznak’s abandoned castle leads to a treasure hunt, but also to the discovery that Jonathan’s old friend the Squire has vanished, and that Selznak may be involved. Jonathan--accompanied by his wonderpooch Ahab, the Professor, and Miles the Magician--will have to set off to darkest Balumnia, to the city of Landsend, to find the treasure, and the Squire. And to make matters worse, Selznak will be there, too... The delightful sequel to The Elfin Ship by World Fantasy and Philip K. Dick award winner James P. Blaylock. The Disappearing Dwarf was first published in 1983. "A magical world, magically presented... having journeyed there, you will not wish to leave, nor ever to forget." -- Philip K. Dick

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second thriller in the supernatural trilogy by the World Fantasy Award–winning author— An “intriguing and absorbing work from a major talent” (Kirkus Reviews). Howard Barton came to Mendocino in search of a folded scrap of paper. Not just any old scrap of paper, but one bearing what might be a sketch by the legendary Japanese artist, Hoku-sai. But Howard, unfortunately, is not the only one who wants the sketch . . . There’s old Heloise Lamey, whose lush and noxious garden is watered with blood, ink, and stranger substances. And the enigmatic Mr. Jimmers, the owner of a workshop that holds a bizarre invention designed to raise the dead. Even Howard’s Uncle Roy, a builder of haunted houses and founder of the Museum of Modern Mysteries, has an interest in the sketch. In Northern California, nothing is what it appears, but everything is connected— and Howard is led to a mysterious private war between secret, underground societies. Now he just needs to figure out whose side he’s on in the quest for the Paper Grail. “Blaylock redeems the familiarity of his plot with a gift for drawing characters who are eccentric in delightful and original ways, whichever side of the war they are on.” —Publishers Weekly “Blaylock ventures into the realm of magical realism as eccentric matrons and failed entrepreneurs assume mythic proportions in this witty and intelligent metaphysical novel. This crossover novel belongs equally well in literary and fantasy collections.” —Library Journal

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tom Foster is twelve years old, four foot eleven, and lives in Acacia Avenue, London, England. Little Angel is fourteen, four inches tall, and lives in the same house. Tom shares the house with his sixteen-year-old sister Sammi, who thinks he's a geek; a mum who fancies herself as a female Bob the Builder, and a dad who shakes his head a lot but takes it all in his stride. Angel shares her space with her five friends, trapped under the stairs by a very unfortunate quirk of fate. (Which was when they discovered humans were just a bit bigger than they were!) Tom is into space, the universe and all that. Angel and her friends came from space. Tom hasn't a clue Angel even exists. Angel knows everything about Tom. But today is Sunday, mum's 'DIY day'...and she's got a twelve-pound sledgehammer. So life for Tom and Angel is about to change... The 'Elfin Voyagers' series of books was originally written for middle-grade readers...but is now loved by all ages! This is the first in a series of adventures for Tom, his friend Becca and the Voyagers. Why not check out the others in the series? And if you're not already a fan, perhaps you should meet the EV's first... Milo - the eldest one (just). Feels responsible for the others, likes to think he's the one who should be in charge. Effie - the bossy one. She actually runs the ship, and keeps everyone in line. Doesn't smile much and doesn't show it, but cares deeply about her friends. Alto - the tall one. He never says very much, but handles a spaceship better than most grown-ups. Frazzle - the practical one. He can fix almost anything...which, given the situation they are in, is probably a good job. Biff - the clever one. He's the brains of the crew, the problem-solver. Which is what he seems to spend most of his time doing! And finally, there's... Angel - the pretty one. And the youngest one (just). The slightly wild, slightly unpredictable one. The one who really got them into this mess in the first place...

Book excerpt: When a boat-sized shoe and giant spectacles wash up on the shore, three of the town's orphans - Jack, Skeezix, and Helen - know there's something fishy going on, and the old ghost in the orphanage attic is inclined to agree. An evil carnival comes to town, run by a sinister gentleman who can turn himself into a crow. A mouse-sized man hiding in the woodwork leaves Jack an elixir that might, just might, allow him to cross during Solstice to another world, a mysterious land of dreams that holds the key to Jack's past and all their adventures. Land Of Dreams is a phantasmagorical adventure reminiscent of Charles Finney's The Circus of Dr. Lao and Ray Bradbury's Something Wicked This Way Comes. REVIEWS: "... a singular American fabulist." -- William Gibson "Land Of Dreams is Blaylock's best yet - powerful, magical, suspenseful and funny, this novel sails us through the supernatural backwaters of the northern California coast, and none of its readers will ever quite be able to leave its landscape of rotting waterfront towns, and strange songs echoing in from the sea, and vast, unknown cities visible on dubious horizons. Blaylock is the best of contemporary writers, and Land Of Dreams is destined to be one of the field's classics." -- Tim Powers "Striking, beautifully turned surreal fantasy... Weird, complex, wise, original, delightful: pounce!" -- Kirkus Reviews

Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • “One of George’s best . . . insightful, tense, and compassionate.”—Entertainment Weekly Balford-le-Nez is a dying seaside town on the coast of Essex. But when a member of the town’s small but growing Asian community is found murdered near its beach, the sleepy town ignites. Intrigued by the involvement of her London neighbor—Taymullah Azhar—in what appears to be a growing racial conflagration, Detective Sergeant Barbara Havers arranges to have herself assigned to the investigation. Setting out on her own, this is one case Havers will have to solve without her longtime partner, Detective Inspector Thomas Lynley— and it’s one of the toughest she’s ever encountered. For Havers must probe not only the mind of a murderer and her emotional response to a case unsettlingly close to her own heart, but also the terrible price people pay for deceiving others . . . and themselves. Praise for Deception on His Mind “So much fun to read, it’s criminal.”—Newsday “It’s tough to resist the pull of George’s storytelling once hooked.”—USA Today “Falls smartly into place in [George’s] literate, impassioned series, one of today’s best.”—Chicago Tribune “Fascinating . . . there are wrenching stories here, and George conveys them with exceptional grace.”—People

Book excerpt: An “oddball fairy tale” (The New York Times)—shortlisted for one of France’s highest literary prizes—a dark, funny, and wholly charming novel about a young boy and his eccentric family, who grapple with the realities of mental illness in unique and whimsical ways. A young boy lives with his madcap parents, Louise and George, and an exotic bird in a Parisian apartment, where the unopened mail rises in a tower by the door and his parents dance each night to Nina Simone’s mellifluous classic “Mister Bojangles.” As his mother, mesmerizing and unpredictable, descends deeper into her own mind, it is up to the boy and his father to keep her safe—and, when that fails, happy. Fleeing Paris for a country home in Spain, they come to understand that some of the most radiant people bear the heaviest burdens. Told from the perspective of a young boy who idolizes his parents—and from George’s journals, detailing his epic love story with his wife—Waiting for Bojangles is a “lighthearted and yet sorrowful tale” (San Francisco Chronicle) that will stay with you long after the final page.
