Cunning plots, heroic adventures, harrowing conquests… there’s no end to the possibilities.

Eldarlands LARP is a fantasy based live-action role-playing game in which the players create and become their characters, driving the story through conflict and roleplay. Within these pages, you’ll find everything you need to create and advance a character, build safe weaponry and armor, and learn the rules of combat. If you’ve picked up this book, one can only assume you’re one of two types of people. First, you’re familiar with Live Action Role Playing and are wondering why this rulebook is any different than another you game may have played. Or, you’re the second type and have no idea what LARP is and are likely curious about it. To answer both, this player’s handbook is simply a guide to help new players get started. It contains everything one might need to know, from character creation and advancement, to combat rules, and even a little history for the world’s setting, though with this style of game that’s literally the least important aspect. Eldarlands LARP is no better or worse than any other live action game out there. It’s the people involved who make the experience enjoyable. For those who are already experienced with this style of game, Eldarlands LARP is roughly a 40% boffer combat / 60% role-playing game. Players immerse themselves into the game world by becoming their characters, choosing how they dress and act, they build alliances or create enemies with other players, they fight for their beliefs, all the while advancing the storyline. Combat is a three-limb or single body hit death system with point valued armor and damage. Characters can advance in level to gain new or stronger abilities in their class through attendance, participation, and on occasion, quest rewards. The world setting in which the game takes place is irrelevant, though one is provided. The game and story are driven by character conflict and the game’s story marshal who directs the operations of gameplay and ensures a plot is available for characters to interact with. Join the adventure by immersing yourself into this live-action-role-playing game.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exposing a subculture only beginning to enter the imagination of mainstream America, this is the story of live action role-playing (LARP) games. A hybrid of games—such as Dungeons & Dragons, historical reenactment, fandom, and good old-fashioned pretend—LARP games are thriving and this book explores its multifaceted culture and related phenomenon, including the Society for Creative Anachronism, a medieval reenactment group that boasts more than 32,000 members. The history of LARP is detailed and is shown to have arisen from the pageantry of Tudor England and is currently being used as a training tool for the U.S. military. Along the way, the author duels foes with foam-padded weapons, lets the great elder god Cthulhu destroy her parents' beach house, and endures an existential awakening in the high-art LARP scene of Scandinavia.

Role Playing Materials examines how larp, mixed and tabletop role-playing games work. Costumes, computers, pen and paper are not passive elements. Materials change and are changed during role-playing game sessions, because they work together with narrative and ludic elements. If we think about materials as social elements, how do they make role-playing games work? To answer this question, Role Playing Materials draws on ethnographic fieldwork among role-playing communities in Germany. The analysis draws upon the fields of game studies, and science, technology and society studies.

Book excerpt: An amazing journey through the thriving worlds of fantasy and gaming What could one man find if he embarked on a journey through fantasy world after fantasy world? In an enthralling blend of travelogue, pop culture analysis, and memoir, forty-year-old former D&D addict Ethan Gilsdorf crisscrosses America, the world, and other worlds—from Boston to New Zealand, and Planet Earth to the realm of Aggramar. “For anyone who has ever spent time within imaginary realms, the book will speak volumes. For those who have not, it will educate and enlighten.” —Wired.com “Gandalf’s got nothing on Ethan Gilsdorf, except for maybe the monster white beard. In his new book, Fantasy Freaks and Gaming Geeks, Gilsdorf . . . offers an epic quest for reality within a realm of magic.” —Boston Globe “Imagine this: Lord of the Rings meets Jack Kerouac’s On the Road.” —National Public Radio’s “Around and About” “What does it mean to be a geek? . . . Fantasy Freaks andGaming Geeks tackles that question with strength and dexterity. . . . part personal odyssey, part medieval mid-life crisis, and part wide-ranging survey of all things freaky and geeky . . . playful . . . funny and poignant. . . . It’s a fun ride and it poses a question that goes to the very heart of fantasy, namely: What does the urge to become someone else tell us about ourselves?” —Huffington Post

Book excerpt: Question: Do any of you know the truly scary part about being seventeen? Answer: Your brain doesn't actually know, understand or care what it can't do; and, while this sounds great in theory, in my particular case, my under-developed brain apparently didn't know I couldn't fly. So I jumped . . . And I plummeted . . . And I promise you, if I somehow manage to survive this act of immature-brain-encased-in-unbelievable-stupidity, I will gladly tell you exactly how I got here. Which, for the record, is chasing a dark-web killer through the middle of a live action role-playing game, better known as a LARP. On a LARP introduces readers to teen coder, Sid Rubin, a smartass—and super-smart—high school kid with a strong conscience and a knack for solving problems. This high concept, frenetic ride dives into the fascinating world of interactive role-playing when Sid recognizes the photo of a murder victim during an AP field trip to a police station. What starts out as an Aha! moment soon finds Sid and her unlikely posse of friends chasing a dark web killer through the middle of a live action role playing game. Sid and the gang work to unravel a deeply encrypted mystery while simultaneously enduring pop quizzes, endless Ted Talks, teenage heartbreak, suspicious parents, cosplay, and the irresistible lure of the NYC Public Library. Stefani Deoul is the author of the award-winning novel The Carousel. She has produced TV series such as The Dead Zone, Brave New Girl, and Haven, and was also the executive in charge of production for the series Dresden Files and Missing.

Book excerpt: This ethnography of a live-action role play (LARP) community examines the structure of play, how new participants are introduced and apprenticed into the culture, player expectations and motivations, and games as they are designed and as they are performed. The main focus is on LARP's affordance for learning across a variety of disciplines and interests. The book is intended for LARP participants, academics interested in play or in collaborative development, those interested in new uses of familiar learning environments, and game developers with an interest in creating games with highly interactive narratives and co-creative play experiences in which the role of designer and player is blurred.

While they once determined the outcome of conflicts between rival kingdoms, the industrial revolution has rendered the use of magic on the battlefield unnecessary. And so, they fade away into the background... Damian Spires is a slacker of sorts, content with sliding through life on the odd job of fortifying homes or ridding trees of pesky imps. But when he stumbles upon an unconscious elf in an alley on his walk home from weekly poker night, he faces a variety of questions: Who is this woman? Where did she come from? Is someone looking for her? Focusing on helping the strange woman to adapt to the terrifying new world she finds herself in, Damian decides to protect her from those who seek to do her harm. As they learn more about each other, they discover some truths about themselves as well. What they don't know is that there is another power at play, stalking in the shadows. Someone is responsible for the elven woman entering their world, and they are more ready to expend whatever resources are required to regain their bounty.

Sometimes a world that doesn't exist is the only escape from the one that does." When successful New York editor Jen Gibbs discovers a decaying slush-pile manuscript on her desk, she has no idea that the story of Sarra, a young mixed-race woman trapped in Appalachia at the turn of the twentieth century, will both take her on a journey and change her forever. Happy with her life in the city, and at the top of her career with a new job at Vida House Publishing, Jen has left her Appalachian past and twisted family ties far behind. But the search for the rest of the manuscript, and Jen's suspicions about the identity of its unnamed author, will draw her into a mystery that leads back to the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains . . . and quite possibly through the doors she thought she had closed forever.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Role-play as a Heritage Practice is the first book to examine physically performed role-enactments, such as live-action role-play (LARP), tabletop role-playing games (TRPG), and hobbyist historical reenactment (RH), from a combined game studies and heritage studies perspective. Demonstrating that non-digital role-plays, such as TRPG and LARP, share many features with RH, the book contends that all three may be considered as heritage practices. Studying these role-plays as three distinct genres of playful, participatory and performative forms of engagement with cultural heritage, Mochocki demonstrates how an exploration of the affordances of each genre can be valuable. Showing that a player’s engagement with history or heritage material is always multi-layered, the book clarifies that the layers may be conceptualised simultaneously as types of heritage authenticity and as types of in-game immersion. It is also made clear that RH, TRPG and LARP share commonalities with a multitude of other media, including video games, historical fiction and film. Existing within, and contributing to, the fiction and non-fiction mediasphere, these role-enactments are shaped by the same large-scale narratives and discourses that persons, families, communities, and nations use to build memory and identity. Role-play as a Heritage Practice will be of great interest to academics and students engaged in the study of heritage, memory, nostalgia, role-playing, historical games, performance, fans and transmedia narratology.
