Oh! my brethren of the tribunal! oh! Cleon! to the rescue! BDELYCLEON. Go and bawl in there under lock and key. And you there, pile plenty of stones against the door, thrust the bolt home into the staple, and to keep this beam in its place roll that great mortar against it. Quick's the word. SOSIAS. Oh! my god! whence did this brick fall on me? XANTHIAS. Perhaps a rat loosened it. SOSIAS. A rat? 'tis surely our gutter-judge, [40] who has crept beneath the tiles of the roof. XANTHIAS. This book was released on 2013-03-05 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aristophanes was a Greek comic poet, famous for writing plays, especially comedies such as The Birds for the two Athenian festivals: the Dionisia and the Lenea. Many of his plays were political, and he is known to have been prosecuted for Athenian law's equivalent of libel more than once. A famous comedy, The Frogs, was given the unprecedented honor of a second perfomance. He appears in Plato's Symposium, giving a humorous mythical account of the origin of Love. The Clouds pokes fun at famous figures, notably Socrates, and may have contributed to the common conception of the philosopher as a Sophist. Lysistrata was written during the Peloponnesian war between Athens and Sparta and presents a pacifist theme in a comical manner: the women of the two states deprive their husbands of sex until they stop fighting. This play was later illustrated at length by Pablo Picasso. The Wasps The Birds The Frogs The Thesmophoriazusae The Ecclesiazusae Plutus

Book Synopsis Essays on Ancient Greek Literature and Culture: Volume 2, Comedy, Herodotus, Hellenistic and Imperial Greek Poetry, the Novels by : Ewen Bowie
Download or read book Essays on Ancient Greek Literature and Culture: Volume 2, Comedy, Herodotus, Hellenistic and Imperial Greek Poetry, the Novels written by Ewen Bowie and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2023-06-30 with total page 1071 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book one of the world's leading Hellenists brings together his many contributions over four decades to our understanding of major genres of Greek literature, above all the Greek novel, but also Attic Comedy, fifth-century historiography, and Hellenistic and Imperial Greek poetry. Many are already essential reading, such as the chapter on the figure of Lycidas in Theocritus' Idyll 7, or two chapters on the ancient readership of Greek novels. Discussions of Imperial Greek poetry published three decades ago opened up a world almost entirely neglected by scholars. Several chapters address literary and linguistic issues in Longus' novel Daphnis and Chloe, complementing the author's commentary published in 2019; two contribute to a better understanding of the enigmatic Aethiopica of Heliodorus; and many explore important questions arising from examination of the form of the Greek novel as a whole. This is the second of a planned three-volume collection.

Book Synopsis Kierkegaard's Journals and Notebooks, Volume 2 by : Søren Kierkegaard
Download or read book Kierkegaard's Journals and Notebooks, Volume 2 written by Søren Kierkegaard and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2015-06-22 with total page 600 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Søren Kierkegaard (1813-55) published an extraordinary number of works during his lifetime, but he left behind nearly as much unpublished writing, most of which consists of what are called his "journals and notebooks." Volume 2 of this 11-volume edition of Kierkegaard's Journals and Notebooks includes materials from 1836 to 1846, a period that takes Kierkegaard from his student days to the peak of his activity as an author. In addition to containing hundreds of Kierkegaard's reflections on philosophy, theology, literature, and his own personal life, these journals are the seedbed of many ideas and passages that later surfaced in Either/Or, Repetition, Fear and Trembling, Philosophical Fragments, The Concept of Anxiety, Stages on Life's Way, Concluding Unscientific Postscript, and a number of Edifying Discourses.
Book Synopsis City of the Good by : Michael Mayerfield Bell
Download or read book City of the Good written by Michael Mayerfield Bell and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2020-04-28 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How we came to seek absolute good in religion and nature—and why that quest often leads us astray People have long looked to nature and the divine as paths to the good. In this panoramic meditation on the harmonious life, Michael Mayerfeld Bell traces how these two paths came to be seen as separate from human ways, and how many of today’s conflicts can be traced back thousands of years to this ancient divide. Taking readers on a spellbinding journey through history and across the globe, Bell begins with the pagan view, which sees nature and the divine as entangled with the human—and not necessarily good. But the emergence of urban societies gave rise to new moral concerns about the political character of human life. Wealth and inequality grew, and urban people sought to justify their passions. In the face of such concerns, nature and the divine came to be partitioned from the human, and therefore seen to be good—but they also became absolute and divisive. Bell charts the unfolding of this new moral imagination in the rise of Buddhism, Christianity, Daoism, Hinduism, Jainism, and many other traditions that emerged with bourgeois life. He follows developments in moral thought, from the religions of the ancient Sumerians, Greeks, and Hebrews to the science and environmentalism of today, along the way visiting with contemporary indigenous people in South Africa, Costa Rica, and the United States. City of the Good urges us to embrace the plurality of our traditions—from the pagan to the bourgeois—and to guard against absolutism and remain open to difference and its endless creativity.
